ANGIE I do live IN the sea! A small peninsula with sea on three sides, a few hundred metres away on all three sides! Very beautiful! The humidity, wind and altitude (or lack thereof) gets to me though.

Star, I know, right? Lightweight cotton L/S tops are the BEST in Summer! HIGH FIVE - and yes to pausing on other fabrics.

I've lived in JHB and been to Mexico City - the climates are very similar! Good one. And very different to Cape Town weather - which has my heart for all sorts of reasons despite too much sun!!! I am a seashore person, contrary to you! And now you live by the sea, I believe?

Bj1111 I had a feeling there are similarities to LA weather-wise. Except December is mid-summer in JHB.

SUZ Now it makes sense.

ANGIE light weight cotton long sleeves are very useful in summer, agreed. It's the other fabrics I need too stop buying.
Johannesburg weather is very different to Cape Town, not only the obvious of not being next to an ocean, but also is at a high altitude although not a mountain. Similar only to Mexico City I think. This ensures moderate warmth all year round. Plus the high altitude is very energising. I find sea level very exhausting. Also I am not used to wind. The only time there is a wind in JHB is just before a storm. It does get boring dressing almost the same all year round though. The ladies start wearing boots and jackets even though the temps are around 18 -22 degrees C :).

Thanks for answering Star, Suz!

Now you know, Star We have a lot of humidity when it's COLD because it rains a lot - (rainforest geography) - which is why it feels much colder here in the PNW than the temperature suggests. A WET cold is much colder than a dry cold.

Star and Peri, I LOVE wearing long sleeves in hot weather and hot and humid weather! Cotton and lightweight. I scrunch my sleeves, and feel protected from the sun. I cannot handle exposing my skin to the sun (hence my legs are covered too). I will only wear sleeveless on a hot night! No sun! Star, contrary to you I expect, I do not like South African weather or Mediterranean climate in general. Too sunny for too much of the year. I love a sunny Summer! But I love a distinctively four season climate with moody weather best of all (the sun is much more tempered).

Yes, I think the difference is that yours is an inland sea and ours is the biggest ocean on earth. :)

Actually, your climate sounds similar (if much warmer) to what I know from having lived most of my life on the shores of Lake Ontario -- not a sea, but one of the Great Lakes. There, too, we had very humid summers and cold winters.

Angie and I (and others who live in our general area) live in what is known as a warm summer Mediterranean climate - with warm, dry summers (as the name suggests) and cool rainy winters. We get a lot of cool ocean breezes all the time, and summers get almost no rainfall. Hence, low humidity.

ROBERTA well that is a positive attitude. Yes my Spring clothes should definitely last forever :).

DEE I feel most put together in transitional outfits.

JANET I don't think you should ever get rid of clothes that you still really like. I have the same situation. I'm shopping less though, being super selective. To enter my closet it has to be a notable upgrade from any similar item I already have

SISI we've had hail stones the size of ostrich eggs too! The hot and cold clashing. I would have thought that Italy being more South would get warmer earlier than here.

UNFRUMPED I do have an easily accessible active space for my preferred items of the season. The items have been chopped and changed more frequently this year. Dont let go of any of your jackets with special qualities if you have the space. Even if some of my jackets only get worn a couple of times a year I still want them, so I get it. But I pledge not to buy anymore Spring weight jackets!

Yesterday twice.

bj111, your comment resonates! I both love jackets and am having to conf yo grips with the fact that I don’t need so many. When working ( outside of the home!), I wore some kind of topper every day to and from work, though not during the work day itself. So various styles & weights got their moments.
Now I not only need mostly somewhat different styles, but way fewer in terms of how much wear each would get. Yet I feel still like I’m on the lookout for great jackets, across all levels of formality & occasion, from hoodie to blazer to linen topper or sporty rain jacket. Plus I find it near impossible to let any of mine go, since while not perfect in some ways, each was chosen for certain characteristics.

Same here! Had a lot of cool nights and then of course warmed during day so maybe had to fling off a jackets. But could wear more of my transition - weight pants, more “ interesting “ outfits. Had had to go pull out some extra LS tops from the off-season closet because I needed them to make some outfits I wanted to keep wearing while I could. Then 2 days ago boom, humid & warm. NOT hot summer yet of course, but still.
So, I relate to “ just had gotten in my groove”, as I wore some outfits on repeat, to different occasions, and enjoyed having figured them out plus felling able to get dressed quickly & no stress.

Because I do somewhat unfortunately have too many clothes to keep in my main closet year- round, I do store off-season items, some in spare closet — hanging items, not all precious but I hang nicer T’s —plus some in totes, for sweats, fleece, lounge. These are not too hard to get to, hanging items especially so hanging includes more transitional items for convenience, but I try to avoid moving them to the off-areas until I’m pretty sure I won’t wear until the next “ season”. Plus, I tried to develop a wardrobe concept in which there’s a clean swap between “ active space” and off- loaded storage, and serve as a “ container concept” limit . For example, I have a container for gardening clothes and a drawer for same, but they are either SS or FW and just flip.

So I have a concept of asking myself, “ do I think this is the last time I will wear this until …” , so I can do the flip.
I’m not always right of course!

Yes, it is like that a lot here. I knew that going into the season, and I am sure to keep plenty of summery clothes at hand starting in spring!

The weather is all we talk about here right now . It is ridiculously cold here today …..9C , and I can count the number of sunny warmish days we’ve had since end of March on one hand . I also have too many transitional weather pieces , but at least I’m getting to wear them . It’s actually pretty depressing this year - and I hope it’s not a sign of climate change .

Ugh. I remember this pattern from when I lived in Ontario. Apart from gym gear, I didn't own any closed shoes for years -- only boots/ booties, and sandals. Because that was all I needed apart from maybe two days a year!

I sympathise. It is really hard to get your head around the abrupt switch and can take a few weeks to adjust.
