The dress I bought (and just had altered) for my niece's wedding is REALLY tough to zip up in back by myself. The zipper is just a tiny bit sticky, plus somehow the style of the dress makes it difficult. If I were trying to zip it myself last year, when I had a shoulder injury, it never would have worked. This year I can do it by myself, but I almost worked up a sweat doing it! I think yoga has helped my ability to regain range of motion in my shoulders.

But I'm glad hubs will be with me in London to help me zip up my dress for the big occasion. In general, I can't count on his being here to help me with these tricky back closures (he's still working much of the time away from home), so I usually avoid anything I can't do up myself.

I have some tall boots that are so much easier to remove with his help too! Fortunately, he likes it when I ask.

I'm an independent dresser. I DO ask my in-house fashion stylist for an opinion if I am unsure though. The mechanics I do myself.

I still have such a mental block about this. For some reason when I was young, I really internalized the message that no one should see you get ready; you need to simply appear the way you wish to be seen as if by magic. While DH has certainly seen me at my best and at my worst, I would still never, ever ask for his help in getting dressed. I've become quite the contortionist over the years. Interestingly, the one thing that really gives me pause is latching a lobster clasp bracelet on my own! I'd ask him to help with that, but his fingers are too large for such delicate business!

@Gigi, what was the garment and what did you have to do?

If I had a husband, I would much rather ask for help than have to contort myself to fasten hooks and eyes on the back of garments! I wore one such item yesterday, in fact. I will say that I am pretty good at figuring out how to do it myself. Sometimes you have to be creative. But having another person around would be my first choice!

@Becky, about time the kids helped out!

@pil, I forgot about this for hubs.

I help my husband more often than he helps me. His shirt cuffs are stiff when they come back from being laundered. My fingers are just that much smaller than his and have just enough finger nail that I’m able to button the cuffs.

I often count on my daughters to help with back zippers/snaps/hooks as well as necklaces that I can't seem to fasten or unfasten alone. Also, I've bought a bra strap clip but never used it for the reason you mentioned.

Perhaps I’m a weenie or I just enjoy his company. Hubs usually helps me dress and undress. There are dresses that have a back snap or hook and eye that I just can not contort myself to do or undo. Zippers with the tiniest pulls.

I’ve started wearing a bra strap clip to keep the straps from flopping down my sloping shoulders. I can’t do/undo that sucker without help. Honestly, some of my spanx is a two -er- man job.

Is getting dressed harder for singletons? Or am I just “special?”
