Stays fit, I do not own any oven mitts as they are too bulky for hot dishes from the oven, but I see that I should get some. Then I could pack my gloves away for the summer. Thank you for this advice. Thank you , Janet.

I have mild Reynauds and spend hours outdoors while taking photographs so I need warmth and function of my fingers — not an easy thing. By far the solution that works best for me are convertible mittens that have tops that fold back so they function like fingerless gloves when I’m operating my camera (also good for smartphone use). My current most-worn pair are these:

https://www.trailheads.com/con.....XbEALw_wcB

I prefer the type that have little magnets to keep the tops back, rather than buttons or snaps or even straps to hold the tops out of the way, but they are hard to find.

I wear these even in sub-freezing temps but also tuck my hands in the pockets of my puffer to warm up in between sessions of shooting.

I have mild Raynauds, live in a cold and snowy locale, and have tried many types of gloves. Most years I have purchased at least two new to me styles/brands with the hope that they will be warm enough. I mostly agree with Lisa P. Unless I am in motion (skiing, running, hiking, snow shoes, etc.) they do not work well. I also agree that gloves designed for sports are warmest. The warmest gloves I have owned are Canada Goose Down filled. They are pricey but worth it if you do not lose gloves.

One trick with gloves is to make sure they fit well. Not snug or loose because too snug they cut off circulation and too loose they will not do enough to retain warmth. I have long fingers so men’s gloves often fit better than women's. Very thick wool gloves may do the trick. DH has some although they do not work well for me (they may be too large).

Shearling gloves from Ugg have not been warm enough for my hands. I have them and use them to coordinate with some of my coats only on days when it is above freezing. I do like leather gloves lined with cashmere or some sort of warm fleece. If they fit perfectly, they are often warm enough for all but the coldest days.

If you can get by, mittens are much warmer than gloves. I tend to wear mittens when temps or wind chills dip below freezing. Some mittens have a flap so they can act like fingerless gloves if needed. I like those for times I need to answer a phone or need more finger dexterity than mitts. However, my favorite are a pair of waterproof down ski mittens from EMS. (Eastern Mountain Sports)

Joy, for the freezer, I use my oven mitts.

Also, the warmer my body, the warmer my hands, so ensure you are wearing a warm enough coat, etc.

Peri, I discovered Ugg gloves a few years ago and they are super warm. A little bulky but still ok for driving.
Nordstrom Rack has a few styles now.

I have Raynaurds and need to keep lined gloves handy all year for getting things out of or cleaning the freezer. I really have problems in water. Does anyone have any suggestions for gloves to wear when swimming?

Chuckling along with Lisa P. I'm with her -- I would rarely need gloves at that temp! But it's all what we are used to. Who would have thought that this Ontario girl would complain about winter temps around 5 C once she got to the west? But it's the daaaaaaaaaamp!!!!

So -- one consideration -- do you need or want to wear them when driving? This is relevant to fabrication. Leather work much better for driving gloves, or at least a leather palm. If you go for leather, look for ones that have a cashmere or alpaca lining -- or, if you run really cold, shearling. Shearling with make for a slightly bulkier glove but they will still be nice looking. Mr. Suz (who has Raynaud's) wears shearling lined gloves.

I have a lovely pair of boiled wool gloves (similar to the ones in the link but all red) that work great for temps like the ones you are describing. I've also worn the Icebreaker merino gloves and they are quite good, too -- they don't look as sporty as you might imagine. They make versions for wearing as is and versions for wearing as liners.

I find bulkier knit gloves to be sort of useless because usually the wind blows right through the holes in the knit -- there has to be some wind resistance.

The so-called tech or touch gloves (i.e. with fingers that supposedly allow you to use your tech) have never worked for me at least for that purpose. They can be perfectly good as gloves, though -- just no good for using my phone!

The other kind of "tech" gloves -- i.e. gear gloves for specific sport -- often work very well for the sport in question, but are not necessarily warm enough for ordinary walking. (I have several tech fabric gloves that are great for runs but the spandex poly fabrics don't keep me warm if I am not moving quite quickly). Others are simply too bulky and warm -- they are meant for true outdoor sport.

Lisa, haha, I'm a wimp. So 20F isn't cold? That's what we're having tonight. That's rare though!

Well , I’m a northern friend and in 60 years I’ve never found a pair of gloves that hold up to a Canadian winter . My xc ski gloves maybe , but my hands only stay warm because of the activity . Oh - and now I read that you’re talking 30f temps , which in my world barely requires gloves at all

My son gifted me a pair of alpaca gloves a few years ago, and they are the bomb. I hate, hate cold hands and before these, I’d often wear gloves under wool mittens. Today was 8 degrees F (-5 with windchill) and it was the first time I needed mittens over the alpaca gloves for my walk. For any temps in the 20s or 30s, the alpaca is great.

I've been making do with an ancient (30 yrs old?) pair of ski gloves and reached the breaking point this morning. We don't get that cold that often and I'm not talking about hours outside so I thought I could keep making do, but today I just don't want to. We've had a week in the low 30s and my fingers were freezing this morning on a 15 minute dog walk. My old gloves are so bulky, and yet not warm, and surely fabric tech has improved in the last 30 years. What I want is:

Comfy warm to at least the low 30s.

Not overly bulky. Some thickness is expected but I don't want that huge, formed ski glove type I have now.

I don't care about tech friendly. My limited experience with that is that the fingertips that let you use tech also let air in to freeze your real fingertips.

Gloves, not mittens.

My northern friends, do you have something you like?
