It is not actually that supple (yet -- it seems like it'll break in and be soft, but not foldable-soft). And it has a stiff, reinforced bottom. For a soft, foldable one I suggest this very simple, soft leather Baggu tote. I decided it was too squishy for my needs, but it has some advantages. It's in Bloomingdale's 25% friends & family this week.

Greyscale, I like that Everlane bag a lot!! Is the leather soft and supple enough that it could be folded over to tuck it inside a bag? Looks like it might be? I like how simple the lines are, and that it's vertical.

I haven't ordered anything as I got sidetracked with a family emergency. But keep the suggestions coming as I'm still debating, although purchasing anything may be put on hold for awhile since I don't want to be bothered the next few weeks with having to make returns.

Ultimately I may wind up getting a couple different options, including a Neo, as I think I would like to have options, not just for travel but for out and about. My game plan may be to slowly replace my other handbags with totes as well as small cross-bodies as that seems more practical for my lifestyle these days.

I may go ahead and order the Lo&Son's cross-body as I quite like it, looks like a nice size, small yet big enough for the stuff I need to carry. Then I can check out the quality.

Very timely - I'm going through the same search right now.

I have a nice leather & nylon padded sleeve with shoulder strap, but sadly it's never quite the right answer for anything. And a very cool backpack with laptop compartment that I use as my usual carry on - perfect for many uses but no good for work travel when I'm giving a seminar and lugging it around between people's offices.

I decided for my trip to UCLA this week, I'd like a leather tote that my laptop could slip into, with room for my small crossbody purse and a sweater or umbrella. I just bought this Everlane bag today and I'm considering if it's the right choice. It's thin leather, and the proportions are a little off, to my eye. But it's a very nice bag, and inexpensive. The Madewell Transport tote is possibly an even better answer for me... but I do like something about this Everlane one. It's not something I could carry all the time though -- my shoulders are happiest with good padded straps, ideally a backpack that distributes the weight well.

I have the Lo & Sons OG bag. I love it. I travel about 2X month and fit a lot in it. I use that and a carryon roller bag for 5-10 day trips.

I used to fit a 13" laptop in it and recently switched to a 15"MBP - the 15" barely fits in the laptop sleeve - but does. I have to unzip the bag completely and it takes maybe 3 seconds longer at security, but it works. I love the bag - the pockets are well-thought out, the lining is a nice material that wipes clean, and the shoe pocket is handy for either heels, sneaker, or as a place to stash my bag of power supplies & adapters, depending on trip length. It looks classy too.

another vote for anything MC Wallace....i've been carrying one of their backpacks for the past 9 months...and i'm always amazed at how they seem to have thought everything out....designed by women for women, lightweight, pockets were you need them, many of the bags come in multiple sizes. nordstroms is calling this find a diaper bag, but the MZ Wallace site called it a travel bag-i like that it has multiple handles

My favorite is the Briggs and Reilly. Incredibly functional. Mine is also nylon. Although there was time in my life when I only bought leather, today I prefer nylon because it is lighter.

I also own a Longchamp Lepliage in navy, but I have never used it to travel with my laptop. I love the Lepliage, but it is an every day bag for me.

I hope you find something you love. Let us know what your final choice is because I am always interested in this topic. Although my personal goal for 2018 is to travel less for work, this type of information is always useful.

I have the Lo&Sons OMG bag and love it!

It has held up very well with moderate use (travel 1-2x/month). It holds more than I thought it would and is thoughtfully designed with good pockets for organization. So far, it shows no signs of wear with 3 years of use. My favorite part is the pocket that slips over my roller bag handle. I highly recommend the brand!

Shiny, I've been looking for the same thing (not just for travel but also daily use). At just under 5'3" and a very small frame I have the same issue as you with size.

I've been considering the Madewell medium transport tote based on the reviews (and the look appeals to me). However I'm one of those people who want the bag to have lots of interior compartments and pockets, and this one doesn't have quite as many as I'd like...

I also just saw a couple of totes on Betabrand, which unfortunately are not yet available, but which answer most of my prayers. The Stately Satchel is sleek, has lots of compartments, and doesn't seem too huge (my only beef is that their high-performance leather looks a bit plasticky to my eyes). The Big Travel Tote is also appealing as it seems practical and functional, although possibly too big. In any case they're not ready yet...

Would love to know what you end up getting, and what you think of it!

Shiny - I just looked at the video of the seville bag. I really like it. I don't need anything like it right now but I am totally tempted. If I need a bigger bag or to routinely carry a laptop, I would absolutely order it. Thanks for the info. I will check out the rest of the ones you posted. But I think that's a terrific bag!!

I'm really sold on MZ Wallace these days for travel. I hadn't heard of them before Diana mentioned a couple years ago. The light weight and all the pockets are a big plus and outweigh my preference for leather when I know carrying something heavy for a long day will be too much.

Here's what's always in my Briggs&Reilly:

Laptop

Laptop cords/chargers

Earphones

Kit with band aids, moleskin, and other emergency foot care items

Often a book to read on the plane

A scarf

A topper

A pair of comfortable shoes to switch into

A day clutch with wallet/ID/money/comb/lip stuff/gum/kleenex and cell phone

Warm pair of socks for the plane

Receipts in the outer pocket

And sometimes:
12. Overflow clothes, like if I'm going away for more than a week, and it won't all fit in the luggage. Example: one of my more recent trips was for two weeks combined business/pleasure, and I was able to do it all carry-on by stuffing the Briggs & Reilly to bursting!

Here's what I need to carry with me to meetings once I've landed:

Numbers 1, 5 -or-6, and all the items in #8. I've stopped taking my cords/chargers and just rely on the sympathy of colleagues to borrow theirs. That doesn't always work.

Janet, that Briggs & Reilly is exactly what I have, except in black! Love that bag. It is a true travel work horse. But, whenever I've worn it like a laptop bag to take to meetings on my shoulder, coworkers have commented that it looks like I'm about to topple over... even if it's lightly packed. Because it is big compared to my 5'0 size.

I mentioned the Neo on the other thread, but I really like the Daame bag too. Are you wanting the bag to stand up with a laptop in it? I've never had a tote do that. They always seem to flop over. The Neo won't stand up per se, but if you don't have a laptop in it, it will stay more or less upright when you set it down because it has a wide base.

Hmm. I have a Briggs and Riley tote that matches my carry-on size rolling suitcase, and I love it. It has a padded insert to hold a laptop, plenty of room for all my carry-on necessities (scarf, snack, water bottle, clutch, book, headphones), and an opening in the back that allows you to slip it over the handle of the suitcase so you can roll the whole thing around and not have to shlep the tote on your shoulder -- but carrying it on the shoulder is not bad at all. I don't see my model on their website -- mine is a few years old. It's burgundy, and it's nylon (sorry, not leather), but it has worn like iron and is really well-made. Not terribly fashion-y, but really solid.

I’ve been looking at bags myself and in my searches, I ran across the Madewell Transport bag. it didn’t work for me but this version of the Transport might work for you. Here’s a link to it:

Oh, another option. I have one of these Kate Spade Harmony totes that takes my laptop with room to spare, has feet so it stands up, and a zipper (but be aware that the zipper doesn't go 100% over the top so the corners are open (nothing will fall out but rain might get in). I don't use mine so much to travel because it's a bold floral print and doesn't usually go with all my outfits, but in a plain neutral or color that goes with your wardrobe it would also work. It's structured but still pretty lightweight, so it looks nice and doesn't break your back, but still is not as comfortable as a soft bag like the Le Pliage.

Shiny - they give away small laptop/brief bags at medical conferences. I saved the basic black on because it's perfect size but I don't feel good about the quality. I just bought and am awaiting the arrival of the Coach metropolitan soft brief in black. It will take a laptop and is the perfect size to fit into my tote with the handle that slips over my roll on bag. http://www.coach.com/coach-met.....var_color= Dont' know if that's what you're after. If you are interested I will post a detailed review when it arrives. Comes in other colors and would not overwhelm you petite frame

Honestly the Le Pliage (or my MZ Wallace that looks very similar) is what I always go back to (with the laptop in a sleeve). It's not leather but that is a plus for me because it's lighter. (And you could get the leather version anyway.)

I actually do not like bags with lots of compartments and pockets and things, as I never use them anyway! I usually do have a couple of pouches with different small things in them (one for chargers, one for knitting stuff, etc) that I use for organization when I travel.

You might want to look at MZ Wallace bags too. As I mentioned, my tote is very similar to the Le Pliage and I don't think it's made any more anyway, but they have lots of options, some with more pockets and sections. They cost about twice what a Le Pliage does but honestly I think they are better made and will last twice as long.

I've always wanted a Longchamp but without dividers/etc and no way to stand it up on the floor, I continually hesitate. I do already travel with cute nylon shopping bags that roll up small and are great for a variety of travel purposes, like instant beach bag.

I have a Fossil tote that is some sort of laminated fabric. Holds tons and has a zipper. Stiff enough to stand up on its own when set down. Shoulder straps. Loops over the handle of my roll-aboard.

A Longchamp Lepliage, however, is my favourite for travel. Light, waterproof, over the shoulder, zipper, endless carrying space. The only draw back is that without dividers, things can get jumbled inside and there is no padding. (I put small things in zip lock freezer bags: wallet, passport, cell phone in one. Electronic parapanalia and plug ins in another.)

This is a HEWI for me and has been for awhile. I may be over-thinking it, or my requirements are just too high and unreasonable, and I need to compromise somewhere.

Requirements:

I WFH and travel 50%, so I only need this bag for the travel part

Needs to fit a 13 inch Mac Air, but more than that: a scarf/sweater for the day, comb, wallet, lipstick etc etc.. everything I need for the day

Can't overwhelm my 5'0 frame

Prefer long straps, to carry on my shoulder, rather than on my arm

Would like it to be lightweight yet

Real leather .. (this may be where I need to compromise)

Either has to be able to fit within a carry on bag OR has a way of strapping on to my carry on bag handle, and then it's probably got to be a little larger to accommodate some more stuff.

What I've been doing while waiting for the HEWI
I started by using a fairly large, nylon bag that slips over the handles of my carry on. It's super lightweight (a plus!) and can pack a lot of overflow stuff for longer trips. I would tuck a clutch inside as my day purse. But when I'd empty it out at arrival and pack it with just what I needed for the day, it is clearly TOO BIG and looks wrong with my 5'0 frame.

Next I tried just carrying a clutch with laptop in a simple sleeve. That works okay but is annoying when going on from business meeting straight to social hour/dinner. And also, no room for a scarf/topper (it gets cold in those conference rooms!

Next my mom was decluttering and from her I got an inexpensive pleather bag which is not intended to be a laptop bag but is the PERFECT SIZE. And weight. And (empty) it slips right into the outer pocket of my luggage. It has convenient pockets on the outside for hotel key & cell phone. Zippered middle pocket. And a fun patterned lining. And just barely enough room for a scarf/topper. Only drawback was I'd have to shuffle wallet and other purse items once landing, and before getting on the plane again.

Unfortunately, since it's pleather, and I've been cramming it in the outer pocket of my luggage, it's showing a lot of wear and needs to be replaced. For reference the size of this nearly-HEWI bag is 11x16.

Bags I'm considering

Lo & Sons 13" Seville -- I like that it comes with a sleeve that slips on over your luggage, and has the option to swap out the shell. Except the shell has to pack in your luggage, and I'm not sure I want to take up valuable luggage space. Also at 12.5x18 I worry it may be a tad too large for me (and maybe most of that extra inches is taken up by the design, rather than being usable space?) It's also 2.6 lbs!!

Haerfest Eva tote -- 11x14. Looks like a beautiful bag. I like the strap design. Not sure what it weighs. And no zipper. :-(

Cuyana Work Satchel -- 11.5x13.5; weighs in heavy at 3 lbs. Not sure if I like the straps. I'd prefer a shoulder bag to a crossbody. I don't think I want to carry my laptop in the crook of my arm.

Daame Dana Tote -- 12x13 and the lightest at 1.4 lbs. Don't know anything about this brand.

Knomo Audrey -- my sister highly recommends.

What have I not considered? Suggestions? Advice? Insights?
