Just another side note on the Retreat pant. I find them very “polished” when I wear them as I am a person who likes to be “neat” when I am putting together an outfit. I had ordered the Retreat pant on a whim (early season sale got me) and was prepared to send them back immediately as I was convinced I had made a mistake. I put them on and was surprised at how well they fit and how soft the linen is.

As for getting convinced I must have something - I think I enjoy the hunt a little too much. I often am hunting for a lifestyle I really don’t have!

I don't iron either, and too am not about start. I'm wearing a linen blend popover style top right now that was creased from being in my closet, and just wearing it for a couple of hours has let all the creases fall out. I have a couple of big linen shirts too and don't wear them. I never know what to do with them as I don't do the open shirt-over-tank look.

I have been more tempted by linen this summer than I have for many years. I've wondered about pants but mostly what tempts me is linen shirts. I never found pants to be all that cool, but a pretty linen "big shirt" seemed like something I really wanted.

What always stops me? I don't iron. I don't plan to start. For the shirts, it's the "crisp" I want, not the rumpled/lived in. So anything linen I've had for the past 20+ years, I've worn once and then it sits in the laundry room for for most of the summer, waiting for me to suck it up and iron it. That has been my aha moment of the summer. I can admire, but really should pass.

Lisa, I know that phenomenon all too well.

Lately I’ve been down that rabbit hole with a non-fashion item: a day pack backpack that can accommodate my cameras for hiking and travel. I’m looking for certain kinds of functionality and now all my social media ads are backpacks, LOL.

Oh, Lisa! I think we all have one or more categories of clothing where we look for the perfect thing. It’s a never ending quest. I have a ‘thing’ about finding the perfect suitcase for my carry-on travel style. I ‘waste’ so much time searching and reading on line materials, etc. In the long run, I don’t really mind the time spent because it’s all grist for the mill and the information I get during the research rattles around in my brain so that when I do find the ‘thing’ I can measure it against my expectations and make an informed decision.

Vis a vis linen pants - I don’t think I would ever wear linen anything as ‘workwear’. Regardless of the quality of linen, or the superiority of blend, linen is essentially a casual vibe - and you have to be ‘at ease with the crease’. I iron all my linen, and even give previously worn items a quick press, if I feel the need. That said, linen and linen blends are really great in high heat and humidity when it comes to comfort. If your work environment is A/C or otherwise temperature controlled - don’t bother! If you are running errands, or meeting friends for drinks on an outdoor patio - by all means add a pair of cropped linen trousers to your wardrobe.

I’m retired (as I’m sure you know) and over the past two summers have moved from performance fabric shorts, and cotton jersey t-shirts to natural fibres - linen and cotton. I spend a lot of time out of doors, and these fabrics are just so much cooler/comfortable in the high heat and the humidity we are experiencing in my part of the world from May through September. If I lived where you live, or still lived in Timmins, ON - I’d probably ignore the chatter about summer wear, and save my fashion $$ for winter coats!

I think we can all do this Lisa - so good catch!! There is no need to wear linen pants but retailers do push them.

My realisation this year was that I don't really like a drawstring pant - I prefer either a jean, trouser or a side zip. Or a flat front with elastic at the back is also okay. Also took me a while to realise I don't really like the dropped shoulder.

2 recommendations for the Athleta Retreat pant - which means they must be good ! However, they are out of black in my size which saved me from .....my aha moment /update:

It came to me today that I often do this with an item of clothing or footwear: I become obsessed with the idea that I must have whatever it is , and go on a relentless mission to get it. This usually entails a cycle of ordering and returning, or ordering and then keeping without sticking to my so-called standards for quality and polish.....because I'm frustrated by the return cycle and by spending so much time searching for the perfect pant/shoe/top/whatever. I end up with what happened with my linen pant collection : 4 pair , all in black, in different styles and fits, exactly none of which I was really happy with . This was over a 2- 3 year period, I think. This is ridiculous . But I have done it before, and am actually surprised it took me until this morning to realize this. I don't really even love linen pants! They lack the polish I want for my work clothes, and they aren't so special that I even need them for weekend wear. Just because every retailer offers a "Linen Edit" every season , it doesn't mean I need to participate.

This is what I missed from partipating in the forum : being able to share thoughts and questions and have the process lead to clarity of mind when trying to control a wardrobe. Thank you all for your suggestions here, and depending on my work situation next summer (reduced hours and semi retiring is in the plan) I may investigate those Athleta pants :).

Hopefully you find a great pair! I have two that I like but they are both a blend but maybe worth considering. I have a black pair from Reitmans - wide leg and have worn them for three summers now. Excellent washability. The second is from Uniqlo. These are a bit thinner which I appreciate because of the heat.

Retreat Linen wide leg pants from Athleta. I have them in natural but I believe them come in black. So comfortable, drapey - really good quality. I love the fact that the pockets are forward - not in the side seams - very Eileen Fischer but not the price point. They come in petite sizes as well. I highly recommend them.

I like my linen to be a bit softer than the classic Irish linen. I bought a couple of linenshirts last summer and had to wash them a dozen times before they lost their initial scratchy feel.

I bought a pair of the J Crew Soleil pants on super sale this year and LOVE them (in white). They are lined, which may or may not affect your decision. They feel so light and airy, just a pleasure to put on.

I also have two pairs of Loft slightly cropped linen pull-on pants, which are a heavier weight, but still very soft. They are a wider leg, and hit my ankle bone (I'm 5'6").

I also saw a beautiful pair of linen pants last week at Banana Republic in a variety of colors.
Lise - I agree that "older" linen is better. Some of the newer blends take away that luxe look and feel of true linen.

I never thought I’d bother with linen pants, but I tried these before I left on my trip, and they stuck in my mind so I went back and purchased them. They have turned out to be an excellent buy, even though I thought they were a little pricey at $150. They’re a 55/45 linen/rayon blend that doesn’t crease as much as 100% linen. The fabric feels substantial but they felt cool enough that I have now worn them on 100 degree days, both in France and here at home. They also laundered beautifully.

https://www.belladahl.com/prod.....#038;_ss=r

I don’t know whether Bella Dahl can be sourced easily in Canada but it may be worth looking for them. On their website I don’t see this specific pant in black (I got henna brown, which plays really nicely with my blues, as well as black, white, etc), but I do see a lot of other similar styles. They had a good bit of length on them, even for me, so others might need to have them hemmed.

I saw the Athleta has some that look pretty nice too, FWIW. I feel like I now could see myself buying and wearing another pair of linen — or maybe just linen blend — pants.

I have a pair of 55% linen/45% viscose blend and they are awesome. They have heft (so would be suitable for work) and do not crease yet they are cool. When you touch the material you get the impression they will not be cool, yet they really are. They were thrifted, an unknown brand Vunic. My point being that some blends are really good and some are not and I would think it is very difficult to ascertain when doing online shopping, so good to get feedback here for sure. I also think the linen of old generally was of a better quality.

After a linen blend fail (the fabric ‘grew’ to a bizarre degree with body heat) I was hesitant to re-enter the linen pant market again. However, wanting a pair of lightweight summer pants in black, I went thrifting. These Coldwater Creek pants scratch the itch, and I’ve had them since 2023. I wear them 10-12 times per year, so pretty good cost per wear. I wish they were a smidge longer - but inseam length is always a challenge for me.

Hmm. Lots of good ideas so far, thank you! The JCrew option sounds worth looking into, as do the Colette full length ( I have had a couple of pair of pants in the Colette cut ) and Eileen Fisher. None of these brands are available (locally ) at retail to me, but I'm familiar with all of them.

Unfortunately, Quince doesn't ship to Canada. Indigoprint - I'm not familiar with the first 3 brands you suggested but will check them out right now.

Irina - the MD pants I linked above are really nice, and I may indeed order them. I'm not much of a Poshmarker but I do have an account and should get more familiar with it. Might be a new hobby once I cut my work hours next year ;).

Interesting other hear that others have not necessarily found linen pants to be easy either - and I wonder if maybe I'm asking too much of a linen pant to find it suitable for my job. Maybe they are inherently casual and should be left for those occasions. Angie, I'll look at RL and Boden but neither brand are easy to source here - and RL is usually quite out of my price range. Which division/label did you source yours from?

I added 3 pairs of linen pants to my summer wardrobe this season (see finds).

Hands down the JCrew Soleil pant is my favorite. I started with the white (which is lined) and adored the fit, drape, and weight of the white linen so much I ended up adding the navy pair (which is not lined). I'm short (5'3") so they are full length on me.

Both JCrew pants dress up and down easily and I think they will last multiple seasons. The JCrew Irish linen is quite nice against the skin.

I also added the Caslon easy straight leg linen pant in flax. While I like the color, they are not as soft or thick as the JCrew linen pants and they don't dress up or down as easily either. The Caslon is definitely a more casual pant, the linen is on the thinner side (not see through but if they were white it might be), they are not lined, and there's just not as nice of a drape or feel against the skin compared to the JCrew. Again the Caslon is full length on me.

I like linen from Flax, Cutloose and Fenini.
A boutique in town carries them, and they claim to be made in the USA, so I don’t how available they would be for you in Canada.
I have thrifted some of Eileen Fisher and J.jill and like them very much.
Quince is getting a lot of attention online, but I have not purchased from them.
I did get good customer service when I asked about a product, but was most likely AI.

Have you checked out Athleta? They have a full length, swishy, pull on linen pant with slits at the ankle. I’ve had these in teal for 3 years now. They’re still going strong so I bought them in black this spring. I’d say the quality is good but the fit is excellent - slim enough through the hip to avoid the “elephant leg” look IYKWIM.

I have a really nice pair that was made in Greece (thrifted). Ok, I understand that is not so helpful but I am wondering if they have wider distribution, later I will check for an actual label.

Well, I hope others can help you find what you're after, because I've had no luck with full length linen pants. They just look too baggy or frumpy on me. I've tried both loose and slimmer fits to no avail. I thought maybe the problem was the drawstring waist on some of them but I own a cropped linen blend with a drawstring that I actually love. Maybe its just that a cropped length works better on me for some reason. Its still a mystery. Hope you have better luck.

My clients tend to like the linen Colettes from Anthropologie, which are sold out and cropped:

Occasionally from J.Crew and Eileen Fisher. Always worth a look!

Personally I like linen from Boden and Ralph Lauren. The quality and drape are gorgeous! I've had their 100% linen in my wardrobe for years - and it looks good. Washes well, and feels good against the skin!

Funny you asked…
A great full length pair of black 100% linen (I don’t like most mix fabrics) pants was on my list for a few years. Finally I bought it! From Massimo Dutti Oh, joy! Paid to have it shortened. And… they still sit in my closet with tags on. It turned out that this was a great idea a few years ago when I worked in the office.
But you are going to wear yours out to work, so. I love Massimo Dutti linen. It’s a good quality for the price. Most brands are disappointing when it comes to linen. I would encourage you to give it a try.

My most worn pair is Eileen Fisher 100% linen pants in white bought on Poshmark. They are perfect for me! I would buy them in any other color!

Lisa, I'm not going to be much help here. But I can commiserate, because I've had the "perfect" pair (or pairs) of linen pants and a skirt on my own list for about 4 years. I admit, I shop for these only sporadically, and obviously without the dedication required to source them. For me, black won't work, and neither will most of the other neutrals (browns) I have seen, though I would go for a cinnamon or cognac or a grey as well as navy.

However, I notice Irina pretty much always has some fab linen pants. Many of them are older, but even so, maybe she'll have finding tips, and also, alterations ideas. I have this feeling that maybe she shortens hers (if she wants cropped), and so on.

I would really like to find the right linen or linen blend pants, both lengths, If the blend is good, cotton-linen can actually be fantastic because it does not wrinkle.

The best linen pant I've had in all my time at YLF from from J. Crew. I had a white pair and a navy pair. I still have the navy and I use them for PJ pants! They were/ are a beautiful linen, with a bit of a sheen, a lovely drape, and a herringbone pattern. They barely wrinkle, the weight/ drape is so nice. I think I got them in 2015 though and the style reflects that -- so they are obviously not what you are after.

I think some BR linen has been good in the past few years. These ones get nearly 5 stars: https://bananarepublic.gapcana.....xt=linen%2

I know many of us are already casting an eye to fall, and I am too. I'm a little tired of my summer work wardrobe . However, I still have another 5 -6 weeks left of summer wear , weather depending of course, and I have not been happy with my linen pant situation .

This is maybe a pipe dream, but I'd love a pair of long (full length), drapey wide leg linen pants in black . I have now put 3 pair of black linen/cotton blend pants into a donate bag because the fits are off (usually too big and baggy/unflattering ) and the fabric (note the blend ) is subpar .None of these pants look good with all day wear and I imagine I got exactly what I paid for. I still have one pair of wide leg cropped linen/cotton pants and they are ok , but I'd really love a full-length pair . Black linen has been part of my summer work wardrobe for a few years now and I've always assumed I need to have a couple of pair. But maybe I don't?

I'm a poor shopper in that I have little time, so tend to order and keep whatever sort of fits as long as it's not too tight , and don't spend a lot of time on research. I know, I know, but it is what it is. It costs me a lot of money to be this incompetent.

So the question is, do any of you have a really great pair of linen pants that you love and would buy again if you needed to? Anything to recommend? I know my timing is off and it may mean I don't find a pair this year, but in prep for next year, I'm interested in resources I might not have investigated. I have a pair from Massimo Dutti in my shopping cart, and may order those...but not convinced I know what I'm doing with linen anymore. Link below - finds collector not working for me .
