Oh, thanks Jenn! I think I"m going to try the EB one right now while everything's at 50% off. :)

Chris -- fit is definitely important. My go-to right now is the Uniqlo merino kkards suggested above. Unfortunately it's just a bit too warm/itchy under a jacket. Great on its own but not layered. I have one cotton Uniqlo turtleneck, because I do like their Supima, but the fit and construction is just a little too plain. I thought I wouldn't mind it underneath a topper, but I just don't enjoy wearing it. Thus my renewed search.

La P it sounds like you are looking for something with a fit that looks more modern to your eye than the New England roots thing you want to avoid. So the fit could be more important than anything else within the fabrics you are looking for, and that will of course depend on your body shape etc. Where do you buy other tops with fits like you are looking for? Start there....

I have one from Talbots too (like Zibbets) that fits me really well, although it's not ribbed, and has lasted for several years. These days I mostly wear turtlenecks on their own with a looser fit and am looking for cashmere and merino so don't have any other specific brand suggestions. I also wear the LLBean cotton ones but ONLY underneath a heavier tneck sweater that is a little itchy or when I want an extra layer.

I also like the look of the Eddie Bauer one Jenn posted, and the Boden one looks nice too.

Here are three more. I don't know the SET or J.McLaughlin brands, and have no personal experience with any of these particular items, so can't vouch for quality/fit:-)

I have the club Monaco one. It’s great, size up though—it runs really small. I usually wear XS and had to get an M.

Oh, I like that Eddie Bauer one. I thought at first it was just like the LL Bean standards of my & LaPed's New England childhoods, but the looser, stand-up collar and rib knit make a big difference.

(I really have nothing against the standards -- but indeed, my mother still wears them all the time, and I just don't feel like they express my personal style.)

Eddie Bauer has a couple. I'm wearing one right now, in fact, though it was from a few years ago.

This one, in particular, is 97% cotton with some stretch.

Greyscale -- me too! Every time I put on a turtleneck, I'm battling the demons of my New England childhood. And it's the one thing that makes me feel that I'm dressing-like-my-mom in a bad way. I've looked at that Madewell top a couple times; I'm not sure how I feel about lettuce-edge. It's very 90s to me, and may, again, be too much like something I wore as a kid.

I think I just need turtlenecks to be as Left Bank as possible. :)

kkards -- I actually have both of those Uniqlo turtlenecks! The merino one I find just a smidge too itchy underneath a blazer or similar, now that everyone has their heat on. It's good as a standalone sweater, though. And I love Heattech, but only as a baselayer. I feel weird wearing it "exposed" kwim?

Thanks all! Lots to browse!

And I agree that lightweight jersey turtlenecks don't inspire me. I used to wear them a lot as a kid, and I like the look, but I have one of the J Crew tissue ones and I almost never wear it.

I really like the ones I got at Talbots last year. They're cotton, substantial enough to stand on their own, wash well and fit just right. The one that looks most similar to mine is the button cuff one: https://www.talbots.com/online.....038;select

The buttons aren't necessarily an upgrade. If you don't like them, they could easily be removed. I do like the wide cuff this year.

Looking for a turtleneck that's a little less warm than merino or cashmere to layer under jackets/blazers/dresses. A cotton blend would be great -- a touch of wool/cashmere/silk is fine. Would really like it to be ribbed and quite fitted, and hold its shape well. In other words, a step up from a plain old jersey turtleneck a la Lands End/LLBean. Nothing makes me feel less fab than a plain old jersey turtleneck. Also not interested in the tissue weight ones from JCrew/Madewell. Too thin. This will mostly be a layering piece but needs to stand on its own if I take the topper off.

Hoping to add one black and one in a bright/rich colour. Ideas?

I'm thinking of trying these two -- one from Club Monaco, one from Boden. Does anyone have other recs for me to try?
