I tend to have very specific things in mind when I'm shopping too, and I actually think secondhand shopping can be more useful here, because there tends to be more variety. Especially since you have a little bit of time to set up a search &amp; check to see newly listed pieces. The money savings don't hurt either! If you decide to look, be sure to check out the 'vintage' category on Ebay as well as the women's ones, because the older wool coats often have the very best quality/cost ratio. And they tend to have more tailored details. :)</p> <p>Most sellers are happy to provide lots of measurements that you can compare to garments you own &amp; like the fit of: at a minimum, I'd suggest getting the width at the back shoulder seam, bust width, waist width, hip width if it's not a fit &amp; flare, length from shoulder seam to waist seam, length of the sleeves, and length from shoulder seam to hem. I have very few occasions to dress up, but I do need a coat that I can wear in the winter, as all I have are puffy coats, parkas, and leather jackets. I do think something like a plaid wool coat would look pretty stellar with jeans and boots, so it would not languish in my closet.</p> <p>I would love to find something in a navy blue/green tartan but can't seem to find anything like that right now. &nbsp;Am I trying to shop too early?
