I can help with Myer if you need it.

I think the J Crew quality is comparable to Country Road. It’s a pretty traditional look except for the upturned lapels. It’s a slightly boxy, longer style, which seems to be the norm these days. Not as long and boxy as some of the double breasted jackets that are trending. I think with Cue you would get sharper, more “of the moment” tailoring (like sharp shoulders or flared cuffs) but I don’t know whether the quality would be much different. I like that it’s 98% wool. That’s hard to get these days.

I’m wearing mine this morning (perfect for 16c with a thin jumper underneath). Rubbish photo but you can see the texture.

I did look at J Crew online - and that is a possibiity. That jacket is lovely. It is $400 NZD but I think 30% discount but once I factor in shipping it will be close to $320 NZD which is about what I think I would spend on Witchery, Cue, Storm etc - do you think the quality is similar or better?

I like gold buttons mostly Angie too!! Not 100% sure in this case mostly because my other blazer has gold buttons too.

My own Zara jackets are good quality, and I too, have had them for years. They are still going strong! Zara gets a bad wrap for being fast fashion, but actually, they are more sustainable than most because of their very vertical supply chain. They even make some sustainable retailer lists.

Lots of good suggestions, and another who likes the gold buttons :)

Sally, you might want to check out the J Crew Regent blazer. It comes in camel. Also in tall. I have it in black. It's a nice classic blazer. Wool but more the weight of wool suiting than overcoat weight. You would need to layer under it in winter.

Thanks all - that is a good starting point. Should be heading to work now so will be brief...

I do like gold buttons- not always though. I have gold buttons on my other blazer so probably would lean to not gold on this one.

In terms of style- either single or double breasted- not too boxy. I like some tailoring to provide shape.

Will do some browsing tonight!!

Zara is indeed a bit of a hit and miss... so far I have been unlucky with their outwear but I know a lot of people who have bought some lovely coats and jackets!

Cos currently has a boyfriend blazer in camel, I hope I managed to attach a picture!

I am not sure if it is available where you live, but I would recommend to have a look at Gerard Darel - they use the same factory as Max Mara and the quality of their jackets and coats is amazing - especially when bought during the sales!

I like this one from Zara. Mostly cotton and wool with some synthetic. But because it’s black and white it will probably read grey. Definitely not toffee!

I’ll keep my eye out for other possibilities.

Sal - I echo Bijou. Veronica Beard makes extraordinary jackets, very flattering and versatile esp with the dickeys. On sale you can find them for less than 33% of the retail price. The double breasted styles run large. Most run TTS. If you read reviews, which are typically available you can get a great idea of how the particular jacket runs. Tailoring is excellent and they are the most flattering blazers I have ever owned. I should know I own 11 blazers and all but one was on super sale!

Sally, are you looking for longer or classic length? Fitted or oversized? Winter weight or Spring?

I’ve had a lot of success with Zara jackets and, despite their reputation for fast fashion, I’ve kept mine for years. I do think Zara sizing is unpredictable however. If in doubt, size up.

Sal, I have bought a Veronica Beard and JCrew blazer online. They are expensive, but you can get them drastically reduced on sale. In these brands I dropped down two sizes, so a US 10 will be equivalent to a NZ 14. My VB blazer is the turquoise and JCrew is navy, both are very good quality.

I don't like those too-shiny looking and weird? buttons, either. I am a huge button changer. Have a looksee at a similar high end blazer and see if you like their button choice and then copy. Nice buttons don't tend to live at chain sewing shops but in a specialty sewing store or online. Or if you have a thrift/op shop nearby, can often score a good set by buying a jacket cheaply for the buttons.

Oh but Sally those buttons are gorgeous! Are you not a “gold” person? I thought you were, rather than a “silver” person, given your blonde hair...
I suppose you would have to drive up to Zara in Sylvia Park if you wanted to try it on, otherwise it’s the whole shipping thing...
BTW, although I couldn’t really understand why due to the whole fast fashion environmental effects, Zara did really well in the TEAR Fund Ethical Fashion Guide-got an A!
I remember a coat that I got at a church fair or something, in my teens- I really smartened it up buying new buttons.
Lots of button choices these days

Hi All,

I would like to add another blazer to my wardrobe. My current collection is not ideal, probably because two have been passed on by friends - I do like them and wear them but maybe would not have purchased them.

I was thinking a toffee or camel colour, or black. I want it to be fairly classic in style as I expect to own this for a good length of time. I would wear it with jeans and boots, or jeans and sneakers, or work pants and oxfords, or maybe even over a dress. I probably am leaning to black as I don't think I could go wrong with a black blazer......

The attached finds are my current jacket/blazer collection.

Double breasted soft grey is the only true blazer and the only true workhorse in this group.

Black is a very fitted style with exaggerated shoulders - I do wear and like it but it is not versatile.

Red leather jacket I also wear but it is not a workhorse.

Cream is very much a summer weight jacket - I think I only wore it once last year but I do like it.

The toffee is more of a short coat than a jacket.

I would buy internationally if I could be confident of fit. I would usually take a NZ/Aus 14 in a blazer, which I think is a US10. My shoulders are often the fit issue with jackets and I am 5 ft 8 (174cm tall).

Has anyone seen any great blazers online that I should consider?

Thanks in advance
Sally
