Love Banff!

This is off topic, but I recommend the vegetarian restaurant Nourish Bistro...such good food! Try the Nachos, they have the most interesting ingredients!

Have a great trip, you already got the best advice on clothes.

Are you staying overnight at Jasper and Banff Park? .... If you are, you really want to bring more warm clothes as it gets chilly at night. I like the outfit you are bringing, layering is the key as the weather tends to warm up a lot more during the day and cool off a lot at night. The temperature variation is rather huge.

The jackets you show in the photos look great! Bring a thin sweater or warm shirt with a t-shirt to change into if it gets too hot. Jeans is definitely a must have there and given the rugged terrain, you would want a pair of rugged hiking boots too.

Those two parks are super scenic, I think the most important device there would be your camera. Have loads of fun!!!!!!!!

I'd say that packing your fleece, vest, and J Crew jacket would more than get you through any cool weather in late August, even if you were coming from the Keys. What you are wearing in the picture is the sort of combo I might wear in the mid-to-late fall or spring when there is still some melting snow on the ground in the mountains. As Suz mentioned, layering works well in the mountains and on the coast because temperatures can fluctuate quite a bit from day to day, and even hour to hour.

Your white jeans and a nice top would work well in the summer if you are going out for dinner in Banff or Jasper, or walking around in Vancouver or the Banff townsite. Banff has a couple of more elegant restaurants in the Banff Springs Hotel, the Chateau Lake Louise, or the Rimrock where people do dress a bit for dinner (women in a dress, men in a blazer) but most places are fairly informal with quite a range of attire.

And I laughed at your comment about staring at someone in heels and a dress. We stand in our shorts and sandals, staring at people perspiring in their winter gear as they walk around Banff in the middle of summer. The Gap store in Banff makes good money selling them shorts and T-shirts.

Wow, you all are so generous with your thoughtful suggestions. Thank you! Lesson learned: Fewer Coats, More Shorts. I am definitely packing more summer-like attire and worrying less about keeping warm. I have a sporty white "down" vest which I can layer over a sweater or hoodie if I'm cold. It is lightweight and will pack easily. My favorite man--my local UPS driver-- will be delivering several options for a rain shell jacket any day now. (Like Pavlov's Dog, I know the sound of his truck from 2 blocks away.). It seems like my coldest location will be downtown San Francisco or Tofino. Gaylene, I loved your comments about Tofino. I can relate because here in Key West, if a woman is dressed in a fancy dress and high heels with coordinating clutch (and not on her way to a wedding), we all stare.

What are your thoughts on packing white jeans? My trip is 4 weeks and I will only have laundry facilities for a few days 10 days in. Hotel laundries might laugh if I ask them to pull them out of the dryer after 5 minutes. :)

I love the challenge of packing light for a long trip! Seriously. It must be my math brain.
Susan, photo shows my fleece (7years old so it will be fine in Tofino) and a down vest (might be too preppy for Tofino but I don't look like a local anyways).

Ha! So glad you weighed in, Gaylene -- I was hoping you would.

Seriously, listen to Gaylene. She knows whereof she speaks.

What she says completely resonates with me and that is why I suggested rainproof shell with underlayers if required. I honestly think you will mostly be wearing summer clothes, with perhaps a thin layer overtop to account for the differences in temperature from your home climate.

Banff, Jasper, Osoyoos, Vancouver, and Tofino have been my playgrounds for the past 40 years so here are my recommendations:

Banff and Jasper ought to be warm and sunny enough (daytime temps around 75-85F in mid-August) to hike in shorts and a T-shirt during the day. The mornings and evenings will be much cooler (think 45-55F night) so you'll need a hoodie or sweater and a pair of long pants. Mountain weather, though, is notoriously changeable so you should always pack a light-weight rain shell and fleece if you are hiking in the backcountry (down and cotton are pretty much useless in wet weather) because stormy weather with significant amounts of wind and rain can blow in very quickly. Both Banff and Jasper are pretty informal and you'll see gear-type clothing like fleece and hiking boots worn almost everywhere by everyone.

Osoyoos is a desert climate and will be HOT during the day (85-100F) so definitely shorts, sandals, sundresses, and bathing suits here. Evenings do cool off, but not like in the mountains. Temps can stay in the mid-eighties until the wee hours of the morning. Air conditioning is common and is usually set at freezing so bring a sweater for indoors. Rain would be unusual, but can happen, usually as a part of a storm cell moving quickly eastward, but most people huddle indoors until the system blows itself out.

Vancouver ought to be glorious in mid-August with warm, sunny days. People will be out in their summer shorts, skirts, and tops doing all kinds of athletic activities. The city vibe is casual, active wear with a twist of fashion. Lulelemon was born here and you'll see lots of it on the streets. My J Crew jacket works perfectly here because it provides enough rain resistance when used with an umbrella to handle summer showers quite nicely. Some places are air conditioned, but, because the temperatures are more moderate (65-75F), it usually isn't turned as low as in Osoyoos.

Tofino is right next to the Pacific Ocean and can be gloriously sunny or damp and foggy--you just take it as it is. Your mountain fleece and rain shell can come in handy here if the clouds and wind roll in, as will your long pants. If the weather is nice, you'll be in shorts and sandals with a sweater thrown over your shoulders. Tofino is definitely a laid-back, northern surfer, idiosyncratic town. Lululemon is not appreciated here unless it is old and ratty, but, on the other hand, the sky's the limit for your rain gear and surf board. ;)

I have to run, but let me know if you want recommendations for places to stay and eat--or anything else--good wineries, shops, etc.

I brought a jean jacket and that's good enough.

I agree with Suz. I have spent time in Jasper/Banff in the summer, early fall and winter. I also have been to Vancouver in the spring, summer, fall and winter. Also, I have been to Toffino. Well actually I have been to all the places you have are going except Osoyoos. I also have been to Key West.

Jasper and Banff could be warm and you probably won't need the jackets. We were there 2 years ago in early October and hiked in T shirts and shorts. At night we wore jeans and a Lululemon hoodie. The west coast is very casual. We are from Ontario and use to hot, humid, cold, anything climate.

I find a down vest a good thing to have for layering. I don't know if you have one but that might work. Suz's idea of a thermal underlayer is good. I always bring one. It doesn't take up much room and is handy.

Lucky you. I love the West Coast. We almost moved there in the early 90s. Sigh.......... We toss the idea around now that we are retired.

That itinerary is a bit of a packing challenge in terms of both temperature and activities! For me (Vancouver based now, have spent lots of time in the Banff area), the J Crew jacket would be perfect as a topper for your non-hiking time in Banff. I don't think you need the puffer, it won't be cold enough for it and you can always layer under the J Crew if you're a bit chilly. I expect you'll see a lot of fleece jackets and hoodies (Lululemon and similar), and light rain jackets, worn for hiking type activities in Banff. If it was me, I'd be packing the J Crew jacket and using a Lululemon hoodie for a second topper. If the weather forecast looks dry, I wouldn't bother with a rain jacket. I think in Vancouver etc you could get by with the J Crew jacket and an umbrella if it rains.

The hoodie or fleece will also come in handy in Tofino, where it will be cool-ish even if it's sunny due to breeze off the ocean and the amazing-smelling coolness of the rainforest once you move inland from the beach. It will definitely cool off in the evenings in Tofino too.

It sounds like you have an amazing trip planned! I love everywhere you plan on visiting, all are great destinations.

ETA: when I was in Banff for July, I wore shorts, sandals, short sleeved tees on sunny days. In the early morning and evening I popped on a cotton sweater or a denim jacket. For hiking, I wore the same type of sweater over a tee, and sometimes brought a rain jacket in case of showers. Granted, that was a fairly warm July there. And I'm used to cooler temperatures than you. Having said that....it gets into the low 90s and humid here in summer so I am used to heat.

ETA 2: Drink water. LOTS of it. And have a really really great moisturizer and sun screen.

Wow, what an amazing holiday you have planned! You'll get lots of good advice here. I have spent a fair bit of time at Banff in different seasons -- a few years ago I was there for the entire month of July, and this year for all of May.

Temperatures can vary considerably in the mountains from year to year and even from day to day, so averages are quite misleading. Also, if you are from Florida, you may find the same air cooler than someone more used to Canadian temperatures. The other variables are humidity and altitude. Altitude sickness is possible when you are coming from a place that is sea level (and can affect perception of temperature) and of course there is almost zero humidity in the mountains, which feels very different!

Here are my thoughts, for what they are worth:

FOR ME...(coming from south eastern Ontario, Canada) none of those jackets would really be necessary in August. Definitely not the puffer. It would be too hot. The field jacket could work...but might feel a bit heavy for active pursuits.

What I would bring in this situation would be a rainproof jacket of some kind, under which I could layer gear fleece (for hiking) or cotton sweaters (like a Breton style sweater) or lightweight wool sweaters. I might take a scarf like the one you've shown for a bit of extra warmth. If I were really worried that the temperatures might drop, I would take a pair of thermal underwear -- tops and bottoms. Get at a gear store. If not bad looking/ in a good colour for you, the top could double as a streetwear top.

Since a rainproof coat would also be a good idea for Vancouver and Tofino (and possibly San Francisco) if you don't own a good one, this would be my suggestion for a smart purchase. It will also pack more easily than the field jacket, because it's lightweight.

I'd look at North Face, Helly Hensen, and maybe McKinley or Patagonia.

Hi,
I hope my YLF friends can advise me on outerwear and layering for my week in Jasper and Banff mid-August. I have read the weather reports and see temps much cooler than I'm used to, which will be nice. I own 2 jackets, shown here. Will they work or do I need to shop? (I don't mind shopping!) The green jacket is a J Crew field jacket that I can fit layers under. (I think it's too wintery.) The red jacket is J Crew lightweight puff jacket, which is warmer.
My time in this area will be focused on outdoor activities, including hiking.

My holiday also includes 3 weeks in San Francisco, Seattle, Vancouver, Tofino, Osoyoos. I'm packing the short trench coat and a white "leather" moto jacket (if I have room) for the city time.

Thanks in advance from Key West,
Susan
