Here in Southern Wisconsin we are crossing our fingers that we don't get a killing frost for another few weeks. The tomatoes and peppers are not very healthy looking with the cool weather we've been having lately, lows in the mid-40s F (7C).
I just heard some sad news that a new disease is wiping out garden and native impatiens! It is spread by planting contaminated plants, but once it gets into your soil it may be nearly impossible to get rid of it, or ever grow impatiens again. Managing impatiens downy mildew in the landscape

We've planted things for the fall garden down here. Sorry no pics yet but we have loads of basil growing wildly (self seeded), mint, oregano, tarragon, and other herbs. Chard is doing well and I just put in other greens arugula, lettuce, beets. The tomatoes may or may not produce another crop - it's hard to say, depends on when the first freeze arrives (usually in late November/earl y December but maybe early this year).

I have a few planters on my deck. Things I discovered, petunias are pretty dang hardy. They've last and flowered since late spring. Also geraniums do well, I got those later. Dahlias, my last purchase do not work at all.
I'm just happy I kept most of it alive.

We haven't had a freeze yet this year (we're still having highs in the upper 80s to low 90s) so our vegetable garden (especially the tomatoes) is still going strong. This year I planted herbs in pots on the deck instead of flowers and I loved it. They did better than the ones in the vegetable beds, and it was more convenient for snipping a little for cooking. And I love zinnias. These are called Cut and Come Again. In the foreground is our winter squash. I planted butternut squash. It tastes good and is a little easier to cut open than some. I don't need an axe!

Your garden looks beautiful, Carla!

Our yard is a disaster. It was looking so beautiful, and then...a big storm knocked out the remaining part of a huge old cherry tree in our back yard, which in turn destroyed a section of our fence. Well, before we could rig up a barrier, the deer discovered the new entryway. (By way of explanation: We live in the woods in an area where deer hunting is not permitted, and the deer have become a huge problem around here. They're overpopulated and they are eating everything, getting hit by cars pretty much nightly, etc. Oh, and then there's the Lyme disease being spread by the deer ticks. So, I'm not the biggest fan of deer right now.) Even though we've since put up a barricade while the fence company orders the materials to rebuild that section of fence, the deer have discovered they can indeed *jump* our fence, or in a couple of cases crash right through it, breaking the bars. Crazy.

Well, our backyard has been a lush ground of oakleaf hydrangeas and hostas ever since we bought this house eight years ago, but no more. The &*$#@ deer have eaten every leaf they can reach off the hydrangeas, and the hostas are mere stalks now. It looks awful. My consolation is that at least now summer is nearly over, the pool is covered, and we're not spending as much time outside to see the carnage.

Sigh. I guess next year we'll be looking at planting more nandina, maybe some viburnum and something else that the deer seem to be ignoring for now in our front yard. But every time someone tells us, "Oh, deer won't eat that" we discover that if they're hungry enough, they will.

Carla, your garden looks amazing already. I can only imagine what you'll do to it when you really get your hands on it. The herbs are lovely!

Our garden is still a blank canvas. The building company still needs to plant the hedges, then I'll know exactly what space is left available to be creative.

The garden itself is very small, so we have to be very careful in planning what will go where and for that we'll have the whole winter. What I do know is I want to have a lot of herbs, I want to bring my lilac tree from a friend who's looking after it for me and I'd like to squeeze lavender somewhere too. The rest that I can manage will all be a bonus.

But, I'm happy to report our grass looks immaculate. We have prepared the soil and laid out the rolls one week in July, in a real community event involving all the neighbours when we worked together and helped each other. During the following hot weeks we watered the new grass regularly, some times it was an excuse for my son to get refreshed in a very original way

Your garden still looks lovely Carla! We still have a few flowers and shrubs doing well too. I'll try to get some photos as soon as our misty rain stops and I'll pop back to this thread.

It has been a while since a a garden post thread was started, and for that I apologize. With fall just around the corner, I do imagine gardens are putting on their last show, vegetables and fruits are being harvested, and trees are trading in their green uniforms for showier finery!

The herb pots I planted 2 months ago filled in quickly, and even though I having been culling for cooking, they still look pretty good. The basil is done, though DH managed enough for a small batch of pesto. I've been working in the garden I acquired with the new house, but it has been mostly removing winter killed shrubs, deadheading, and weeding.

The ravine view from the deck is still green. In the left hand corner you can see a bit of the dark blue that is Lake Ontario.

So how has your garden fared this summer? Please post pics of your garden, your balcony pots, a borrowed view, a spot of natural beauty you pass by during your daily routine, and any friendly creatures.
