Since the dinner was at your aunt's house, I would take my cue from how she and her immediately family dresses for the occasion and maybe up it one-half notch as a sign of respect for the hostess. Since it was An Occasion, I would not wear blue jeans; colored jeans would be okay. Where we go, they are very casual, but if my daughter were dressed this way, I would ask her to honor the occasion not look so everyday.

I think the proportions are a bit off. The low rise lengthens the torso and the wide contrast belt widens the hip. Probably not the best but for a family dinner, casual usually reigns.

You are lucky to live somewhere warm enough that you don't need boots. Ugg

Well I am in Australia so we don't have Thanksgiving. I think it all depends on what the norm is for your family re how dressed up you need to be. I like your outfit. It skews more casual, but it's still nicely put together and you look good.

Kate, maybe check in with Inge regarding your other thread. I don't know what happened as it's morning here and I don't know what happened over night.

Your jeans have rips in them which takes them into the too casual zone. It's silly because you may have dropped good $ on those jeans to get the rips just so. But dress codes are silly like that.

Otherwise the Shiny Thanksgiving rule of thumb is that if you're the cook you can wear whatever the heck you want. If you aren't the cook, you have to show up dressed nicer than the cook. You can dress +1 if you contributed a main dish, +2 if you brought a side dish +3 if you brought a dessert, +4 if you brought alcohol, +5 if you brought nothing but yourself, +6 (now we're talking black tie) if you brought nothing but a BF who doesn't wear shoes. Subtract if he proposed at dinner!

I'm curious about what looks like a Playboy bunny belt buckle in your photo. That part might throw me off at a family dinner. But as far as casual vs dressed up? Every family is different, and I say go with what works best for you and takes into consideration your host. I think it shows respect to dress up a bit when invited out for dinner - but I know family is sometimes exempt from that:)

I think you look great ! Jeans look nice especially when paired with a nice top like you show here. My thought when dressing to be with family/friends is to dress like you care. Simple as that. I wouldn't want to be seen in something I would throw on when cleaning out my garage in or working in the garden. But I do like to look like I thought about what I wanted to wear.

Sisters are funny-- my sister and I tease each other sometimes about what we are wearing but it's all in fun. When someone insults the way you are dressed, just come back with a compliment about how they are dressed.

It is such a personal thing. Our family always dresses a little bit nicer on festive occasions, and it would be seen as disrespectful to wear something so casual. But other families have different traditions, so no one can say with certainty whether something is "right" or "wrong" because it depends on the family, the expectations and the circumstances.

This is neat casual....an everyday sort of look. In my world, Australian people generally make more of an effort to dress up for festive occasions. After reading Angie's recent post on dressing for festivities, I've noted that Americans generally seem more casual when it comes to festivities. Personally, I think if you have nicer dressier clothes, festivities are the time to wear them. At the same time, we have the right to be individuals, and if you felt good and appropriate wearing these clothes, who has the right to question your taste? You definitely look neat enough.

Many families dress up a bit more for this important family dinner. A dress or skirt outfit or slacks that are not jeans may be what your sister is talking about. Even dressy shoes like heels with a great pair of jeans and dressy top would give you a more festive look.

To me, Thanksgiving is a casual-dress holiday meant to be spent at home... Well except for a walk outside to see the leaves and some mud football. So I think you're dressed fine.

I will say I'd be cold, but I think 72 F is cold. And also my family is all turtleneck under button down and slacks, but you have to understand they think they're being casual.

Does your family as a whole dress a little more? Is everyone in slacks or something?

I think it depends on where you celebrated (at home? A relative's house?) and who you celebrated with. I think you look fine if everyone around you is casually dressed.

Feeling a little cynical so excuse me when I say that sometimes family just likes to tear us down... In past years, has your family dressed up and you beat to your own drum? Or is casual normal and sister just was in a disapproving mood? I would take it lightly.. Would you say what she said to her or others?
