Thank you, everyone, so much! You're all so wise. Angie has spoken and she's *never* led me wrong, so this will stay. The thought of walking around grey Vancouver in a bright red raincoat makse me smile, especially since brights are not normally part of my closet. Hopefully some nice boots and a scarf will go a long ways towards de-gearifying the overall look. Hanging on to this will give me the leeway to add a more stylish but possibly less waterproof trench if I find one, for those times when it may be rainy but I won't actually be slogging through downpours for upwards of half an hour--dates, shopping, etc.

Rae, yes, the price is completely acceptable for a necessary semi-stopgap item; I'm lucky to live in a place where I can walk to all my kids' activities (swimming, soccer, and dance--remind me to only do two of those next semester, whew) and the price per wear will be pennies by the time the summer rolls around. The gas and parking savings alone, if I were driving them to all those things, will more than outweigh the cost of the coat.

OK, I'm going to vote KEEP here for a couple of reasons. While this coat is probably not your perfect raincoat, I can see it as a very useful piece because it is waterproof, BREATHABLE, and has a hood. The red color is a nice bonus in a sea of greys, navies, and blacks. As for the size, the sleeves do look a bit longish, but that can be easily fixed-- and even might be an advantage if you need to layer a sweater underneath. I'd also be a bit concerned that the back pleat might not look as good if you sized down.

Some of the other coats that have been linked to are only water resistant, not waterproof; don't have hoods; and, if waterproof, have comments indicating the coat is not breathable. The reduced price on this one is also nice, especially if you think you might want to keep looking for that elusive PERFECT coat once you've reached your weight goal. At least you'd stay dry and warm until you found it!

I don't think this one is too gearish at all, though I have a high tolerance for gear. Is the price too high for you to use this as a stop-gap while you search for your perfect ink blue/purple coat? It sounds like you need one ASAP.

The MK is nice looking, but I would hesitate with that one because it seems much shorter than the other and would leave most of your legs to get wet.

Living in rainy Scotland, I understand your need for rainwear and a hood! I quite like the jacket, it doesn't look 'gear' to me and the colour is bright and cheery (plus your kid will be able to find you easier in a sea of dark colours!) It does look a bit big, but I don't think it's too bad esp if you will wear bulky sweaters under it.

The MK is lovely! The Weather Edge Girl on the Go from Eddie Bauer isn't setting the fashion world on fire, but it comes in eggplant. I was checking it out on my last shopping trip to the states. Don't know if they ship to Canada.

I found a waxed cotton knee length jacket with a hood at TJ Maxx years ago, and I spray it with niqwax every year. I don't know what I'll do when it goes.

I have this one:

http://www.bluefly.com/vince-c....._Outerwear

I bought it at Macy's a couple of years ago at a similar price. It works great for me except for when it's raining sideways. I don't even carry an umbrella with it usually. I have it in a large, and it's longer on me than it is on the model, which is weird, because I'm 5'10".

I like the look of that KORS one, too!

Suz, you get me, you really get me (or at least my issues, heh). I will be over the moon if Angie finds some good rain coats with hoods this year!

You're right, I do need this coat. It's not available in a size down in this color or price--the red was a clearance option that only was available in L. I could get it in black or plum for $159. I may try it even though the price is higher. My other MEC jacket (a short rain jacket) is a size M and it fits. This is an L. I need to try it with a fleece layered underneath first, though. I will have to wear it that way some of the time for sure.

I do do the US address thing on occasion, shipping items to Point Roberts, but right now it's tough to make the trip because of baby #2's naps. Actually, come to think of it, I can't enter the US with #2 anyway. We can't get a birth certificate or passport for her and won't be able to get one until her adoption is finalized. It'll be 4-6 months unti either of those things changes. Weekends and evenings are basically never free.

My biggest problem, really, is I just don't have time to shop thoroughly. I can't really shop at all with the kids during the day, weekends are packed, and evenings are delegated for homework, writing, and housework. I can steal away once every couple of weeks for an hour or two, but that's it. Makes it tough to properly scour all the retail options. I just have to do the best I can with what I can find when I can find it. And, indeed, maybe try to get to Nordstrom's a couple of times a year... if only I could hire Angie to do it with me (maybe if I manage to make my weight loss goal--now that would be a reward!).

I. TOTALLY. hear. you.

When I lived in Van, this was my constant constant struggle and search.

You NEED this coat. I would try a size down just in case it fits better. But you need to buy this now as your stopgap, so you can continue the search feeling at least protected from the elements and a little bit cheerful.

This one is a good colour, looks less gearish than some, and a scarf at the neckline will disguise the grey stuff. The price is right, and you don't have time to be too fussy. Go for it.

Meanwhile, pay attention to Angie's store. Living in Seattle, she has the same needs as you for rain protective clothing, and sometimes recommends good options.

Re: ordering from Nordstroms. I know it is a hassle. But you're only about an hour from the border. It might make sense to see if you can get a My US Address (or similar), have things shipped there, pick them up, and return for free from the US if they do not work.

Either that, or a bi-yearly shopping trip to Nordstroms!

Thanks for the links! I love the Overstock LF one but it's out of stock. Soia & Kyo fits too tight through the arms for my broad shoulders and muscular "mom arms" I'm in Canada so Nordstrom is pretty much a no-go since the chance of having to return any coat due to fit is high. I'll keep an eye out for the Patagonia one in stores but I don't know that it'd be any less "gear" than the MEC one (possibly a better fit, though).

I've had no luck thrifting (I think most poeple here wear raincoats 'til they die) and I'm scared of ebay because I have such trouble fitting outerwear.

I go through this search every year and always end up frustrated. Grrr! I need to go down to Seattle.

I'm totally fine with it, though it looks big in the sleeves. f it rains all the time, you need a real raincoat.

I half love it, half hate it. The hate is mostly for the gear-y aspects: the plasticky hood lining and grey polar fleece at the collar. And the fact that what I really want (but can't find, so far) is a classic trench in eggplant or olive or ink blue, with a hood and waterproof fabric.

I'll have to try it on again to see if is, in fact, too big. I don't think it is, especially at the shoulders. And I will wear layers under it.

Elle, I will keep looking, but it's tough! The hood + waterproof combo is rare. Even Land's End's rain trench is hoodless (makes no sense to me), and I could need something as soon as this week. I do have one more trip downtown scheduled for Friday, but after that, I'm stuck.

It's not as gear as some & will work for a lot of occasions. If you want a trench with a hood in the same price range though you will find one. I found a black rainproof DKNY trench, without a hood but I wasn't looking for one, in season a couple of winters ago, for $99 with everyday value at Macy's. The same one was $299 at Bloomingdales so shop around.

It looks a little big - will you be wearing more layers under it? I like the colour & think it will go with any neutral. How do you feel in it; leaving aside the desperate need for a coat?

I cannot overemphasize how desperately I need a rain trench with a hood! It rains here all fall, winter and spring, and I'll need to go out in it one to two times per day to walk my kids to classes, playgrounds, etc. I'll need both hands to push my heavy stroller so the hood is a must--I can't carry an umbrella. I used to have a Michael Kors eggplant rain trench but it didn't stand the test of time, and now I have a gaping wardrobe hole that will leave me housebound if I can't fill it (not an option). I was hoping to find something that basically functioned as gear without actually being gear, but it's no small task.

All that to say, is this coat hopelessly "gear"? It's from MEC and was on sale for $89, which is a steal. It's Gore-Tex, though, and when it's not fastened all the way the ugly grey fleece that lines the neck/collar shows, as does the plasticky interior of the hood (it's white but looks pale pink in the photos). I'm also unsure of the colour on me. It's a very bright tomato red, a bit warmer and brighter than it appears in the pics. Does it flatter? Will I get sick of it? Can I wear it with chocolate brown or cognac boots?

I'm open to alternative trench suggestions (must be trench length, mid-thigh or longer, or my legs will be soaked from the rain running off the front of the coat)! I'm in Canada.
