It seems like someone who is struggling with body image will potentially fixate on numbers in an unhealthy way, whether those numbers are multiple zeroes or invented sizing by the particular brand. In regards to body positivity, criticism of the sizing labels is more reactionary (this sizing is a problem!) than preventative (body positive/ healthy role models/ mental health normalization). This thread has reminded me of the importance of body positivity within the circles that each of us can influence.

Gravitas uses a sizing system that is not apparently ordered from one end of the size spectrum to another. I would order more from them as I like their designs but the poly content is quite high.

Sizing does seem to involve a lot of game-playing, doesn't it.

Some brands dodge it by making up a unique-to-them system. Chico's has done this, and I think James Perse tee shirts come as size "1,2,3,4".

Isn't the arbitrary number game precisely because we don't want to see / know the measurements? I remember the awful feeling in junior high when my inseam length and bum width was printed on the visible label of my Levi's Jean's. I had the biggest number of everyone.

To answer April’s question : worrying . Yes to size inclusion at both ends of the scale but using multiples of 0’s are meaningless and can feed into dangerous psychological territory for many people . I’m all for using waist sizing numbers -can’t pretend to have the answer for the 2,4,6 sizing system though .

Janet, sounds like your issue is with April for starting the thread and for later introducing the idea of cultural influences that I was responding to. Carry on discussing with her, but please don’t misquote me in your conversation.

I totally missed the post you are referring to, and am truly sorry you experienced that. Whatever that person said, I’m over here (probably not alone) thinking you look great, and that things you want to hide are assets to highlight. But you know that already.

FI, I would simply resist the urge to comment on people’s size at all, even under the guise of “culture.” I celebrate any move from designers or retailers to fit a wider variety of bodies. Period.

I am personally trying to move away from body comparison and talk of size/weight, as it tends to be unproductive and possibly hurtful. As someone who was on the receiving end of a recent body comparison here on YLF (which made me feel like the before in a “before and after” ad), I urge people to keep the conversation to style, not bodies.

Janet, hm, I suppose a person would have to slow down and notice that I specifically said those can be fine for individuals. It’s when a culture pushes us all toward whatever end of the spectrum that’s problematic. What’s right for one isn’t necessarily right for us all. I get that people here aren’t academics, but it is a written forum, so I think we should all have a basic level of respect to read each other’s words honestly and not try to create new meanings for them.

I’ve resisted speaking to this until now, but I want to state for the record that there are comments in this conversation I find troublesome. Angie has cultivated a body-positive environment in this forum, and I would hate to think that anyone with any waist size would feel shamed for their body. I would encourage anyone to think about how someone would feel reading this who has a 22” waist, or a 40” one. Let’s keep body judgments out of YLF, please.

A culture that pushes most women to have a 22” waist? I’d worry about that just as much as a culture that pushes most women to have a 40” waist. Individual variation between those (roughly) is normal and healthy.

Chiming in to JNZ and shevia -- I used to work in a school that served a population from one cultural group where many of the female teachers were almost preternaturally tiny about the waist/hips.

I did used to wonder where they were getting their professional clothing.

And yes, sizing is now insanely all over the place. My closet ranges from XXXS to XL and they all fit pretty much the same. Go figure.

I think it's a good thing. While not super common, some full grown women are just very petite. I work with a woman who is in her late twenties but gets mistaken for a child quite often because she's very tiny all around. It's very difficult for her to find clothes that fit that aren't childish. So i think having "adult" clothes is smaller sizes is not a bad thing. Granted something like pants don't make as much of a difference, but still.

Ugh, I just feel compelled to add that if there hadn't been such tremendous size inflation over the last two decades, no one would need a 0000. I am wearing the same number size I wore in college, and I am nowhere near the same physical size. But once size inflation has occurred, it can never be reined in again, so here we are.

I see it as inclusive. Not only do I know people who are tall and willowy in adulthood, but I work with students who often grow UP before "filling out." It makes it all but impossible for them to find things long enough but still small enough in the middle.

I have an adult niece who would probably wear this size and would be happy with the expansion of size ranges toward the smaller end of the spectrum. As to the worrisome part, I think ads are more visible and influential. To me, the key is featuring models of many sizes--rather than displaying only the thinnest sizes--while offering clothes that fit them all well.

Pre pandemic, while GAP were moving to an online model in America the company were actively investing in Asia where the average size is more petite. Perhaps this accounts for the smaller size?

I think vanity sizing also plays into this a bit. 22 inch waist is small but not unheard of, especially as others have mentioned in junior sizes. It’s just that it used to be a size 0, and now it’s 0000.

Editing to add: when I was a teenager in the 90’s I remember my best friend, who was tiny - I don’t know what her waist size was but i wouldn’t be surprised if it was 22 - being super happy that one of the juniors stores In the mall had started carrying her size, which iirc was a 0 at that time.

There are really tiny ladies that aren't interested in shopping kids departments - it could work for them. I remember very petit lady asking me "What do we have in size 00P in our store?" - "Nothing". I recommended BR or J.Crew stores.

I “graduated “ from size 00 to 0 in Gap pants in about 2008, that was my size for 10 previous years. Some of their styles were generously cut and in mid rise. I sure was happy to buy from them instead of “young adults” kind of stores.

Agree completely about the younger audience.

Additionally, Gap brands also are offering a LOT of options in petite sizing these days - all of the Gap brands - Banana Republic, Old Navy and of course Athleta has long done so for most of their bottoms. (These brands haven’t been on my radar for a while, so maybe this change isn’t as recent as I perceive?). But it seems a stark change from a few years ago.

So it appears they are experimenting with expanding their definition of inclusive sizing in multiple ways beyond plus sizing. I am very pleased about it and have been doing my small part to send a supportive message with my $.

I’m reading this discussion about petite sizing with interest. I wear petites and find I am sized out of most adult retailers. I’m sitting here right now in a size 14 girls Athleta sweater lol.
