OMG, great tips from all of you, thank you!

I had not considered the front v. profile shape issue at all, which is a very useful tip from Liz.

Smittie, my hips and shoulders are about the same, so I'm running with a rectangular hourglass.

Staysfit, I like your idea of trying the looks to see which suits, and ascertaining body type from there. That's the most important part anyhow

Keep in mind that measurements go around your body, while body shape labels are usually about how the outline of your body looks when seen straight-on from the front.

So, you might have a full, round bottom when viewed from the side, but relatively narrow hips when viewed from the front. Your measurement will reflect the roundness of your body, but your front-on view will not.

That's why all this stuff is only general guidelines. Pick and choose what's useful.
(As a side note, I have noticed that on the forum many women who are rectangles thought they were pears. My guess is that because they do have some curve on their hips / bottom, compared to the rest of their body, it seems to them like they are pears.)

I think you're just curvy enough to be an hourglass and just straight enough to be a rectangle.
I'm wondering: what do you look like straight on? Do your shoulders appear wider than your hips? Or about the same? If they're about the same, I'd say you were a straight hourglass.

I think body type can be confusing. Angie told me I'm a rectangle, but my shoulders are clearly broader than my hips. I also have a relatively small waist and am fairly balanced, but probably not curvy enough to be an hourglass. My legs are very muscular and powerful, my rise is long and my legs relatively short, making my hips look prominent enough that I thought for a long time that I could be a pear shape.

I suggest reading Angie's descriptions for the body types that come closest to what you think you are and then try out the silhouettes and see how they look. I have borrowed from both the inverted triangle and rectangle shape descriptors to figure out my favorites.

Thanks Cat! Yes, I am perhaps more of a rectangle, though a curvy one. Of course my rules apply only to myself - I do not take issue with the brow choices of others

Well, people seem to come in all shapes and sizes these days.

When looking at your measurements, I don't envision a pear at all, but rather a rectangle.

By the way, welcome to the forum, and thank you for providing info in your profile! Fun statements about things you have decided. I disagree about the eyebrows, though. You need not look perfect all the time.

Thanks Janet. Also, I hope that scoliosis does not cause you too much pain. I am recovering from spine surgery right now, ugh.

Many of us don't fit neatly into one body shape category. I'm quite literally an hourglass and pear (due to scoliosis, my body is quite asymmetric and my shoulder and hip line up on one side, while on the other side, my hip appears slightly wider than my shoulder line). So it's very possible you have aspects of both types!

I just measured and looked at myslef and reread the various body type descriptions, and I just don't know. Help?

I am 5 foot 2 and have the following measurements:

Shoulders - 40
Bust - 36 A
Waist - 32
Dat booty (hips) - 39

I build and maintain muscle easily, but have my share of fatty goodness, as well. I have a waist but it's not super curvy and seems to get less so when I lose weight. I'm small busted but mot boyishly so.

I will post a photo when I have achieved full status :)

Thanks in advance, and have a fabulous day!
