It could be a fit issue, but it could also simply be the band itself. I am relatively small, but have always found the band uncomfortable. It's not an issue of bra size, as I've been fitted by capable SAs in both Montreal and New York. The bulk of the support should come from the band, but the band must be tight enough to remain in place if you raise your arms. That minimal tightness will always be uncomfortable for me. If the band ends up being the problem for you (rather than particular models or cup sizes) consider long-line bras. The long-line band's greater surface area will reduce the pressure on particular spots.

I'm sorry you are struggling with your bras. Were you fitted by the manager in the lingerie dept? If not - call Mary at the Nordstrom Flagship and speak to her about your bra challenges.

Soma is another way to go.

Also, Bare Necessities has good bra specialists who may be able to help.

The most comfortable bra I've ever worn is from Soma. It is billed to eliminate back bulge, and closes in the front. I've got to admit it's not the most lifting bra I've ever owned, but I don't want to rip it off when I walk in the door at night, so I figure it's a good option. It's also a 38DD, instead of the 40 or 42D I've been wearing for the past several years.

I keep going back to this one :
Chantelle Rive Gauche
For me it is the three part construction, shorter underwires and smaller band but larger cup sizes that makes it perfect.

I did a quick hit and run with my reply yesterday, but yes there is a HG of bras for you out there. I went to a specialty loungerie store in my area where i was measured again after having this done several years prior. Even though some of the bras seemed fine at first, they ended up being too tight, the straps kept slipping off, etc. Then I tried on the Wacoal Awareness bra and it was and is the most comfortable bra I have ever worn.

Try the website http://www.herroom.com . They have a very detailed questionnaire that helps you pinpoint the type and style of bra that would work best for you. I completed the questionnaire after I bought my Awareness bra and the results of the questionnaire were spot on and recommended the Wacoal Awareness bra.

Regarding the reddit subredit: yes, it's a forum. The beginner's guide is the place to start: https://www.reddit.com/r/ABraT.....ners_guide. Lots of useful information there, even if you don't want to post on the forum itself.

All bras leave temporary red marks from the band--like any other elastic on skin (I get the same thing from the elastic in my socks). It's not a sign that a band is too tight. Having the underwire feel like it's stabbing does indicate that something about the size/shape of the cups is off, though. A bra that fits shouldn't hurt. I second everything that Gaylene has said on this point.

I don't think Nordies is the end all be all of bra fittings. Plus at least in the Seattle flagship I've seen a decrease in variety. Plus they still will have a tendency to fit you into existing stock. I lucked out though because my sales associate was trained at Neiman Marcus.
Anyways if you have a specialty lingerie store near you, try there. They're more likely to have more obscure brands that might fit better.
Also this is in New York City, but everything I've heard is that they're the best out there. Maybe you can call them & they can help you remotely.

Wanting to take off your bra as soon as you get home or being stabbed in the underarm is a clear indication that you are not wearing the right bra FOR YOU, regardless of what a fitter says.

Finding the right bra isn't easy--much like finding the perfect pair of jeans. What works for one person can be way off for another because our shapes and preferences vary so widely. A good fitter can guide you to sizes and styles that might work, but only you can judge how a bra actually feels when it's on your body. Cup design and seaming; underwire length, gauge and shape; gore attachment and shape; fabrics and linings; strap placement; and band construction are just as important as size when it comes to comfort.

My suggestion would be to have a fitting at several bra boutiques before purchasing another bra. Trying on a wide assortment of styles and brands at a variety of pricepoints is the only way you can identify the features and styles that work best for you. A good fitter will understand why you want to do this before buying another bra. Most shops only carry half a dozen brands--and it's entirely possible that the best bra for you just doesn't exist in their selection.

And, can I say, it's important to let go of any prejudices you might have picked up because of previous bad experiences. Not all lace is scratchy, molded cups are not always preferable to seamed cups even under thin knits, demi/balconnette styles are not just for the young and slender, and a bra on sale is not always a bargain. My holy grail of a bra that I found in my mid-fifties is a lacey balconnette, seamed cup, underwire that looks like a wisp of fabric but shapes and supports my breasts while being so comfortable I could wear it for 24 hours without being aware I've got it on. It's a pricey European brand, but it is still holding up nicely after three years of 2-3x a week usage.

So, to answer your question, yes, there is a comfortable, supportive bra out there, but you've have to spend some time and effort finding it. Use a fitter, but trust your own judgement and don't be willing to settle. You, and not the fitter, get to make the decision about which bra is the perfect one for you.

No offense at all taken with the mention of breast reduction...prob. tho not an option for me. I briefly looked at reddit.com but not sure I exactly "get it" how it works/would be of help. It looks like a forum where people ask questions and receive answers from others on forum?

Elly, that is what I have been told, that the "tightness" will go away once I wear it for awhile but that never seems to happen, even in old bras. I have had bra fittings at Nordstroms several time over the years and that is when I said I leave, thinking this one...this one is 'IT" but ends up pretty much like every other one. Maybe my idea of comfort just isn't realistic? I don't want to be stabbed under the arm with the wires/I don't want a red line left on my skin where the bra hits (of course it goes away but that shows how tight it is fitting right?)

I find that a properly fitted bra won't be painful but usually give me that "I can't wait to get home and take this off" feeling by the end of the day for the first week or two--- after that I get about a year out of it.

I second the recommendation to check out

https://www.reddit.com/r/ABraThatFits/. Some bra fitters are knowledgeable about fitting, but many are not (even at Nordstrom and specialty salons), so it's helpful to educate yourself. Another thing to keep in mind is that bands will feel too tight if the cup size is too small, so you might want to try going up in cup size.

With regards to the hives, any chance you're allergic to one or more materials in some elastics?

btw don't be offended by my original post (about breast reduction); I only mention it because I know two women who struggled with pain due to breast size, and after they had surgery, the problems disappeared.

If you like your breasts and don't want surgery, why don't you try going to a professional bra salon and have them measure you, then try on anything they bring you? These kinds of places have specialty sizes and I've heard more than one story about how wonderful it is to get a professional bra fitting, which leads you to the right-sized bra. However, brands that make specialty sizes don't tend to be cheap.

I am very big busted and have such a difficult time with bras. I also ocassionally suffer from hives if anything around pressure points, i.e. bra band is too tight. Is there such a thing as a comfortable bra that also provide support? I feel like my only option for support is a tight band which is so uncomfortable. I have been fitted at Nordstroms and I leave thinking "ok this will work" and then I get home and cannot wait to take it off.
