My denim jacket is about 20 years old. It is a regular denim jacket style that Mavi still makes. It is on the boxy side but it works well.
I am looking for another one that is more tailored and faded denim. I think both are great.

Thanks everyone. Good insights.

Inge, good point. I popped mine on last night for dinner out when I realized that my husband was wearing jeans. Always perfect to dress things down. I was wearing the skirt below.

Christina, The cropped fits nicely but I did like the boxy version too.

Krishnidoux, good point about the full sleeves.

jlpp, thanks for the idea of holding onto the older ones. My blue JCrew denim jacket is at least 4 years old, maybe older.

Juniper, I like the Talbots one you mentioned. The fabrication is different from J.Crew so I would probably like it better.

I have two white denim jackets, both from Gap. I was thinking the other day that I purchased one in 2010, when I was on vacation in LA and it was surprisingly cold, and the other in 2013. I wear them all the time (which is why I duplicated; one is a size XL and gets worn over things with sleeves; the other, an L, gets worn over sleeveless tops. I never fully bare my arms.) The fit is more like the Talbot's jacket featured above -- slightly fitted. My mother had a jacket like that, and she loved it. In fact, I chose it for her burial outfit when she died in January. She was 86 but still interested in fashion. I bought a blush denim jacket at Target earlier this year. It's more fitted and I am wearing it a lot this spring. I veer toward classic cuts and fits. I would be leery of super boxy or cropped jackets as they feel short term.

I've seen all different cuts recently. I think you can just choose what you want. I have one that's a regular length and I'm looking for a cropped, slightly boxy one to go with my higher rise pants. I'm also intrigued by the minor trend of long (below hip) denim jackets too.

My mom gifted me a Talbot's white denim jacket after I told her I was on the hunt for one, and I'm quite pleased with the cut. I'm wearing mine today!

I like, own and use both styles. I think they serve different purposes much like different washes can. I tend to update denim jackets but also hold onto older ones forever.

If the close-fitting and/or cropped styles fit you better, then go for that. Don't buy the boxy cut and then discover next year it was a fad. Especially if you aren't comfortable in it.
My guess is that the boxy style is there to accomodate this summer's trendy larger sleeves and roomier cuts. But not everything in your closet has large sleeves

!
If it makes you feel any better, I too bought a jean jacket earlier this spring: it is a darker wash (indigo), tight fitting with spandex and stops at the waist. I have been wearing it over and over. It is very useful, as another trend this summer is max bottoms (loose, wide pants and max skirts); in this regard, the narrower jacket offers structure and balance.

I always have better luck getting denim jackets from something like eBay, FWIW.

Ah, I think the more tailored (cropped or a bit longer) are classics that will never go out of style. Other silhouettes, like the boxy ones you mention here, are more like trend pieces. Fun to mix it up.

(Also, the boxier styles have been gaining momentum for a few seasons I believe, and I'm guessing, might stick around for a few more at least.)

I have been looking for a white denim jacket. I purchased one from J.Crew, but it was rather stiff. (uncomfortable). As I was looking around the mall, I noticed both Madewell and Gap were showing rather boxy denim jacket styles. Is this a developing trend? I don't want to buy the close, cropped style and next summer find it is now out of style! Help!
