Not necessarily! I know my WH ratio is .75. I don't think it matters in terms of tucking, though. I'm still high and short-waisted (they usually seem to go together), so even if my waist was 22", I still wouldn't be able to tuck.

Steph, I don't think being busty in and of itself precludes the option to tuck. I think it's a combination of things. If you're busty and long-waisted it works out. Actually, a full bust can actually balance a long waist. But busty and short-waisted? Forget it. Like I said, at least one thing has to be true.

As to the question about skinnies, I have never been under the impression that everyone can wear them the exact same way. I still think pears and hourglasses with fuller hips should keep their tops at least to the crotch or mid-thigh, and balance it out with chunky shoes or boots.

I just don't think there are too many different ways to tuck. All you can do is change the position of the waistband and the type of shirt you're tucking.

It's the same with belting at the waist, which is another thing everyone seems to insist everyone can do. I don't agree at all, and actually, in my "real life" outside of YLF, I have had family members tell me flat out that belts look bad on me (family members who otherwise don't care or notice what I wear). I have to side with them 100%. Any kind of outfit that depends on or focuses on waist emphasis is not a look I embrace. I don't mind waist emphasis but it has to be subtle and secondary.

Angie, I do not tuck into skirts. I did a few times, but only into one skirt because it was a knit. Now I no longer wear skirts, and if I did, I still wouldn't tuck.

Count me in as another anti-tucker. As a short waisted, tummy problem-area apple with a waist:hip ratio > 0.95, tucking makes me look completely AWFUL!

By the same reckoning, are there some body types that should not wear skinny jeans? What about leggings? (And is there a consensus about this here?)

At first I think it was said, certain bodies shouldn't wear skinnies. Then, the look took off, and they started making the pants for all silhouettes. Now you see everyone sporting this look with all types of bodies!

I think new silhouettes take some getting used to before they are widely accepted.

I am completely with Maya's "bold statement" And even though, on a good day I have all three body features she mentioned as good for tucking, I am still not sure that tucking would look great on me.
I also agree with MNSara on the inconveniences of tucking. Similiar reasons pushed me towards bodysuits in the 90's!

I agree that tucking can look particularly bad when carrying a little weight in the midsection. When I gain weight it sometimes goes to my gut, and I absolutely can't wear anything tucked when that happens. I just don't think it looks attractive to have a stomach bulge when it could be easily hidden.

I am busty, however, and when I am not carrying extra weight and my belly is flat, I do think that I can tuck and it looks good, so I don't think busty is necessarily a deal-breaker (I am not short-waisted). But once that stomach pooches out, tucking is out of the question.

Hmm tucking, I keep trying too and it keeps looking "off" to my eye. I feel like it makes me look even more like a pear shape. And it's not kind to the midsection if you are not flat and smooth with your stomach. Maybe I need different jeans to pull off tucking but that's not a project I'm ready for just yet.

No tucking for me. Not with skirts. Not with pants. I am big busted, short-waisted, and have a mushy tummy. There's just nothing about tucking (or belts) that will work for me. I do think that it looks nice on many other people - genuinely, I like the look on others. As far as I'm concerned, for me, this whole tucking business just reinforces my desire to wear dresses.

Maya, Marianna and Kari - you've been tucking into pencil skirts which counts as tucking! So you *do* tuck

And no one needs to tuck into pants and trousers - your style will not suffer because of it. But if you like tucking and haven't done it for a while, I was there to replant the seed.

I'm with Maya and Marianna. I don't really have any body features that favor tucking shirts into pants. I can get away with tucking tops into pencil skirts if I *really* have the right pieces since the waistband of my skirts hits at my natural waist, but pants have a much lower waistline so the tucking just hits/emphasizes a muffin top or the widest part of my hips.
(There is a 13" distance from my natural waist to my crotch, so high waisted pants would *not* solve this problem by any means - the high waist wouldn't come up high enough unless the pants were serious "Mom Jeans".)

What a relief that I'm not alone! Angie, I'll have to try tucking into a couple of skirts and see if I like the look better.

I think part of the problem is my hip/waist/bust ratio. My hips are roughly 41 inches, my waist 33, and bust 36. If my boobs were bigger and waist smaller it might look a lot more normal. I do have a long waist, so I've got that covered. But my belly is no longer that fab looking, thanks to motherhood.

I asked Angie about tucking, and for short waisted, busty and short legged me- she advised me to look for a higher waisted, drapey fabric pant without pleats and to wear it belted. Of course, heels would look better with that. It's just too fussy and dressy of a look for me, so I will probably give it a pass.

April, I think Angie advises short-waisted body types to wear their jeans a little lower, but I don't see that as a solution unless you are just very slender and have 0% body fat around the midsection. If I wear either belts or waistbands slightly lower than my natural waist, they hit where I am widest and flabbiest. It's so unflattering I can't even tell you. If I were perfectly flat and toned through that area, it might work, but most people aren't.

Looking at Angie's most recent picture post, it proves my point exactly. Angie can get away with wearing her waistband a little further down on the waist, but how many people can really do that (with a clingy knit, no less)? I am hugely skeptical.

I agree with Maya and everyone else who said it's hard to tuck if you're short-waisted, the slightest bit busty, and/or carry your weight in your midsection. If you're merely short-waisted or busty, you might be able to tuck and then put a jacket or cardigan over the top, to smooth over the horizontal line that cuts you in two when you tuck. But if your belly is a problem area, it's not the most flattering look. (Look -- ahem -- at men. They either let the waistband ride below the belly, football-coach style, or they hike their pants up over the belly, old-man style. Either way, not so fab.)

I'm short-waisted, having about two inches between my rib cage and hipbones, so this is probably not a great look for me. Any illusion I can create of having a waist is pretty much shattered when I tuck in a shirt.

Body shape notwithstanding, I was SO thrilled 5+ years ago when tucking fell out of favor!

What a relief to not have the extra fabric taking waistband space, not to have shirts that come untucked with movement, not to struggle to tuck things in in the first place, not to ponder tightly tucked vs loosely tucked, etc.

I'm also in the short-waisted and busty camp, plus I'm only 5'1" so tucking only cuts me down further visually. The only tucking I can do is with quite fitted woven tops that stay in place, because there's nowhere for a bunch of gathered fabric to go. So tucking will be very rare for me, if it happens at all. I don't feel obligated.

I guess my eyes haven't adjusted either, because I agree with Maya. It's funny that I don't mind dropped waists on myself, but a lower waist pants with a tucked in top looks horrible to me.

Yes: Mine.

Certain features favor tucking, including a flattish midsection, a long waist, or small-average bust. I think you have to have at least one of those features in your favor to tuck. I have none of those qualities going for me, and even though I'm sure Angie thinks I can do it and look good...well, I heartily disagree. I don't even want to try this look. I have gotten pretty good over the course of my style evolution at knowing where to draw the line when something won't work for me. I knew belting didn't work, and I know tucking isn't going to work. I indulged some of the belt advocates last year by trying waist belts, and they are all closet orphans today. Not making the same mistake twice. Sometimes you should trust your instincts.

The only time I ever tuck is into a very specific skirt, and my wool shorts. The skirt is a ponte knit straight skirt from AT and somehow the drapey, forgiving material makes it ok if not great. Aside from that one skirt, I never tuck into skirts (I never really wear skirts to begin with). I tuck into my shorts but always ALWAYS layer something structured over my shirt so it doesn't show or isn't as obvious. As soon as that layer comes off it looks awful.

I'm also going to make a bold statement and say that the majority of people who have posted tucked pictures still look better when untucked. There are a few exceptions but I still think it's a much more flattering look for most people.

Oh, I disagree! I couldn't imagine anything worse than me in a tucked top! Not going to happen. Ever.

The devil is in the detail. I'm going with no. Tucking into skirts v.s. trousers is different though - some body types look better in one rather than the other.

I am with you on this one, Niki. I'm short-waisted and very sensitive to extra weight around my mid-section. I just don't think tucking is very flattering if it emphasizes love handles/muffin tops/etc. But I feel like I'm in a minority and maybe I'm being too critical of what I see as my body flaws (not something new to me!).

Good question, Niki - I am short waisted and I feel much better untucked! I am watching for input on this one

I ask because the look never seems to work on me. Or so I think, anyway.

Tucking my shirt in seems to emphasize my body shape in all the wrong places. Am I being needlessly resistant to change, or am I onto something?
