I don't think they're exactly interchangeable. The French gals I know all seem to like their high heels, for one thing.

It's true about the walking, Parsley. If you walk everywhere, you burn a lot more calories without really noticing that you're making an effort. I'm sure the smoking helps a little, because if you're smoking you're generally not putting anything else in your mouth, but that can't be all of it. My French sister-in-law and most of her friends are non-smokers, and they are pretty much all thin. Part of it is probably the fact that they tend not to each too much, and they're not shy about telling a friend that she's getting fat.

Vicki, I'm sure all the walking has a lot to do with it, too. I'm always amazed when we're in Paris at how much great food (and wine) we can enjoy without gaining an ounce. But we walk everywhere and that makes all the difference.

Good observations by everyone and nice list, Parsley. Let's hope they are svelte and and skinny, because they walk instead of smoke! I think it's time for me to do some "global traveling" to find out for sure what the difference is between Parisian Chic and Euro Chic! I think I'd be happy with both!

lyn, My DH has commented to me that what he's sees French women having for lunch is coffee and a cigarette. :-(
Not a recommended method to stay thin!

@ Parsley; I guess that's why they're so skinny. The smokes. Grr.

GP, we're on the same wavelength. I'm guessing Parisian Chic allows high heels while Euro Chic doesn't.

The thing to remember is that these are arbitrary labels that we are using to describe our perception of the collective style of a whole continent or city.

Just imagine if some European were trying to describe "American Chic" or New York Chic". Pretty difficult to characterize, isn't it?

That being said, I'll try to describe my take on Parisian Chic, since I spend a lot of time there. I can't speak for all of Europe!

I would use many of the same descriptions that nancylee used in her post.

Neutrals: beige, brown, camel, black
Solid colors, very few patterns, but great attention to detail and interesting style elements
LOTS of scarves, tied all sorts of ways, looking "effortless"
Hair is less perfect than in the US, often looking slightly messy, in an "artless" way
Meticulous skin care, subtle makeup.
Stylish Parisiennes tend to be quite slender
Lots of smoking (yuck!)
I have to disagree about no heels: I notice quite a mixture. Certainly for walking many women wear flats or low heels, but I see plenty of higher heels, particularly in the evenings.
Great handbags and boots

Just one person's observations.

I would guess that individual countries, and the cities within, will vary. Just as LA style varies from NY varies from Chicago or Austin.

Paris will be different from Amsterdam which differs from Barcelona which differs from Rome.

In fact Angie has some fascinating blogs where she writes about fashion in various cities in her world travels!

Search "global travel" in her blogs and you'll find the different cities-they are really interesting.

I think they have many elements in common, Natalie. One thing that comes to mind is that parisiennes probably lean a bit more towards neutral and darker colours (navy...)?

I would guess the Parisian Chic has a little bit more romance to it where as Euro Chic is a quite practical and modern.
