I would try the hardware store--when I took my boyfriend's leather messenger bag to the cobbler, he didn't have any replacement brass D-rings, so I had the cobbler measure the existing one (one had popped off and gone AWOL--hence the cobbler trip) and just went over a block to the hardware store and picked up two matching ones (they had brass and silvertone, and many many many different sizes), and he replaced both. It looks totally normal.

What other strap might work though? A chain strap could be nice but it doesn't sound like the most comfortable thing to have digging into my shoulder. Hmm. I was going to just look for two giant o-rings to attach somehow, but I'm having a surprisingly hard time finding them! I even checked Mood's website and all they have are wood rings. I'm not too familiar with the garment district (well, at least not in terms of actually shopping for textiles and notions and such).

I did discover that I could possibly have the peg moved and placed in a different location to add length, so I think that might be easier.

You should take a trip to the garment district in NYC. You might find a strap of sorts that could work instead of hardware.

Maya, I think that a fabric store would work, or any kind of craft store. The only problem with craft stores is that you will want to look at what the metal is actually made of, to be sure it won't turn green or anything like that.

I know, I know. I just think it's so weird that we have them to begin with. I love baking but pies aren't really my thing. I'm a cake gal through and through. Anyway, I'd rather not use beans to fill my bag. Somehow it just seems wrong.

I'm sure you get what you pay for with tailors. Now I'm more sure than ever. In theory I like the idea of getting clothes to fit you perfectly, but in practice it is just isn't practical unless you have the money and more importantly, the desire. I don't. On one hand I resent the fact that I have to pay hundreds of dollars for an investment piece and THEN have to get it altered, and yet on the other hand I feel ridiculous for spending a bucket of money getting an inexpensive dress tailored. To me there really isn't any situation in which I feel good about alterations other than extremely simple hems. I'm sure for a lot of the ladies on the forum who DO have money and consider their clothes to be investments, it makes sense, but that isn't me. the only reason I bother is because I always go into it thinking it will be much simpler than it usually ends up being.

I weighed my crossbody once I filled it up and it came to 10 pounds! Hopefully that will be enough to stretch it out a bit.

Hidden snaps = the greatest thing ever. I use them all the time. :)
Sadly to say I think tailors are a classic example of getting what you pay for. I've never found a real bargain in that department, but for me the competence and care make up for it to some degree.
And when in need of pie weights and none can be found, use dried beans. That's what I use when I'm blind baking my pie crusts and it works perfectly!

I don't know Michelle To be fair the lady who did my dress alterations did a superb job and was very sweet and professional, but she was just so hideously expensive. I appreciated the fact that she treated me with such care and importance, despite the fact that I was obviously not her typical upper east side client. It wasn't all bad, just the damn $100 bill.

FWIW, I brought my denim dress to the tailor I usually go to to get some hidden snap buttons in order to prevent the gaping and for $12 it worked out perfectly. I'm thinking of having that done with all my buttondowns from now on. I also had my cocktail dress from Beacon's Closet altered there (it was a bit big on top) and it came out well too. I guess my luck isn't always bad but it is at least half the time...

Oh well. Hopefully this pie weights thing will work. I always wondered why we had pie weights when no one in my house makes pie. Glad they finally came in handy for something...

That's an interesting thought Elpgal. I don't know if the hardware could be matched accurately though, but I'll keep it in mind.

I doused the strap in shoe stretch liquid, filled it up with pie weights and now have it hanging on my door knob! I'll see how that goes first. I read somewhere that leather can stretch anywhere from 5%-15% and that is probably all I need...

Maya, Can you take it back and see if they can add an extra ring or change out the hardware where the strap attaches to the bag so you can get a bit more length?

I love that blouse with the beads. SOOOOOO fab.

What is it with these alterations people, Maya? It's short but not too bad.

There isn't room for another hole, Steph, or I would have asked. I'm going to take my shoe stretching liquid and try to stretch it. Wacky but it just might work.

Maya, I think it looks like it *might* be a little short in the first photo, but it looks just fine in the second. But if *you* don't like it as is, is there anything that the tailor can do about it? Can they punch another hole in the strap so you can wear it a bit longer? It sounds like they messed up, so maybe you can take it back and see if they can make things right?
