I have no tolerance for wool. Merino feels great when I pet it in the store, but drives me mad if I try to wear it, even with an underlayer. Still, I find myself tempted by merino every time!

Merino is generally one of the softer wools, although as others have mentioned it does depend to some degree on the quality. Because it's softer though it does sometimes have a tendency to pill. (To a first approximation, shorter fibers = softer fabric, but shorter fibers also = more prone to pilling.)

Alpaca is indeed very soft, it feels a bit more silky to me than true wools like merino. It's also extremely warm. However, I have a weird sensitivity to it, where if I wear it touching my skin for more than a few minutes, especially if it's warm, it starts to feel prickly on my skin. Oddly, I can knit with it for hours without a problem.

I have very sensitive skin, but have never had any problem with merino wool. I'd say that if it's good quality merino, you shouldn't have any problems. I happen to think it's soft, but I don't know how soft you expect it to be.

I have no experience with alpaca. Is it itchy? I'd love to order some alpaca stuff if it's not, but I need a guarantee! Most wool makes me itch, even if it's a small percentage in a blended fabric.

Thanks.

RRae, that's interesting. Nope, alpaca is usually quite soft, especially baby alpaca. Angora is also soft, but can be irritating because the long fibers fly fee and get everywhere, including in your eyelashes (if you are me). As Caro said, think soft as butter to army blankets or horse blankets, all from the same animals. Belly hair that has never been cut? Soft as can be. Hair from the back that's been cut before? Rough.

Even I'm shocked by the variety I've seen. I've seen cashmere that is no better than common wool (not even merino) as everyone raced to create inexpensive cashmere sweaters a few years ago. I have an older, very nice cashmere sweater from Ann Taylor and it is nothing like the ones that I picked up at Ann Taylor just a few years later. All cashmere, but the older one was in the $200 range and the later ones were well under $100. They can't make it that much cheaper without cutting corners.

Yes, my hubby has a good merino wool sweater from Italy and it is very soft. I tried a much cheaper one on today, and it was a bit scratchy. So it can vary.

There are many 'grades" of merino from super-fine to rough & scratchy. Think Italian wool & silk suits to army blankets. So it depends.

If I had my way I would wear wool and nothing else in winter. The quality of the yarn and the weave make a big difference.

It shouldn't be itchy, but there are grades of merino just like there are grades of cashmere and of plain wool. Merino just means it comes from a merino sheep, which is a breed with softer wool. Low quality merino is going to be itchy, but super high quality merino would not be. Knitting has taught me a lot about the variety of wools out there. You want super luxury? Check out alpaca. I could bathe in the stuff.

Honestly, depends on your tolerance for wool. I think merino wool is soft to my hands, but it drives my chest skin, particularly around my collarbone, nuts.

I have fussy skin, though, so I usually choose to either not wear wool or always wear a shirt between my skin and the wool.

What Anna said, good merino shouldn't be itchy. I have a couple of 100% merino sweaters that feel lovely, though I do have a decent wool toleration. My husband likes both cashmere and merino, and won't really wear any other kind of sweater; he wears his with a layer underneath, though he likes to do that anyway.

Good merino wool isn't itchy. My new cream fisherman's sweater isn't the best, so it's a wee bit itchy. It's still much better overall than standard wool. Plus it's doesn't pill as much as cashmere.
I have a high tolerance for wool though. My father instilled in me that the only sweaterw sweater worth buying were wool.

There's a very cute sweater that's 100% merino wool, that I'd like to mention to DH would be a good Christmas gift for me.....I'm so subtle....but I want to make sure it's not going to be too itchy. Merino is the softer of the wools right? Anyone have a 100% merino sweater? How does it feel?
