Some of his lines may get more or less critical attention, but he is in a very powerful position and has enormous name recognition. When people write articles like this, they write what they want to be true, not necessarily what IS, and they demonstrate their own bias. What the article is talking about relates more to the economy in general and not specifically MJ or MBMJ.</p> <p>Personally, what bothers me is that he is supposedly designing for women, and yet ran men wearing women's clothing in magazines and used Andrej Pejic as the face of his spring 2011 campaign. I think the main critique is that he is increasingly derivative, e.g., "borrowing" from Prada and Commes des Garcon.</p> <p>For me, he jumped the shark maybe five years ago, when he debuted his Richard Prince-inspired nurse show, for Louis Vuitton. I was also put off by nude photos of himself promoting his men's cologne. Ick. I think his recent shows for Marc Jacobs and Louis Vuitton are costumey and derivative--to me it seems like he missed his calling as a costume designer for Broadway musicals :). </p> <p>This is just my two cents, of course! Every pair of premium jeans I ever had was from BC! I always found INA horribly overpriced, and never visited the third place the NYT mentions. So many things have changed since I was in NYC, sad to think BC is one of them. Guess that's progress. Sortof.</p> <p>Back to MJ. I don't really have much MJ except jackets, the rest don't work for my figure for some reason. But I do like the trim cut of his outerwear, especially when the cuffs have buttons up the elbow and funny linings. And I like his earlier bags in an ironic-whee-an-expired-it-bag kind of way. I always go to Beacon's Closet in Brooklyn when I visit NY and must say the prices and attitude have gotten a bit out of control. A few years ago I bought Bettye Muller oxfords, brand new, for $15. Last summer very scruffy looking shoes were being sold for $60. I did much better at the Goodwill, Housing Work type stores. I have also brought in clothes to Buffalo Xchange and find the clerks aren't always as knowledgeable as one might expect.
