The more complex alterations seem reasonably priced, but the basics like sleeve shortening and hemming seem way overpriced.

I also live in an expensive city, I thought $25 for shortening sleeves was pretty high here. The NY seamstress charges $50-80 for the same service.

Well apparently she is not available until mid-July...so there goes that thought...

But I guess when she gets back I'll give it a try.

Based on what I've paid in a small Wisconsin city for a top-notch seamstress to take in the waist of my designer jeans and alter a-line skirts, these prices are fair. Especially considering they come to you. I'd say give it a shot. If you're not making it to the tailor because of time issues and not wearing clothing because items need tailoring, it's most likely worth the price for the convenience.

I have a feeling I have read about this person in the New York Times not too long ago. They had an article on someone just like this--a seamstress who makes housecalls. Maybe do a search there?

Hmm, it does look pricey, but the convenience sounds amazing, and if she's gotten great reviews, that's fab too. Maybe prioritize a few pieces to have altered, just to see if you look her work (and it's not such a hit financially, all at once), then you could try to do a few pieces each month, as you budget allows?

I found this place while searching on Yelp for a tailor.

http://www.williamsburgseamster.com/

She is getting great reviews for what appear to be pretty complex alterations, but what really makes her operation unique is that she comes to you, both for the consultation as well as to drop off the finished garments. That would be brilliant. My biggest roadblock in terms of the pile of alterations I need done is that I never have time to go.

However, I have no idea if the prices here are reasonable (bearing in mind that I live in an expensive city). Most of the places I have gone to seem a lot cheaper, but at the same time, I have had many bad tailoring experiences. And I guess I am paying for the convenience as well.

The alterations I need are pretty simple, barring the cute dress in my other thread, although I can't decide how that affects things, if it does at all..
