I am much closer to Rachylou's thinking.

"I have been pondering Ralph Lauren’s philosophy of fashion... that it’s about the vision of a life and the clothes follow... maybe I’m just an 80s baby, but that seems right to me..."

My vision for the coming year started many months ago. Taking care of myself physically and mentally. That consists of losing weight, exercising regularly, healthy eating habits, taking time to breath, and most importantly, self-acceptance/love. The most beautiful clothes in the world can't hide a lack of selfconfidence.

Tomorrow, being the first of the year, I have an appointment to get my hair done. I haven't had a cut in almost a year, colored in probably close to 2 years. I'm getting a very short silver pixie with the main goal of maintaining it. There is something about the pixie cut that always makes me feel so.....I don't know......liberated and free?

Style/clothing goals:
1. Once I had kids, a husband, a home, pets......I put me aside and focused on solely on making sure they were taken care of. Now it's time for me again.
2. My style was and is an edgy boho. Over the last few years, I became worried about age appropriateness, trying to force myself into a more conservative box. It's like trying to stick a square peg into a round hole, it's never going to work. I need to embrace what feels natural and good to me. I need to be me, not try to model myself after a different middle aged woman on some blog.
3. Get up the courage to post WIW pics here.

I think my overall goal is to find my inner sparkle again, as mentioned in another thread. I used to have it, but lost it along the way.

ETA....Thanks for posting this thread. It really made me think.

So sorry about knee!
It may well be good tins for a style re- boot, unless you need to dig on your hands until brace comes off and you have a better idea of the more- normal YOU before making any large purchases . But can still do brainstorming, fashion boards, style goals. Including, did the knee episode tell you anything about where you’d like to head? For example, did the sneaker focus make you eager to get back to your previous shoes OR did it make you say, why am I not trying to wear really comfy shoes all the time?

Now that I've gotten my winter clothes out, many of them for the first time since 2010, I'm noticing that many of them are stolid, in solid colors. They aren't out of style per se, but I like pattern! Other things I like, but don't have the wardrobe support to do full-time are wearing tonally-matching colors, patterns, various textures, or other detailing, especially if it's unexpected or subtle (lurking quirk), and funky shoes. I've also slipped into somehow having more low heels than flats, which is not really who I am. So before buying this year I should ask:

Does it come in purple (pink/fushia/blackberry/cranberry/blush/cherry red/mulberry--all the berries!)? Deep indigo or cobalt (that's what fashion sites seem to call it, even though it is not the color of real cobalt) or periwinkle also works here.

Can I get it with pattern, texture, or both?
How funky is your chicken, how loose is your goose? Come on everybody, and get funky shoes! (Please tell me you're in the US and get the reference!)

Before any of that, though, comes Do I need it, or is there something similar in my wardrobe already?

ETA: Did you see Cindysmith's recent shoe post--lots of good-looking flats in there! Christina has also been knocking this one out of the park.

So sorry to hear about your knee and all the other broken bones on YLF.Here s hoping that 2019 brings better health to us all.
On the subject of style goals, mine are in no particular order
1 .wear what I have got more rather than chasing the new all the time.
2.To aid the above goal, get all my wardrobe onto my style app so that Ii can see what I have got .
3.To stick to a plan rather than buying randomly as I see things in Sales etc..I.e.to buy mindfully.
4To buy less stuff generally.l really feel that I have reached peak stuff and would like to stop accumulating it unles there is a good reason to do so.
5.When I do buy new clothes make sure that it’s something that I will really wear not a fantasy purchase, that it fits with my style goals and that I’m not just settling.ln other words unless it’s totally perfect DONT BUY IT.
I love Mainelady s list of things not to even look at I think that I might adopt that one as well.

I am so sorry about your knee cap and am wishing you speedy and complete healing and recovery.
My style goals are pretty straightforward. I have casualized my work wardrobe (which is still polished and on the dressier side compared to many of my peers). With a few key pieces and attention to accessories, quite a bit of my weekend wear now crosses over into work wear. I really no longer need a budget for clothes to wear to work...ahhh so pleasant, especially since I will be considering retirement within the next couple of years.
Moving forward my goals are to keep my happiness factors in the forefront of every decision I make: neutral and column of color base with a variety of toppers, accessories and jewelry. Brown, white and dresses will be worn more frequently.
My essentials are in very good shape, so my budget will likely be spent on shoes, booties, purses and scarves.
When I do have an opportunity to shop I will create a “Do not even look at ________” list and stick to it. I did that in 2018 and was very proud of myself and pleased with the outcomes.
While I am loving my gray hair, I am not as happy with allowing my skin and other body parts to age gracefully. I will continue to use quality skin care products and add a few facials to my routine. Keeping my happiness factors in mind, I am going to try to be less busy and fully enjoy the journey. Some would say that those goals are not style or fashion related, but I disagree. Happiness is the ultimate foundation for living a stylish life.

So sorry about your kneecap. It is never too early to start style resolutions. I have been working on mine after buying a pair of black jeans. I stayed away from black (mostly) for a long time but I am thinking of reintroducing black into my wardrobe. I want to put together a black jeans capsule.

This year I’m hoping to take a “Basics and Big Tickets” approach. I have a few big-ticket purchases I’d really like to make (winter boot refresh, waxed-cotton raincoat, possibly a wool overcoat). All are things that have been on my list for a year or more, but felt out of reach or got pushed aside by more pressing needs. Adding these big-ticket items means being really focused and not getting distracted by little “fun” purchases that eat into my budget. Or else, with some luck, finding just the right thing at the thrift store!

In addition to these big-ticket items, I know I have some “basics” categories that are in need of updating: pj shorts, underwear, knee socks. I haven’t replenished any of these in quite a while, which means it’s no longer possible to purchase direct replacements for what I have (discontinued styles), so I’ll have to factor some experimentation into my budget. I find this sort of basics shopping really annoying. I dislike the trial and error aspect; there’s really no way to know if socks and underwear will work out until you’ve worn and washed them. Lots of sunk costs.

Otherwise, nothing exciting on the horizon. I’m not aiming for any major style shifts. I have one “color formula” I’m trying to stick to (black/navy + white/cream + earth tone), but I’m also open to adding the right pastel/icy items, as well as reds/burgundies. Silhouette-wise, I’m still happy with a mixture of wide-legged, straight-legged and cropped bottoms, paired with fitted or cropped/boxy tops and a variety of both woven and knit toppers. I might also try to expand a bit on my tall boots + dresses + opaque tights/leggings capsule. I would love to find a new pair of tall boots (preferably warm and waterproof) and have not bought a winter dress in almost two years...

I have more of a shopping than style resolution this year.

The shopping diet that LaPed initiated in November was so good for me, and very illuminating. I need to carry that forward.

DH is retired now, and my job as a consultant means that “bench time” when I am not assigned to a client and drawing a paycheck is real.

We have plenty of savings, but those are not for my personal wardrobe expenses.

So, I am looking for style within my closet, keeping my style words front and foremost, replacing shabby as needed but not expanding my wardrobe, especially into “experimental” choices (I don’t have a good track record there.)

And I hope those who are healing do so quickly! And happy new year to us all!

Sorry to hear about your knee! Sounds painful.

I actually worked out a budget for my style resolutions last week.

My two overall goals:
(1) I want to add more feminine, classic pieces.
(2) I want to chic-ify my winter wardrobe. I always have such a hard time dressing chic in cold weather. I hate being cold, so I often put on my biggest, warmest coat & that ruins a look.

How I will do this:

(a) Address my "low-key" wardrobe. Reviewing some photos taken over the summer revealed I wasn't wearing the most flattering things when I was in 'relaxed mode.' I want to change that... I want to look good even when I'm just relaxing (outside the home).

(b) Buy one long sleeve, below knee winter weight dress, black.

(c) Buy nicer winter coats - I will probably do this winter. For me, the debate is which color. Black is the standard, but ... expected.

(d) Buy one nice, quality suit - in navy (blazer, sheath, skirt, wear-with-heels-length pant). Only one because I don't wear a suit for work. All the suits I already own are black or gray, so I figured navy would be a nice first venture into 'color.' Though I admit, it's basically a neutral. <---not really related to either of the two overall goals, but something I've been wanting to do for a while. This is just a tentative one.

So sorry, April. That could really put a damper on your sense of style! It wasn't long ago that I was on crutches and in a boot for three long painful months--so I can sort of relate. It's a great time to think about how you want your style to evolve. I've been doing bit of that now myself--wear/buy less black, wear more color and to wear what I love and to have fun with fashion and not worry about what other people think!

My style goal this year:
1) lip colour most days. It makes me happy.
2) invest in FANTASTIC shoes. The key to great outfits. But expensive so.... it’s going to take budget away from other clothing items.
3) invest in BRILLIANT accessories. Again, a key to great outfits. Luckily these don’t need to be expensive, imho.

Nuetrals I would like to keep focusing on:
All metallics
Camel/nude
Cadet blue

Colour I’d like to keep focusing on:

Soft yellows

Good luck everyone with 2019 wardrobe plans

Sorry to hear about all the broken bones. I have a balance problem that surfaces now and then, and luckily haven't broken anything yet. A New Year's resolution to work on that problem.

I've gone nuts on sales, coupons and special offers this last year, and I'm not completely happy with the result. It has given me a chance to experiment with colors and styles, but I do need to take a break.

So my first item is to resist current sales. I don't need anything because I bought so much last year. An exception would be a very special event, but I don't see any likelihood of that in the next few months.

I've done a lot of closet cleaning this year and I need to do more.
Lots of changes, and I need to come up with a plan that fits who I am now, not who I was 20 or 30 years ago. Or darn it, even 10 years ago.

One last item--I want to take a photo of every outfit every day. Every
day.

And stop buying so much black!

(Now let me tell you about my 3 hours of analyzing travel outfits at O'Hare while waiting for my delayed flight out . . . all black can look so chic!)

Oh no, sorry about your knee Sounds awful!
Not too early at all!
Mine so far:
"Happy little magpie" is not an effective strategy!
Duplicate/have spares of essentials and basics. Pay for quality! Avoid "settling" out of desperation to replace the basics-essentials.
Otherwise shop in capsules. Dont assume i have pieces that work or can find easily.
Stick to warm medium to dark colors and warm toned hardware. No blue or grey.
Limit shopping ahead, as life is subject to change.
No transitional items (short sleeves, cold shoulder, transitional shoes, etc). They only get about a month wear all year- 2 weeks in spring and 2 in fall.
Buy much less in 2019 overall, as i bought a lot this year and am comfortable with my wardrobe size.
In a nutshell: buy for my life, my climate, and my body!

Rotten about your knee though, which sounds quite painful.

My plan is to enjoy fashion more and not worry or dwell on things so much. And have comfortable feet at every occasion, of course! Make sure that I listen to my inner feelings when trying and buying. Watching the fit. Share more with YLF. New glasses.

It is not too early at all, just the right timing. Thanks for reminding me, I haven’t thought about it until now. I bought a lot this year, so my goal for next year is to slow down with shopping for a while and invest more in health and beauty - like getting regular haircuts and manicures, excersise more, etc. One area that I want to improve next year is my blazer collection - I adore blazers and wear them daily, the whole year, but most of it is on the cheap side - lot of inexpensive Zara blazers that are fun but not the greatest quality. I would like to invest in a few better versions next year. And I would like to establish the schedule for replacing my basics, like sleepwear, loungewear and underwear. I don’t refresh them often enough and start panicking when suddenly everything looks too shabby. Also maybe get another pair of glasses. And not the highest priority - but if I see this unicorn - my HEWI that I have been looking for last 3 years is knee high boots with low block heel and zipper that are not black or navy.

Yup! It's that time of year! I ended up doing way more editing this year, and little adding. My closet is at it's most minimal, but I'm also very, very happy with what I have and my daily outfits. I've been on board with white for a year now and can attest to high happiness with year round white used in outfits.

Jessi, I like the idea of listing out what worked and what didn’t for the past year in order to make thoughtful goals for next year. I definitely still made some purchasing mistakes — mostly based on buying for seasons that barely exist for my climate (spring and fall). I’ll be looking at my closet and taking notes!

Wow, sorry about all the injuries! Regarding the year ahead, I need to focus but I am looking for full length jeans - straight or flared, black and blue, a plaid vintage suit (that I will possibly barely wear, so it had better be thrifted), and a light blue structured bag, inspired by Angie's and weirdly hard to find second hand. Among other ideas!

I bet a lot of us will be thinking in this direction soon. Personally, I’ve been working on a rough list of “what works, what doesn’t” based on the past year of closet-related experiences.

I think it's always the right time to make style goals or resolutions!

I've given up on my no-buy until the first of the new year. Too many good sales are allowing me to stock up on things I kinda needed. I intend to restart the no-buy on the 1st, and stick to it because I really want new tattoos LOL

Not quite there yet for myself - except I want to improve my small work capsule. I only need three - four outfits per season but an extra blazer, pants and sweater should do it.

I have been pondering Ralph Lauren’s philosophy of fashion... that it’s about the vision of a life and the clothes follow... maybe I’m just an 80s baby, but that seems right to me...

It’s always a good time!

After committing to a closet audit/documentation project last summer, my goals for 2019 are to be more diligent in buying/donating. I’ve got too many instances of repeated clothes or cases where I picked up 2-3 tops and 1 ended up orphaned.

My other commitment is to more wardrobe play. If I’m going to maintain the (large) wardrobe I have, I need to start enjoying those clothes more, not just grabbing tried-and-true items. I suspect I’ll need to focus a shopping plan to allow for more use out of my wardrobe,
