I've done this before; I bought a pair of jeans at 70% off that were two sizes too big for me and had them taken in. My tailor is famously cheap but EXTREMELY good, and it cost me $60 to get it taken in at the waist, hip, thigh, knee and hemming.

HOWEVER, let me note that the jeans just did not look the same. See the thing is, when jean manufacturers set up measurements for sizes, they also scale everything up or down depending on the size. So even though the jeans fit me, they still looked too big, and the bootcut ended up looking more like a flare on my small frame. Plus they simply were not as flattering as a pair that fit me right to begin with. And if you wanted to take it in at the ankle as well, you're basically asking your tailor to make you a new pair of jeans!

My suggestion is don't do it. Ultimately it's just not worth it. If they're old jeans that you love, pass them on and splurge on something new to celebrate losing the weight. If they're a pair you bought because you loved the look but they don't fit, take them back and keep looking. It really isn't worth it in my opinion.

Thanks, there only slightly too big so I have a plan I think will work. One thing I want to have done to them is to have them tapered from about mid-thigh to the knee. I've heard it's possible, but I'm sure I'll need an actual dressmaker. Has anyone had this done?

I assume you mean you need it to be taken in in the waist, hips, rear, thighs, knees, calf and ankle?? If so, then it will be VERY expensive and the results questionable. I would think you'd need a highly skilled seamstress--not just a dry-cleaner tailor.

You could have them taken in a size from the waistband to the crotch point though. My mother has done this for me to several pairs of jeans. She removes the back center beltloop and deconstructs the rear center seam. She puts it all back together right down to the belt loop. How she does it, I don't know. Although, keep in mind this will change the placement of the back pockets.

Can I have a pair of bootcut jeans taken in everywhere, and still retain the original shape? Would it be near impossible for the tailor, or prohibitively expensive, to have it done? When people have their trousers taken in, do they only take them in at the waist? I always thought so. That's why I'm wondering if it makes sense to "shrink" a pair of curvy jeans.
