Ah Moms! Being one, and having one, I can say that we are probably all a little e nuts LOL Double buttons sounds like mom's own issue, rather than any real issue with your outfit.

I imagine that your Mom feels that she is lovingly mothering you when she says things about your style, just like she always has.
As far as 2 rows of buttons, that is everywhere, so like was mentioned above, it must have been those particular buttons that were bothering her.

I do not know how you could avoid two sets of buttons sometimes. I wonder if the sizes, colors or textures of the buttons were really different from one another. Maybe you could post what you were wearing. There is no rule that I have ever heard of that says anything about matching buttons. You might have to ignore with kindness some of your mother's comments and advice. She may not be used to how stylish you are becoming and as Sinead stated it is probably a generational thing. You are looking beautiful and never clashing.

Michelle, my Mom likes everything to match. I mean MATCH- as in, green print with green shoes with green scarf... and it must be the exact shade of green. We have had "discussions" on matching, over-matching, etc. and I just think it's a generational thing. She is horrified that I wear brown with black, so I try not to do it around her.

I don't think there is anything wrong with two sets of buttons- seems unavoidable- but I also think it's sometimes worth it to just change clothes when dear momma is bothered about something.

Oh, Michelle. I'm sorry you had to change out of what sounds like a perfectly lovely outfit.

I wouldn’t worry about making sure your buttons matched on items that you layered. From what I've seen of your style, you’re doing a fantastic job of putting together stylish and flattering outfits with several different sets of buttons that work in harmony with each other. But if you are ever in doubt, we'll help you out - especailly right before you go vist Mum!

I agree with Maya, a button-down cardigan over a button-down shirt is a classic look and perfectly acceptable.

That said, I have noticed on my own outfits that sometimes if the shirt or the sweater doesn't fit right, the buttons on both become more pronounced and suddenly seem out of place. I had that happen a couple of times particularly with white sweaters. Is it possible that that was what your mother was reacting to?

I have to disagree strongly. Sorry mom. Matching buttons is impossible unless you get one of those matchy matchy sets, which is so much worse. I guess you could just not wear two sets of buttons, but honestly, it is the last thing in the world I would notice. Wearing a cardi over a buttondown is a very classic look.

I spent the weekend with my parents, which is both delightful and nerve-wracking (mom is fabulous, but can be quite critical of my body). She has good style sense and taught me most of the skills I use now to shop, so I'm always especially keen to look good when I spend time with her.

Anyway this morning I came out wearing black clams, my aqua sleeveless blouse and a white v-neck button-front cardigan with white sandals. She didn't like the outfit and particularly criticized the fact that there were two sets of buttons happening (one on the blouse, one on the cardy). I wound up changing the outfit completely, but I'm now wondering what your take on this is. Is that a valid critique? If there's a way to make it work, are there other factors to consider such as button colour etc?
