Interesting thoughts.

Angie: I lock the loafers in a dungeon at night. I agree. Feeling good about an outfit doesn't mean it is not frumpy. I wonder if feeling frumpy effects how we dress.

R&J: That's why I got rid of this skirt. It made me feel frumpy no matter what. It was probably a fit issue.

Debby: Sorry to hear about the cardigans. I had that with cardigan before. Can you use them unbuttoned?

I do like the top and blazer better with jeans. Having the top untucked doesn't seem to go with the more formal blazer and skirt, but that might be my own personal preference.

I have a couple of cardigan sweaters from a retail chain store that looked great on the mannequin, and when I got them home, I tried to style them similarly, with a skinny belt. The fabric of the cardigan never fell right no matter how loose or tight I made the belt, and to wear them over pants with a bulky (belt loop) waistband didn't help. I discovered later that these sweaters were pinned in the back on the mannequin to give that shapely, non bumpy look that I couldn't get at home. Grrr. I'm still not sure how to style them on me (or any real person) without them pooching out just above the bottom ribbing.

Your question about "is it always styling?" is a great one, and I can't wait to read the others' answers.

LoP, you are a legend and not just a veteran! Yes I do believe avoiding frump is to a large extent in the execution but there are some items which are irredeemable. I would defy anyone to make this garment look unfrumped http://www.bonmarche.co.uk/3-5.....44-neutral

More thoughts...

Feeling frumpy can be different to looking frumpy AND vice versa. I don't think it's a question of "I feel good in my outfit so I don't look frumpy". Some blog comments were made in that vain - and if that were the case - no one would ever look frumpy!

You don't look frumpy to me in any of these photos, LoP. I do prefer the jeans outfits though - more current than the denim skirt somehow. Looooove your loafers! I am stealing them tonight.

Angie's bog post on frumpy looks today made me think of proportions and how hard it is sometimes to find the right mix of tucking vs. untucking the shirt, skirt vs. pants, etc. It is also sometimes a specific piece that I find hard to style to look right.

Here are a few pictures I took through a recent transformation.

#1 made me feel incredibly frumpy.
#2 was an improvement, but the proportions still didn't look right.
#3&4 felt reasonable to get out of the door. I felt more in my element, but I had to give up the idea of wearing that skirt. I actually got rid of it that day since I noticed it is the skirt that made me feel frumpy.

Do you ever have a specific item that looks right on paper, but doesn't make you feel good when you wear it? How do you judge if it is a specific garment or how you style it is the problem? Or is it always about styling?
