I went to the Maroon 5 concert last night, and the female singer wore a floaty boho maxi skirt or dress (it was hard to tell, even on the screen) that had a large floral pattern on a black gauzy background, and high side slits. The bodice was very fitted, and may have been a tank, but she wore a fierce black fitted leather moto jacket over it, with quilting around the sides (I cannot recall for the life of me who posted photos of something similar, but it's a type that's been bouncing around these forums). She also had black suede platform pumps. Her black hair was worn long and wavy and kind of retro, and her eye-makeup was rock-and-roll, with a red, retro-style lip.

The overall effect was this boho-rock-n-roll, very badass, very chic look. I was totally jealous. I googled to try and find a photo, but there are surprisingly few photos. I guess all the kids were filming the concert on their phones, not taking stills.

So it looks like boho isn't going anywhere. It's just making friends with the cool rock-n-roll kids hanging out behind the school and smoking.
T-Rex, *laughing*, that "Bad!! Bad Boho!!! Bad!!" version, unfortunately, seems to be endemic for aging profs in universities and probably is why I cringe at the thought of boho style on a 60-year-old woman.

But, I do think that youthful boho can morph into an artistic style which looks great on some of my colleagues. Their artistic style is quite sophisticated and they wear their outfits with great flair.
I love your photos, and I think you look great! I don't get a dated vibe at all, but then, I follow trends less than the average bear...

I admire boho looks, and there is a woman at my flamenco school, in her late 50's/early 60's, who always looks stunning, because she usually has a tailored piece in her hippie-chic mix.

For my part, I have tried boho, and I always feel like an imposter, somehow. Either I look too cutesy-precious (ruffles or florals), or I look frumpy and shapeless (because I'm short and curvy), or I look like mutton dressed as lamb (possibly the most awful-yet-truthful expression out there)...

Thanks everyone. I don't even own pic 5 anymore. That is a very old pic but I wanted to show Rachylou my boho persona & that was one I found. The white eyelet is a maxi dress with a denim vest & scarf. It is for the beach. I will post a pic of it without vest to see if anyone thinks I can still pull it off at the beach or beachside places.

Elle, I think you do boho very well. None of those looks look dated to me, except maybe 6. And even in that case, I would just remix the pieces a different way. I really love that white eyelet skirt. I'm not sure about the top...is it a sleeveless denim shirt? I don't like it with the skirt, but it may look fine with something else.

Someone else mentioned 5 as one to abandon. I don't like that dress for city wear. But it looks like you may be at a beach or something in that pic, and I think that outfit is perfect for that kind of location. Anyway, you look cute and current in these pics. Look 2 is one I really like, especially with the hat.

Gaylene, I think middle aged and older women can pull off a boho look. I'm 47, and I hope I pull it off! I'm also thinking of a woman who is a least my age, and possibly older, who looks absolutely beautiful every time I see her. I think perhaps older women work the boho look better if they look for better quality items, and/or aim for a more elegant look. I also think that it's possible for an older woman to successfully pull off a quirky boho look.

I think I know the middle aged boho look that you are referring to, though. It's a lazy, kind of shabby look. It's the kind of thing that we often overlook in the young, because we (or at least I) assume that they are either too busy with studies, too poor to upgrade even the least little bit, or they are experimenting with style and their look is a work in progress. Plus, youth has it's own beauty that often trumps whatever hideous thing a young person may be wearing.

And now, all I can think is "Bad!! Bad Boho!!! Bad!!"

Agree with Cciele, your boho side looks great! Mine also comes out in warmer weather, and your looks #3 and #4 are staples of mine. I think pairing an "obviously current" trend OR with a classic piece or two can help keep boho looks up to date.

Here are past boho outfits of mine. I tend to wear them in the Summer around SoCal or hippy parts of Australia. Not in NY or cities in Australia. I also have pinned boho looks I like here.
http://pinterest.com/lovlealea.....eal-to-me/

What I mean by before it was big was before the Olsens made it mainstream again, which is what I think is now dated. Their boho style (if they are even still boho) is not the latest look. I know it started in the 60s when I was a little one. My Mum did dress me in it in the 70s though.

Do you have a sample of your boho look? I have your rocker chick look so firmly ensconced in my mind, I can't imagine.

Anyhoo, I think at this point, boho is a fundamental style that is evolving over time. Or, well, I could be confused. But I think '60s flower children then on to Sienna Miller and progressing to the Olsen twins. I'm not sure what's happening in the boho world now, but it's a good question! Maybe I should do a search on Pinterest...
Yes T-Rex & Gaylene I tend to wear it in Summer at festivals. In winter I am more rock or urban chick. Sometimes more RATE & sometimes more polished depending on the occasion. I am trying to hone my style right now so I'm needing some help.

I think boho is always around, but in different guises, so, yes, it can look dated if it's boho from a few years back. I also think that it's a look that works better for a younger woman because of the connotations that T-Rex summarized so well. To my eye, boho can look a bit weird and dated when I see it on a middle-aged, or older, woman, so I think it is not a particularly age-friendly look.
I've thought about it some more. For me, the boho look is kind of seasonal. I think of long, flowy skirts, sandals, light airy fabrics, prints in bright colors, art festivals, outdoor concerts, drinking wine on a blanket on someone's lawn, and so on. I have worn boho looks during the winter, but I'm far more likely to sport the look when it is warm and I have the day off to spend with my friends.

I think the elements of boho are timeless. But perhaps full on boho could look dated, depending on where you live. Personally, I love the style, and I revisit it every so often regardless of whether it is trendy or not. I live in a college town although I'm well outside of that age range, and my group of friends includes hippies, neopagans, belly dancers, etc. So it's never completely out of style for me.

Maybe you could pick one or two items you love most, and work them into a not so boho outfit.
