I still love black! I have many black items. It's always been a favorite, but maybe even more so as I age. I feel better in mostly dark colors. I also find I don't care as much as I once did whether a color flatters or looks good near my face. I just want to wear what I want to wear.

Nodding along with what Jaime said, at least in terms of black being so much easier to source and easier to be specific about.

Black looks okay on me if I wear makeup, but it's not my best -- dark or ink blue is a better dark on me, so that's what I wear. Also charcoal. I think those can be as elegant as black in the right type of pieces, but as you and others point out, the right pieces are so much harder to source.

I still wear black footwear (especially in winter) and if I saw something I just had to have and it only came in black, I might try it, especially if I could mix it with blues. A lot of my blues "read" as black anyway, in some lights.

I think black can look great on people with grey hair. So hair colour isn't a problem for it.

Sloper, I hear that! Black tops can seem to work better than expected when the lighting is just right, maybe I look well- rested ( still old though) , maybe have on some lipstick— then bam, under other conditions itsa not so good.

I’ve moved away from black over the last ten years. Wore quite a bit for work, but since I longer work, and other lifestyle changes, I’m just not feeling it so much.

Also, age and prednisone have made my face a bit jowely . Black seems harsh and adds under-jaw shadows. Light colors and bright scarves look better.

I appreciate the encouragement, while I still recognize that black doesn’t look good on me ( face- color - wise).

What I found was certain styles that I can best describe as more “ sophisticated and elegant” —a certain cut, fit, and neckline, and in particular in dresses and better tops , was showing up in black but not in other colors that I’d prefer, like near- neutrals. Not never, but super- HEWI, so that I was wearing good-for- me colors but skewing frumpy ( sorry for no better word). There is probably a small element that black is more forgiving of lower quality and fabric and fit, and benefits from some assumptions and associations with more formal and elegant occasions and wear, but I know I would love to find the right styles in not- black. Again this is not really an issue for the most casual wear or for having a wardrobe that is mostly black, but for certain uses & occasions.

I’ve been working on shifting my wardrobe away from black and haven’t looked back, yet. Like Angie I prefer navy as my dark neutral which is more flattering on me than black, I don’t think all black will ever be removed from my wardrobe, I have some sentimental items that are black and my favorite sports team has the colors of black, white, and red. But black is a classic for a reason and always available in retail, if you enjoy wearing it I say keep doing so and enjoy it!

I have winter coloring (like Joan Baez). I look good in black. I wouldn’t wear it if it wasn’t a good color for me, but it is. When I want to perk myself up, I wear light blue near my face. If it looks good on you, I say why not wear it!

Luckily for me, I've never aspired to sophistication or elegance. I started with (brownish) black hair, but now that I have salt'n'pepper hair black and white prints and patterns look almost magical on me and charcoal looks almost as good. I continue to buy black, however, because it is easy and I find it soothing.

Black isn’t my favorite, but as Jaime said, it’s much easier to find the silhouette, style, texture that’s your priority if you don’t exclude black. I rarely wear it as a face color though, unless I’m feeling particularly sprightly.

Well, quite interesting takes on black!

I think it won’t ever be a mainstay for top- half items. Though it IS for pants.
For now I am thinking of it as very occasional item- specific departure from mostly no black tops or dresses.

I love black and will always have it, even if it's not technically my best. Over the years I have added more or less depending on what leg of my style journey I've been on, but it's too versatile, reliable, flattering (I do personally believe it works on everyone, even if it's not the best), accessible and practical to ever give it up!

There's always been a place in my closet for black, but as many have mentioned it feels pretty harsh around my face. A black turtle neck is definitely the worst on me, I need some skin, jewelry or other colours around my neckline to break it up. I also default mostly to black footwear, belts and bags as they are easy to source and come in variety of styles and options.

I like variety and am happiest when I have a mix of black and other dark neutrals. The mix is really dictated by what I can find at the short list of brands that work for me. This year added brown and winter weight army green. Last year all I could find was burgundy and grey. But through it all black predominates.

I get this. It is much easier to be highly specific about silhouette, size, texture, and other details if you are open to black. Certainly true for me as a second hand shopper. Black is not my favorite color next to my face, but it does work on me in certain cases. I also wear black bottoms, shoes and bags frequently.

Kate, yes to washed black! For casual items.
Carol— I also like pairing black pants with more tonal colors. Neither bright nor pastels are great on me anyway.
If I could find dressy separates that worked well, I’d try for a pewter or a grayish blue or dusky deep lavender for the whole outfit or for with black pants.

I have a lot of black now because I purchased on sale, and other neutrals like grey or beige were out. It is a good color, but can be tricky. I have some black Calvin Klein stuff and that is great--a dressy grey tee with black ankle pants, for instance.

It is too easy to not pay attention and pair it with things like brights or pastels, which can look dated in certain lights.

My closet used to be almost all black, and I loved it. But about 10-15 years ago, I found black near my face drained me of what color I had. So, I slowly got rid of my black tops, dresses, and outerwear.

I rediscovered my love for tonal outfits in other neutrals, especially brown and mid to charcoal grays, but others as well, including mustard, olive, & plum.

I still wear black bottoms of any intensity, but my best black is a washed black, and my one black jeans jacket is also in washed black.

Occasionally in summer I wear a sleeveless or short sleeved black top, but I usually have a bit of color in my pale skin (not even the strongest sun block can keep the sun from finding me), which helps soften the effect of a rich, deep black.

In other seasons, a bit of cheek and lip color and contrasting accessories do the same thing.

Fortunately, I don’t miss black as much as I thought I would in the beginning. I do still have one black dramatic midi length lightweight wool coat that I can pull out and wear with a contrasting scarf when I need to revisit the elegance of black.

Black is a happy colour for me and will always be in my wardrobe because of my love of 1980's and 1990's fashion. In 2024 I bought a black coat that is streamlined and I adore the simplicity of its lines and whilst removed from my usual exuberant style, find it has fitted seamlessly into my wardrobe.

I never gave it up, Unfrumped. It is not my best colour according to my Clear Spring palette, but I think I just find it soothing sometimes to wear a black top. I do it maybe more in summer when I have one black T-shirt with studs around the edges of the short sleeves and the chest pocket, plus a summer top with flutter sleeves. I wonder if it’s because some skin shows that I like them? They are just so easy to wear with my black and white snakeskin summer pants and also my bronze/black/brown swirl pants, no thinking required.
In winter my most worn skivvy (mock neck) is black but it’s usually underneath a contrasting sweater so you don’t see the extent of it just the peek at the neckline.
I will never do an Angie on this and change to dark ink blue. It’s easier to buy prints with black in them.

Elegance is in the eye of the beholder in my opinion. I will agree that a monochromatic or tonal outfit is an easy formula for elegance, but can be done in any colour. Black is probably the easiest to get disparate pieces to match, and seems to be the default colour for any item.

Goth style relies heavily on black, but I wouldn’t necessarily call it ‘elegant’. On the other hand I find Max Mara magazine adverts extremely elegant, however they don’t seem to use much black.

A quarter of my garments and accessories are black, and almost a quarter are dark blue (including dark denim). When I recently had a choice to make for a sweater, a pair of pants, and a pair of loafers - I could have defaulted to black - however, I made a conscious decision and chose colour instead (navy, brown, and caramel).

My style muse is one of my parents’ friends who we used to visit often when I was growing up in the 70s. We lived in a temperate climate that generally ranged between 55 and 70 degrees F year round. She always wore a solid column of color consisting of a cashmere turtleneck and wide leg pants. It was her uniform and she always looked stunning with her blonde hair and minimal gold jewelry. Her most elegant set was black. Fast forward 50 years and this combination is still my power outfit. For work, I’ll add a blazer. I feel confident in black. While I also enjoy wearing color, I can’t ever see black falling out of favor in my wardrobe.

I do feel like it’s more of a compromise for me. I have decided not to completely EXCLUDE black from some types of tops, dresses/ combos that fill a wardrobe hole regarding occasion, style, fabric that I’ve struggled to fill via more flattering colors. I’m trying not to go too deep, which is actually a risk once the gateway to black is opened!

I have found another possible benefit, which may sound extravagant, but as I found an item or two that really ticked a lot of boxes in terms of style goals( using that term very broadly as to cut, fit, fabric, level of formality ) , I try to wear the item with a critical eye as to , what is it doing for me that works? Does it help me get dressed, do I feel great, is it filling or suggesting a style direction that is not related to its being black—it might for example be, yeah! this cut, length, neckline is what I should be focusing on in general. Or maybe it just plays well with other things. Or is it something I’d never wear in a different color even if I found it.

With my hair and skin tone, I feel washed out and ghostlike in black. I have a friend who looks like Joan Baez and she wears almost nothing but black, and looks great in it. I always thought those who could wear it were lucky because everything comes in black and it all works together.

Black has been my all time favourite I could happily live in black all year round. I do buy other neutrals white grey charcoal and green but I always favour black.

I have more black pieces than I consider truly optimal, because it's easy. Just this season I bought a second dressy-ish black velvet jacket for warmth for holiday parties.

Makes sense, unfrumped! Most of my friends and clients are on your team, and relate to what you're saying. Some wear a lot of black. Some wear a bit of it - and there is everything in-between. Black items are VERY available! That helps. I support whatever makes you feel your best :)

My impression here on YLF is that most like wearing black and prefer neutral colours - which includes earth tones - rather than wearing non-neutrals. You are in great company!

To answer your question, no black for me. I do not feel fab wearing black. I stopped wearing black completely 9 years ago. I do wear very dark blue. Ink blue and navy are my black! I will wear a dark blue top and dark blue bottoms with high contrast footwear, belt, eyewear and white pearls. My make-up is just like Irina's. Some eye-make-up and natural lips with shine.

Decades ago, I used to think that I had to wear black to look stylish, fashionable, hip and fabulous. After all, I'm in the industry!!! I found my way by listening to my feelings. I prefer dark blue to black, and haven't looked back!

These are the black things purchased in 2025 so I am not off black. It just works for me - from a practical and aesthetic perspective. Whilst not my best colour I think black is just as good as dark navy or dark chocolate.

I rediscovered black when I went grey. I used to tint my long, mid brown hair with semi permanent warm brown colors to get more of a chestnut shade. I avoided wearing black on the top part of my body, I didn’t like the combination with my hair.
Black is now my most worn color, including all black outfits. I feel that even a simple outfit in all black looks (to me) elegant. I wear all grey or all navy outfits, too. And my minimalist heart flutters :)
I don’t do anything special when wearing black, maybe just making sure I wear earrings to add some shine. Makeup is very personal, at this time I enjoy eye makeup and keep my lips natural with slightly tinted lip gloss.

Interesting comments! Thank you.

I’m pressure this issue is more at work for items that might be for dressier or polished or special events. Not that I need that many. But, I had made a habit of either blocking or nay-naying say, all black dresses. Even if the photo showed a style that had great potential ( talking online orders) to be just right. Maybe even great. And not even the most expensive sorts. Not to mention the footwear issue—much easier to find black footwear that works for problematic feet and is at least somewhat pulled -together. So I have had great trouble having a capsule or a dedicated outfit or 2 for any nice occasion.

I still pay big attention to necklines and sleeves, with black. A long- sleeved turtleneck in black is overwhelming on me , though it would look very chic on many others.
