Jenny, your hair looks great! I love that outfit also. I'm going to follow your tips and give it a try. I'm really drawn to 40s style, bombshell yet still elegant and classy.

That was really my first go at it, although I have had bursts of time in which I tried to set my hair on rollers at night and such.

This was actually very easy because it only involved doing two pin curls at the front. First, I made a zig-zag part on one side. Then I wet two smallish sections of hair in the front and put heavy-duty styling mousse on them. The mousse is optional - I really wanted to make sure I had a pretty stiff curl.

I rolled them into standing pin curls to get extra volume and then went to sleep! In the morning I brushed out the curls and formed it into one big roll, which was really easy because it *wants* to form that way. I secured the roll with a bobby pin.

Then I took the side portions and just twisted them back a bit and put a decorative bobby pin in.

Really very easy! I watched loads of pin curl tutorials on YouTube. Just type "pin curls" into the search. I especially liked StrawberryKoi's tutorial.

If you want to practice this look without being obligated to wear it to work, do the pin curl part as soon as you get home from work. Use a blow dryer to get it pretty dry and then just let it sit while you do your usual evening stuff. Once it's good and dry (got to be dry!), take it out and start playing with the curl and practicing the roll.

If you hate it and it proves too frustrating, just wet it down. If you like it, it's easy to re-roll it into the pin curl again before you go to bed. Then in the morning it will spring right back into the roll.

Let us know if you try it! If it proves too off-topic for YLF, post a comment on my blog and make sure to take a pic!

I had no idea I was on the cusp of a trend! Hee hee hee! I'm very drawn to 40s hairstyles and have been for a long time but have just recently started playing with it, as witnessed here:

http://goingungracefully.files.....001052.jpg

I need a lot of practice. Pin curling the front lock of one's hair is manageable, but doing the whole head is quite another!

Kristine, those pictures are really lovely. I so often wish I could just take my head off, set it on the counter and do my hair and makeup. It would make things so much easier!

Similar to Dita Von Teese, but I agree, not as sprayed and costumey. 40s inspired but not over the top, at least not for work! Although for a night out it might be kind of fun! This article has some softer modern takes on it...

http://www.elleuk.com/beauty/c.....1940s-hair

RoseandJoan and Ele, I'd love to try victory rolls! I'll post some pictures if I can wrangle my hair into a 40s 'do.

Like Dita Von Teese? I'm fond of forties hair but I'm afraid it could look too costumey and hairsprayed. However, if there is a modern way to wear it, I would be happy to try. I have thick, wavy shoulder-length hair that I wear in a side-part, so I think I could pull off the look. The only problem is that my hair texture is very fine and slippery, which makes it hard to hold a style for long.

My grandmother was a college girl in the forties and her hair looks so gorgeous in old photos. She was a beauty.

I wear victory rolls! Of course with my curly hair mine are a bit different, but I love 40's hair. With red lips, especially :)

You're right, this look has been trending hard over the past year or so, and is probably headed toward the mainstream. There's a new artist in the UK called Paloma Faith who wears some great 40's-inspired hairdos, so it's been cropping up more and more.

My hair is no longer long enough for the classic waves but I love the classic victory rolls sported in the forties and would attempt a deconstructed version for a special evening.

I've been reading about hair trends and see that 40s style hair is big (no pun intended, "big hair"). I think this is a style that would work well with my cut and texture. I thought I might even go visit my mom (former stylist) and see if she'll give me an old fashioned shampoo and set! Is anyone else trying some 40s waves?
