Thanks for sharing this. I am into my sixth decade and my happiness at seeing people play and enjoy fashion (or anything else) has never been higher. Have fun getting dressed, decorating your home, doing origami, poetry or brass sculptures. Fun is sometimes underrated. I appreciate all the attention to art, passion and details. It always makes me smile. The myth that the enjoyment must end at certain point, well, I simply can't go there. Especially now...

Although I have a very different style, I adore their confidence! Along the lines of Angie's comment, I'm inspired by how they have so much fun with fashion and feel affirmed in having my own style (far from maximal, but definitely dressier than the norm) when I see theirs.

You look beautiful. I am a fan of advanced hair styles. I do not like to carry the same boring hair styles every day. So, I have started wearing cheap hair wigs online. I am planning to order Half wigs online.

Good point, Cerinda and Gaylene. Invisibility or caricature, indeed. The OTT style is celebrated and it almost seems a little patronizing ("oh, look at those cute wacky old ladies!"), but there is not a lot of coverage out there of women over a certain age who have fun with fashion without having to go to such extremes. Women whose lives are filled with work, volunteering, creating, taking care of family, etc. I certainly know a few of them, some here on the forum and some IRL.

Interesting question, Angie, "...having fun with fashion....how can that not be inspirational?"

My response is Yes and No. For those who truly love getting dressed up and adore fashion, I can see the inspirational aspect of AS. But I also think Laura and Cerinda nailed it for many of us seniors who don't want to scream nor to whisper. Seen in that light, AS doesn't inspire me as much as make me groan with its unique perspective on "having fun with fashion".

I wonder if the site/book/film get so much traction because
they feature so many older women who choose such exaggerated personal
style. Is the culture suggesting that we have only two options --
invisibility or caricature?

Well put, Cerinda. That's what I was wondering too, but hadn't figured out how to articulate yet.

It's almost as if you can either be elegant and subtle, or maximal and out-there. Anything in-between, especially trying to look younger, is "trying too hard" and "mutton dressed as lamb".

I LOVE that the women on AS are having fun with fashion. It tickles my toes in a very BIG way. It also gives younger ladies - such as Sarah here - a right of passage and confirmation to continue to have fun with fashion at ay age. SHOUT THAT FROM THE ROOF TOPS WITH ME! How can that not be inspirational?

Do I aspire to having a style like those women in my 60s, 70s and 80s? I don't. Not at all. I want a less theatrical and softer style that screams as loudly.

I tend to agree with my older YLF counterparts that AS isn't really reflective of how most older women would choose to dress. It's a look that is very specific to a certain environment, income bracket, and life style--and rather heavily marketed towards a younger demographic. AS actually seems rather quaint and old fashioned to me--like a colorful costume for older folk who want to look like they are still part of the street parade.

Costume dressing is definitely a luxury of city living! And the bigger or more progressive the city, the more you can get away with it. I would even argue that the ability to get away with it varies widely depending on what part of town you are in.

I do hold myself back from anything too...anything...because it would just look so out of place in most of where I will find myself in the course of a day. I like to look a *little* outside of the environmental norm, but not like I'm visiting from another planet, or even another country.

Costume dressing is a plight? disease? of living in an ultra urban enviro. So many things about city living are divorced from their intrinsic reality. It's why I keep a 'going to the 'burbs' capsule. Even the PIB look, the most pared down urban style, is simply embarrassing and makes people want to beat you up: you are the weakest link

It's sometimes fun to look at, but I'm 50 and I'm not inspired by the styles at all. However, I totally appreciate the attitude. Oh, and I love Linda Rodin.

On one hand, it sort of cracks me up how 20-somethings romanticize these hallmarks of aging ("I can't wait to turn grey!" Really? You're in a hurry to be older? Enjoy where you are now!), but I am also glad that the tide may be turning away from the trend of ignoring older people and acting as though being young or looking young is the holy grail of success in our society.

It's OTT for me. What's more, ny DH & I have always had to live & work in rural agricultural areas, where this would be impossible for most women to pull off. I do admire women who are able to dress in such a bold way, but hope that those of us who seek a middle ground between flamboyant and frumpy can manage to find the types of garments & accessories we want to wear and that people won't ignore us.

Shevia: I hope you're right that there will be room for the rest of us. Maybe retailers will take notice now that the population is aging.

I agree with MsMaven. I'm the age ( nearly 70) to have advanced style but realize that I live in the wrong place. It would be ok if living in a large urban area but would be misunderstood in the suburbs and small towns. I still have fun with fashion and probably wear lots of things I shouldn't. I dressed more like those ladies when I was a college student than I do now but enjoy looking at those who can get away with advanced style. The women in the documentary enjoy better health and mental sharpness than most women their age, something for which one does not have total control as they age.

I used to read the blog. I think that if you live in a big city with lots of street life it would be fun to strut your stuff no matter your age. But for me, a suburban Californian who would never get out of the house if she had to get all gussied up, such clothing is unrealistic. My pal's MIL lived in Manhattan for decades in a fashionable area and she was interesting to watch. She had many facelifts, and I'm told that when she died her calf muscles were permanently shortened so that she could only wear heels. She was buried with her toes pointing down.

I think it's inspiring to see, certainly. A lot of the looks are not what I aspire to, but seeing the photographs and videos makes me wonder what direction my style will take me in future decades (much as Rabbit notes). I doubt I'll go very maximal or dramatic, but who knows?

It's refreshing to hear you are inspired by older women's styles, as it seems the media messages all around us aim to point us in the other direction--to admire youthful models, whatever our age. Thanks for sharing your thoughts, and welcome to the forum!

I'm not a fan of the OTT looks. It's just too much. Wow. But if they want to dress that way, it's fine with me.

I let my hair go grey three years ago. I definitely like the freedom, and the natural highlights. Apparently grey hair among the young is a thing. So, you don't have to wait. Go for it. Be warned, though, it won't look the same, plus it might be expensive to maintain.

I have flipped through that book and even though it's not my current style I admire it. The men and women, regardless of their background/employment strike me as artists and individualists who don't let age constrain self expression. I think the penchant for bright colors and hectic design are partly the photographer's curatorial bias, it's not really a broad spectrum of looks. Also a lot is location, they are New Yorkers.

'Aging gracefully and with sophistication' carries to me a little bit of an undercurrent association with aging quietly/unobtrusively, or alternately with being a corporate tycoon or rich retiree (in which the markers of grace and sophistication in dress and hair are class based). I know that's probably just my head, and not what you necessarily meant Lisa, as there are many older style icons whose lane is chic simplicity and I can see the appeal of that as well.

I'm not sure what lane I'll steer for by the time I'm full on elderly if I'm lucky enough to make it there, I have been dying my hair since it started to go gray at the roots at 21.

The maximalism that's focused on at AS has never appealed to me personally. If it's OTT when you're 22, it's still OTT when you're 82. But then I was raised by generations of southern ladies who were very concerned about not looking trashy. New York classy is a very different animal, with a lot more bling and display.

I should be happy that there has been more attention given to older women and their style recently - Iris Apfel, Joan Didion modeling for Celine, etc. - but I can't help but see it as patronizing attention at best. Is it worse to be ignored, or to be a mascot?

I enjoy looking at the Advanced Style ladies. If some of them have outfits that venture into flights of fancy, good for them, they've earned the right. I hope to stay in the understated range of fashion when I get to a certain age, but if others want to let their over-the-top flags fly, it's fine with me.
