I practically said these exact words iwhile in Boston. The problem is that there are so many items in the shape and style I want in ONLY those colors. In fact, on my trip I bought a really awesome tunic from a brand called Cut Loose, in grey and black stripes because there were no other options.... I told my sister I was done buying ANYTHING ELSE in those colors, even though they work well for me - I have more than enough!

I love black and will never tire of it. If I see a sea of people and someone like Deborah sporting her black ensembles it is she who would draw my eye. I don't think there is anything like the sleek/elegant line that well done black can do.

I do sport many red or burgundy pieces in my wardrobe as well as other colours but well done black is something I wish I could do.

Black and grey will probably always have an important place in my wardrobe, but there are things I want to find in some other color...like a sweater dress. Those that meet other criteria all seem to only come in black or charcoal grey. I'd especially love to find more cobalt, navy and ink blue.

I'm over black (though it is a flattering color for me) but I love grey. I rarely wear the black pieces I have now. And the now available grey is why I broke SYC -- definitely stocking up with some new pieces right now. I'm also into red, plum, coral and blues (especially ink blue and dark navy). I love color but I find I don't like wearing it as much as I like wearing neutrals or almost-neutrals. I feel that neutrals have a more calming effect on me (I'm rather reserved but slightly hyperactive and considered outgoing). I've found that wearing flattering colors that I love like emerald and fuschia feels too "noisy" to me and prefer the toned-down hues. Some more grey pieces and I'm back to SYC...

I'm trying to move away from too much black and grey, but feel like I'm making a lot of mistakes in the process. Meanwhile, at this time of year - it's a sea of black and grey out there it seems. Tried Macy's yesterday to look at winter coats, and almost everything was black or grey. Ended up buying two 'not-black' coats - an olive/military green shorter peacoat, and a longer knee-length smoke (not khaki, not quite grey either) coat. I don't think I love them - what I wanted was something red, blue, green, purple or a false-plain textured type of coat.

Just realized that a lot of the 'mistakes' I am making in my attempts to get away from plain black or grey are with patterned tops. I have all these so-called closet orphans because I am not finding really nice colours. Hmm...I don't love the patterns I've bought much either.

Aha! I think for now, I'm going to implement a "no patterns" rule for a short while. I like patterned dresses, but not too many patterned tops, which end up just hanging there in the closet.

Interesting. I have always loved grey and, to a lesser extent, black, but I've always worn a lot of color as well. Since I've been trying to look more pulled together, I find myself reaching for the black and gray more often. I'm not sure if it's a subconscious "stylish people wear black" thing or what?

I always have plenty of black in my wardrobe and have tried to refrain from buying more. In doing so I have unwittingly ended up with a very grey wardrobe. I'm banning myself from more grey and am being drawn to red (always happens in winter for me) and olive green is my new color of choice (it was purple last year) I'm definitely seeing tons of black and grey in stores but pass them up for more interesting patterns and of course Sparkles (also everywhere)

Black and gray are the backbone colors of my wardrobe - don't know what I would do without them! However, IF I were shopping these days, I probably wouldn't be buying anymore black and gray items right now because I have enough of them. I would really like a bright colorful purse. Aida's orange Kate Spade bag is calling my name - but SYC is preventing me from even looking! Such a bummer!

I have a LOT of black in both my summer and winter wardrobes, but since YLF I am successfully managing to incorporate color and I am finding myself a little less drawn to black when I am out shopping. I am still loving wearing black but I recognize that I probably have all I need at the moment. For example, I have quite a few LBD's, and I have all my 'basics' in black. Grey is not a color I wear a lot but would actually like to bring a little more of it into my wardrobe so I am on the look out.

I have a lot of black but very little gray in my wardrobe. I've been dreaming of a gray fitted sweater dress for some time now, but I can't seem to find one that's knee length on me (height has its disadvantages sometimes). . . .

Well, until last year I had hardly anything black or grey in my wardrobe - at all! I have discovered the power of great neutrals only after finding YLF so dressing with black and grey still feels fresh to me. When I get dressed now I usually swing between colors and neutrals almost daily.
I guess I am not over buying black and grey items yet as I just ordered a grey jacket from Nordstrom. I have some other black and grey items on my list: black low heels or flats, grey booties, a couple of basic longish black and grey tops...I have so many colorful items that I need a good neutral partners for them.
However I don't own a single black coat and don't want any!

You're right, Angie, colorful clothing is especially hard to find at this time of year. I think you scored big time with that red wool coat you found at J. Crew recently. It's such a beautiful, vibrant color.

I know a lot of people resort to black and grey because they're such easy neutrals (me!). There's no fear of those pieces not matching something in your closet. Also, dark colors are safe colors--a person can totally blend into the crowd wearing them. Some people even seem to be afraid of color--worrying about looking clownish/garish. It's sad, really, because rich colors can provide an emotional lift.

Yeah, I was at H&M and noticed a bunch of tunics, tops, and dresses that seemed summery!

I'm also avoiding buying more black... I enjoy wearing it but don't need anymore. Recently I did pick up a gray blazer that has an amazing cut. But I'm branching out in color -- bought a green sweater dress and purple zebra tights! All muted tones for my winter wear

At the moment, I do think that killer colourful Winter clothing is hard to find. There are loads of flimsy blouses in colours - but that's the type of stuff I wear in Summer

When I first moved to Austin I tried to do the colors thing because very few people wear black here (probably the heat). But after three years I'm moving back to black again, albeit with *a lot* of white thrown in. I'm just not a patterns or bright colors gal, I'm a textures gal - and I love me my black! And charcoal gray. Other grays are too pale for me!

However, I am oddly not finding much to buy this season. I think I'm full up.

I'm definitely with you on moving away from black - it has been my go to colour for years (nearly all my shoes, bags and belts were that colour for years). I'm trying to move my wardrobe neutrals to more blue/grey so I'm still buying grey. but I'm also trying to add in more colour in tops and accessories especially. Lusting after a pair of vivid shoes...maybe in a hot turquoise...

That's funny -- after Angie's "wearing gray with bright jeans" blog post, I got a fab gray blazer at the Nordie's sale. It comes back from the tailor tomorrow (sleeve length -- the bane of my existence!) and I can't wait to take it out for a spin!

And 8 finally found the perfect black leather jacket at a consignment store in Santa Barbara a week or two ago -- ditto the tailor, ditto sleeve length, double ditto can't wait to take it out for a spin!

My most recent purchases have included a black cashmere mockneck sweater, black/white melange sweaterdress and a black/grey/beige ombre panel dress. Very neutral!

I'm not craving much grey and black myself right now, either. The thing that really strikes me about this over-reliance on grey and black is that it feels so old-fashioned, kind of "pre-internet" and all that that implies.

in 1984 black felt kind of fresh, and like a new way of streamlining your wardrobe. Over 25 years later, it's easy for black especially to seem like a lazy default choice if not handled creatively. With all this new technology and connectivity you would think that designers and retailers would be excited to find ways to develop more original and flattering color schemes that work together easily and feel modern.

Computers and the internet should also make educating clients about how these type of color schemes could work in their wardrobes so much easier and personalized than in the past. I'm sure there's a million practical reasons why this isn't happening, but it sure feels like a huge lag - almost like the fashion industry is caught in a time warp behind the rest of society. It's funny how these ideas can be 'in the air', though beats me where they come from! Fun topic, steph

I do get it. I'm trying to back away from black slightly, at least right near my face, because I wonder if it's become a tad aging for me. I'll still wear it, but I'm experimenting with some other colors. (Angie? Did you just faint?)

However - I've been on the hunt for the perfect grey boots for a while. When I find them I will snatch them right up!

Yes, I have tons of both, and I love both...but I am *so* loving all of the brights and colorful patterns available right now.

I have waaaaayyyyy too much grey in my wardrobe right now. And it's the first color after blue I keep picking up (then putting down) in stores.

Man, do I ever!! I too love the grey and black items in my closet, but over here the grey and black overload has been going on for many many cold weather seasons. It's almost impossible to find jackets, coats, skirts, dresses, blouses and knitwear in brighter/more unusual colours and it drives me insane!

HOW I would love a pencil skirt and a jacket in a gorgeous unique colour (patterned or solid)...

At least we have ink blue!

I've just about eliminated grey from my wardrobe. Since I look best in mid-tone and warm colors, grey is just not that flattering on me. I have one grey Eileen Fisher cascading cardigan and I hardly ever wear it.

I have also been backing away from black. It's still a good go-to basic for shirts and underlayers...and I do own several variations on the LBD for different occasions...but I tend to soften my black garments now with a scarf or jewelry. The starkness of pure black looks harsher against my skin now that I'm a little older, so it is definitely playing more of a supporting (rather than starring ) role in my wardrobe.

This fall/winter I've been intentionally moving my neutral wardrobe colors to gray & blue.
Black is too harsh next to my face these days. I'm trying to treat it as an accent color.
Plus, I really do love to see bright colors on others during the darkest days of the year.
