Rachy, and Gigi, you can now get a press designed for home sewers. It is available on Amazon and other places. I haven't used it, but the old Elnapress was wonderful. I would think if you used a pressing sheet between the boards and your clothes you wouldn't get the shine.

I love that Cheryl Mendelson book--which is kind of funny because I hate all kinds of housework! (And if you haven't read her novels, I recommend them, especially the first 2).

April, the Home Comforts book sounds like a great sleep aid. I will pick one up soon. :)

I hadn't thought about producing shine on the fabric. Gosh, another reason NOT to iron OR press. Don't want to damage the fabric. (I'm not an ironer in general, only if I absolutely have to.)

MRL, I did just iron a couple of shirts the other day, and I did press the collars and cuffs of a couple of button-downs, come to think of it.

As I understand it, pressing is sometimes called for in home ironing, but usually requires a press cloth (any thin, clean rag between the iron and the clothing) to avoid producing shine on your fabric.

I just read about this distinction in Cheryl Mendelson's encyclopedic Home Comforts: http://www.amazon.com/Home-Com.....IGHSRI_1_1? , which contains everything you could possibly ever want to know about many things you'd prefer not to know about. :)

Oh, I thought pressing was only done with a press, which is industrial. Not a home thing.

I iron. Pressings would probably result in burned or scorched fabric if I tried it.

Angie's post on ironing and fuzzylogic's follow-up got me thinking about ironing techniques. I have never been a big ironer and know very little about it. What I do know comes from the short time I spent doing some quilting, and in the quilting world, they make a distinction between "ironing" and "pressing." Ironing is when you move the iron back and forth over the material, whereas in pressing, you don't move the iron but just let it sit in one spot for a few seconds, then pick the iron up and move it to the next spot, etc. The idea behind the latter technique is that the material is less likely to get stretched out from the motion of the iron.

I realize that pressing is very important in quilting because we are dealing with simple squares of material that haven't been sewn into a block yet, so there's nothing to keep the shape intact if the iron is being moved around this way and that. On the other hand, clothing consists of fabric that is already sewn to other pieces of fabric, which creates more stability so there is less possibility of the fabric stretching out—so maybe ironing is OK.

I'm wondering what technique people on the forum use for ironing. Do you iron, or do you press?
