Thanks for all of the tips, everyone. I will definitely try them.

If you have a steamer you like, can you give specifics on the model?

Thanks

I've never been a good ironer. I use the steamer and wrinkle releaser unless I must break it out. I have to use the iron for sewing, and nearly always burn myself. Growing up, one of my friends had five children going to Catholic school at the same time. Her Italian Grandma was there once a week, and spent the better part of a day ironing all those white shirts!

i only have one: be careful! If your skin makes contact only for a second it leaves a nasty scar that does not seem to go away. heh. I have been branded by my own iron.

Actually i've had quite a few iron catastrophes...like finding stains with the iron which causes them to set...maybe i should give up and start dry cleaning lol? All the tips were very helpful though!

Another tip from my mom. When ironing cotton shirts, she will mist with water, pop into a plastic bag, and then put in the fridge for a couple minutes before ironing. It gives you a really crisp finish. I don't iron that much myself, but have done this and it does work.

I like the steamer option, especially for more delicate items. I'm scared to death of burning my stuff. I just got a new one that I haven't used yet. I'll have to let you know how it goes.

I hate ironing, so I try to do most of my dewrinkling by steamer. It works fairly well. I have a travel size steamer, which is just fine for how seldom I use it.

I absolutely hate ironing, with a passion. I try to avoid as much as possible.

During my first marriage, I would iron my now-ex's work shirts. I thought this is what a good wife was supposed to do. My now-ex-MIL was the Uber-Wife who did everything perfect (hospital corners on the bed, white glove tests on the baseboards, folding -NOT- rolling socks, etc), and I always had her in my head as I dutifully ironed those dang shirts.

Then one day she saw me ironing, and completely surprised me by saying, "Oh... you shouldn't bother with that!!! I always take FIL's shirts to the dry cleaner!! So much easier!!" That completely floored me.

Anyway... it's an anecdote that sticks in my head to this day...

My current DH - who does his own laundry - likes his shirts wrinkly but will iron when it's a black-tie affair.

Joy covered everything I do, but I used to iron when I was mad! I didn't use to like to iron either, until I realized it let me think or work out frustration (no worries if you're pressing away!). I can always find something that needs to be ironed in the house (once I ironed our cloth shower curtain after a bad day). I try to keep all the 'ironables' on my dryer, and I keep the iron in my laundry machine area. If I can iron as the washing machine or dryer is running I feel like I'm completing laundry instead of waiting for it to be done. There is something satisfying to me about having all the laundry done and ironed and neatly away in the closet!

I think Joy covered everything, very impressive! I just wanted to add that I usually don't bother with adding water to the iron but just use the spray bottle (for cotton and cotton blends only). I also use cheesecloth or cloth diaper (hee hee) for pressing cloth.
I personally don't like dry cleaning woven shirts because of the sheen some fabrics get from the press (I think it was discussed on the dry cleaning thread).

What's useful to me:
1. a good heavy steam iron. The weight, if you don't mind it, helps get the wrinkles out quickly.

2. a bottle of water with a fine spray nearby. For getting out "mistakes" where you've ironed in a crease or for when the steam alone isn't enough.

3. a clean smooth dish towel or pressing cloth. For use on delicate fabrics or anything that might turn shiny using the direct iron.

Method I use:

1. I turn most things, especially knits, inside out to press them.

2. Start with collars, then sleeves, then yokes and shoulders, and the body of the shirt/blouse last.

3. Pants I also iron working top to bottom.

4. Downey wrinkle releaser or Fabreeze used the same way is a great timesaver, especially on items that need a re-pressing.

5. Use the time to engage your mind by listening to a good book on tape or TV show that's a guilty pleasure or meditate or talking to a friend on speakerphone...anything that's pleasant and a treat for you in your busy schedule. You'll come to look forward to ironing.

The dry cleaning at home thread is inspiring this. What are your tips for ironing (quickly) ? I'm an amateur and I admit that I send my husband's and my woven shirts to be laundered because neither of us wants to iron them. (I wish there was just an ironing service because I don't mind washing them.)
