Joy, will look for sure. My problem is I'm really picky and don't want to just go, oh, something from Ireland, that I wouldn't use. I did plan to look at sweaters but bulky pullovers can overwhelm me so will have to see.

Shiny, I ordered this very lightweight Thermasilk after trying on in store but they did not have the color, it's whisper-thin, in part for my real life at home, not sure it's enough for this trip but if the merino turned out to be not right, I have something else. I think the brand itself comes in several weights. I might be the only person who would take as many underlayer options as real items !

Let me know how you like the Thermosilk. I got mine at LL Bean, petite sizing. The bottoms are fine, but the top is cut a bit too short. I'm looking to invest in another pair for home sleeping purposes, not just traveling.

Yes, buy scarves there. They have beautiful colors and I brought back several as gifts but forgot to keep one got myself. You will slso be tempted to buy one of the beautiful hand knit sweaters. Lots of these were on clearance in May.

Shiny, thanks for chiming in as the Queen of travel capsules!
I'm taking the merino underlayer top & pants for sure. Great minds, I had already ordered Thermasilk--kind of on a jag for things I would use in winter here anyway--and may take in order to have 2 warmth levels available. They are so light I wasn't sure they will work if temps don't go above 60, but you are right, indoors is often overheated, plus outdoors I'd be in motion, usually. I expect to basically live in some kind of pant underlayer and want 2 to rotate. Then I have to think will using some as PJ's be too much wear, but I don't want to take a third set, so some kind of multipurpose is needed.
I did plan on 2 scarves, could take more. Wool scarf might be something I'd buy there as souvenir, so might take one bulkier scarf (wear on plane) and pack much thinner ones, more for color, to save room.
The down jacket IS super-packable, that is why it's a dilemma. I wondered if it looks too... touristy-gearhead, though, or do I care.

My trip update post here might be helpful, although it'll probably be a bit warmer for you:
http://youlookfab.com/welookfa.....ually-wore

Merino wool - YES!

I'd also invest in silk long johns, if nothing more than to sleep in, since they take up so very little room, and if you get that Vitronix bag, you'll need the space. Also it can be drafty/chilly in the night and morning. Not to mention you can always layer them under clothes as needed. And rinse out in the sink.

Here's what I'd aim for:

1. Three bottoms, including the ones you wear on the plane. Wear the bulkiest on the plane. Which would be jeans, if you decide to take jeans. Because jeans take up a lot of room in the luggage.

2. Three cardigans. I would not bother with pullovers. I'd just take cardigans, because you can peel them on and off. Wear one on the plane, and pack two.

3. A range of tops -- don't forget to bring a short sleeve or sleeveless. I don't see any in your pics here. It may get hot one day.

4. Three pairs of shoes, two in bag and one on your feet. If you can't decide on that third pair, make them dressy/dressier, something you could wear if you go out to dinner. Could still be flat/small heel. Something that takes your casual slacks and elevates them a bit.

5. I'd opt for fleece over down, unless your down is super packable. Merino + fleece + windbreaker and you should be set.

6. Three scarves, one you wear on the plane, two in the bag. To add interest.

7. Save room with washable, quick dry undies.

8. A hat that works in windy weather.

You've got great advice here already. What a lovely trip you are embarking on. I think we might be in Ireland at almost the same time - I will be in Belfast Tuesday 28 and then Dublin Wed-Thur 29-30. It's a work trip with very little spare time, unfortunately, so I won't experience much of Ireland.

So good to here input from more experienced hear folks!
I've been trying to see what things I'd most want for my at- home lifestyle or even " where I might be heading" , and overlap that with the trip needs.

But I might have somd conflicts or choices!
1) I decided not to take the LLB parka as it has always been way too big in fit and also no way will it fit in any tote bag. . I found a Marmot style I love and serves as shelll layer. BUT the color I want is a pale gray, because it's neutral but at home I'd wear this a lot in mid-season weather( as wind she'll as well as light rain or maybe walking at dusk, so I love the light color. Question is, is that dumb for travel?
Next up is, I found Arc'Teryx stuffable down jacket on sale- maybe it found me- and for me, the down fits my usual needs, and is a great solution for my climate and for travel to family wher temps vary during trips- so not targeting for Ireland only- in fact I thought of not cutting tags/ not taking so as to not get trip- goggles, and be sure. This brand has unusual dual fill with poly in the shoulders and cuffs. So now my dilemma there is whether even to take that on trip, or to add fleece, or just wooly layers + shell.

Back to say that I took 3 pair of shoes...black patent athletic flats that could take the cobblestones and still look a bit dressy, Born sneakers and waterproof lined ankle boots in grey suede. I hardly ever wore anything but the boots, even to go out, and Smart Wool socks. Love them.
I second Sandy on the merino shirts. My son who travels a lot swears by them even for tropical trips. They are pricey but worth it.
I only wore my down jacket under an REI waterproof coat, and usually a sweatshirt and tee under that...in May.

I'm delighted that we're merino twins In windy damp conditions, my down jackets don't keep me warm enough because they absorb some moisture and get cold spots. My 5 year old nano puff synthetic stays cozy warm even if wet, and if the weather worsens I can layer it with ease. Try the synthetic jacket for travel. The color selection isn't large but it's a solid travel piece that you'll use for years (and be warm!).

I'm nodding at everyone's advice. The only thing I'd add if you have to choose between fleece versus down for warmth (assuming you can't bring both) is that down if it gets soaked is useless. Fleece and wool will continue to insulate and keep you warm even if they get wet. This might not be an issue with light hiking -- but if you don't have cover within an hour can be really important. Also moisture wicking liner socks can help if your shoes aren't 100% waterproof, or at least keep you comfy until you have a chance to change --- or if water goes in the top of your boot.

I just lost a long post...grr.
We took a bus tour of Ireland a year and a half ago in August so different than yours. The weather was beautiful the whole time but ran the gamut. Up and out at six home to bed at two with very full days.
The thing I wore most and could have left behind many items was my fleece lined Marks rain jacket and a boiled wool blazer. Wore these every single day with a short or long sleeve t-shirt of cotton, silk or bamboo underneath. Sometimes I had other things but this was the uniform with a modal infinity scarf. At some part of every day one or both of these was on. Never used my umbrella and only wore my hat once. But the hair...lol. I had mine cut a few weeks before leaving and this was the biggest mistake I made. In the end I pulled it back by day and wore it loose in the evening.
I brought three pairs of shoes and only used the sneakers because I thought they were a better option for the day but in the end would have been better off in another pair. Newbuck lace ups with a very thin sole. I sprayed them to death before we left and they were perfect as on uneven terrain I like to feel the earth under my feet for stability. Before going out for dinner I slipped inrto my clogs and used them exclusively in the hotel room. A nice break for your feet after a long day walking. We only did one thing similar to a hike though (famine walk).
On that walk it was misty, dewy, dense thick air, rain, the most beautiful sunny warm day, cold and windy, etc. Everything but snow. Luckily we slipped into shelter before the horizontal rain that soaked everyone else.
I don`t wear jeans so didn`t bring any but they would be fine everywhere but the most exclusive restaurants.
I used a smallish messenger bag made out of nylon (M.E.C.) and brought along a nylon tote with a zip closing. Both were perfect.
One thing I like to do is bring a thin cotton placemat from home and put it in the hotel room. Whenever entering I put all my possessions on it and never left anything behind. My husband on the other hand...
Have a wonderful time. The scenery, history, artifacts, castle hotels, arts, etc are all fabulous but the people are amazing. Can`t imagine being invited home to meet the wife by a taxi driver here at home.<br>One day it was very cold and we happened to be at the Cliffs of Mohr. Stole my husband`s fleece that day....

SandyG, you are clairvoyant!
I went to re-visit my possible waterproof hiking shoes at our local hiking store and found a brand I liked even better and fit better than the Oboz--they look a bit more like a regular trainer in a dark gray and I can see using them a lot just as an everyday walking/hiking shoe. Then discovered merino long underwear--bottoms and crewneck top! I got the lightest weight, as being something i would wear several months of the year even with work trousers. I could forego the top in favor of other tops I have, but it is soooo lightweight I could not resist ( I sized up enough for it to look like a thin T, not undergarment). I did not look for tank; had not considered that! Also had found on the sale aisle a featherweight down jacket/stuff sack in a berry color I usually can't find. Have not even had a chance yet to try these on with things at home, so will not keep if they don't pass the home-mirror test.
I'm a little stumped about whether to make a huge effort to get an actual flat walking waterproof leather ankle boot, or just take another pair of walking shoes and reckon they might get damp and need to dry out. I would need super-comfortable and not too stompy, something lighter weight than a Doc, but clearly casual, and I may have waited too late to try enough by mail.

I usually freeze under 70 degrees and these are workhorses for me. Check out merino tees and a merino camisole, which are far cozier than silk or synthetics, pack like a dream and wash/dry overnight if needed. You can wear them all week without odor. and they don't look like gear.

A Patagonia nano puff pullover or jacket weighs less than a pound and works in 40-65 degree weather as my outer layer for dog walks and rainy travel. Lightweight, windproof, warm, water resistant, easily tied around your waist or stuffed into a pack when the weather turns warm -- the perfect travel piece that serves as a hiking fleece, sweatshirt or jacket, or airplane blanket or pillow. I love love love mine!

I also have a cashmere hoodie I loke a lot, but wondered if it adds even more casual vibe and not any wind/waterproof action to justify.

This input is so helpful. I run cold yet had thought I was layering enough. Now I think I should up the ante there. I have some fleece items. I gave my featherweight down jacket to DD who is there now because the color suited her better and I thoght one day I'd get another ! I'm wondering if I should work on one warmer pants option or just plan on the longjohn concept.

Some of my favourite colours! would add a no iron white shirt type option that can pop a pretty necklace and shiny earrings, for looking a bit crisper for dinners, or under a sweater. Echo Joy's suggestions of light down jacket or sweater with lovely cashmere beanie, I often keep hat, light wool gloves, socks and a stuffable silk scarf in my coat pockets or bag or pack. Works on the plane, too.
Wind and waterproof outer coverings essential next to sea. Waterproof gaiters for legs that keep your pants from being soaked by bushes are dorky but very useful items for hiking, easy to pack.
Wonderful that you are walking and getting out of cars.

I spent 3 weeks there in October and think your capsule is great! It's not too dark at all. Are you taking gloves? High winds in areas can make those necessary. My husband and I are planning a trip next Summer with our two youngest.... We just have to go back,we can't stop dreaming of it! Have a wonderful time.

Your capsule is looking good, and you seem to have plenty of options for variable weather. I would definitely go with the waterproof boots and trousers; there's nothing worse than wet feet and legs when hiking. Lightweight rain-pants pack down to nothing so you've nothing to lose by taking them along.

My DD spent a semester abroad in Irelad last year starting in May. It was colder and windier feeling than she anticipated but she was on the coast. Her packing list included long underwear, lightweight down, and polar fleece. She loved it there, so enjoy your trip, but I would be prepared to feel colder than the actual outdoor temperature due to windchill.

Last year at this time I was preparing for a mid May trip to Ireland. My most valuable piece was a light weight down zip front jacket that fit into it's own small pouch. I wore it alone on nice days and under a waterproof coat on colder day, often with a sweatshirt and more layered underneath.
I wore Le Cannadienne ankle boots that are waterproof almost every day although I took other shoes. It is often chilly, wet and windy. I got lots of use out of a thin cashmere beanie that stayed on in the wind. People dressed up more than I'd expected for dinner and pubs, even in small towns...skirts or trousers and nice tops and shoes. But you will fit in with tourists in jeans. We bought umbrellas there and used them a lot in Dublin. Other places were often too windy.
I wish we were going again this May. You will have a wonderful time. Are you taking the trains? If so, book ahead on-line. Much less expensive and sometimes impossible at small stations where you can't find anyone to help.

I live in Dublin. Weather is very changeable so raincoat and layers are a great idea. You can buy waterproof wellies very cheaply in Dunnes Stores if u need them. But I don't think they will be necessary as it's not that wet. A fleece comes in handy especially for hiking.

Thanks, Carole! Thank you, Firecracker! I agree, for a this dhort of a trip I am working on everything going with everything, not just for variety but is something got dirty, the show goes on.
The shoes are a little difficult for me because of warnings for wet weather , so the Gortex( or similar) hikers might qualify for every day., not hikes only. I thought I might have got some more water resistant " real" shoes or boots, but somehow that escaped me -- my comfort criteria for travel and not being able to run bsck home are higher than even my long work days!

Sounds like a great trip! I spent a week in Ireland in September a couple of years ago, and I packed similarly. I did not take a skirt. I took three pairs of pants, 3 or 4 tops, and 3 toppers, plus several camisoles and a couple of scarves. The capsule worked, because every single top, topper, and pair of pants was inter-mixable with everything else. That was so hard to figure out, but it definitely pays off!
After heavily debating my coat options, I went with a packable raincoat with no liner, and with my layering options, it worked just fine. I brought two pairs of shoes--oxfords (which turned out not to be that comfortable) and a street sneaker. I wore the latter mostly. I'd say if your hiking pants go with the hiking shoes, no need for other pants to go with them. You can just wear the hiking pants when you want to wear the hiking shoes. As long as the other shoes are good for sightseeing-type walking, you'll be good to go!
Hope you have a great time.
