Cross your fingers for us, Rachylou! We might get to hop planes across the Atlantic and back in a couple weeks here—not sure yet...
And yes, we would wear KN-95/PPE2 masks, keep our distance, take tests & isolate until getting results, etc.

Thanks Janet! I prefer the first scarf to the second, but whichever one you mean, you’re right about the hat. It was a bit of an impulse buy, with YLF support. Oops. I should probably give it away now, so someone who it fits can wear it all winter. I caught the part about matchy-matchy complements when it came out, think 2 elements are the most I’m likely to want to match like that. The part about a lighter color with the dark heavy jacket is your own genius.

Here is the post I referenced: https://youlookfab.com/2020/11.....or-winter/

That scarf is really nice! Perhaps look for a new hat in a style that you prefer to go with a color in the scarf?

Liesbeth, it sounds to me like you, Janet, and Cardiff are all in agreement that there is sweetness in that outfit; the difference is if that’s a good thing or not. I’m leaning towards your & Janet’s response, that I should try a top that’s longer and not so sweet.

Janet, I don’t recall that post, will look for it. Thanks for mentioning it. My first thought at what you said is this scarf that I wore with the jacket in the 90s, and this hat I got last year but always find too cloying to actually wear. Then there’s this huge (1x2m) very thin scarf a friend gave me to wear as my first hijab. I pulled the jacket down to show the scarf, wouldn’t walk around like that.

Some thoughts:

- I really like the jeans and sweater in 2 — the fits are great!
- I think you wear a moto well. If you’d like a suggestion for lightening the vibe of it, my approach to wearing heavy, masculine, oversized jackets like this is to include a lighter or beautiful colored complement the way Angie described recently. How about hat/scarf/gloves (or some combination thereof) in a raspberry or other berry color? I can see this tactic working really well for you with a carefully chosen patterned scarf with some favorite colors in it. Good for warmth and style!
- You wear fun patterned leggings well. I like the way you kept everything else in that outfit simple.
- I’m not keen on the proportions in 7. Both the sweater and skirt are short, which gives a bit of impression that you’re in juniors clothes that are just not cut for someone with your height. If you’re going with a short skirt, I’d suggest a slightly longer top with a bit more refined or modern vibe. I feel like the sweet cropped cardigan clashes in mood too much.

Just going to chime in with my opinion on 'what is too sweet'. I personally think 7 is too sweet for you whereas I love 8 because it juxtaposes with the oversized leather jacket, creating something very hipster chic imo. In 7 it's mainly the cardigan that feels too delicate and classic. Again, my opinion, I think Cardiffgirl said just the opposite ;-).

Synne, challenge accepted. My next “WIW” post will have long tops and toppers, and the widest legged pants I have. Flowing dresses and wide-legged pants sound cold, but I apparently have the appropriate base layers, since I can wear minis and not freeze.

Those lace up black boots are very current, you should wear them with everything! You seem to stick to your tried and true favorite silhouettes of short skirts and cropped jackets. You suit that style well, but as for your time traveller comment, how about trying longer jackets and coats, wider pants, more flowy skirts? That would make your style more 2020 IMO. A suggestion for an outfit idea could be the black oversized moto over a long flowy dress, with the black boots. What do you think?

#3 is a more masculine look, I like it because of the oversized fit of the leather jacket, which is current to my eye. I agree that it would work better with your hair down. #5 and 6 - a good combination of colors, pale pink pants is not an easy thing to style but works fine here with a berry puffer, looks fresh.
#8 is how I think a short skirt might work - by wearing it with a leather jacket, like you did, to add an edge.

I think you look great in your red and burgundy tones - #5 & 6 is my favourite. I really like the graphic look of #12 & 13 and prefer your leather jacket worn with a tunic and leggings to #3. As Lisa says, #3 looks more masculine than your usual looks, but I think you hair out would change that and the addition of your red scarf and boots would lift it.

You have beautiful hair, I loved the Cleopatra haircut you had if you are thinking of changing it up.

Irina, you just made me laugh! Unsmiling and somber is not how you come across here—more like caring and careful. But I am *glad* to hear you like the way I’ve styled that skirt, because I know the skirt length isn’t your favorite. But can I ask you again which pix you like? 5 & 6 are the pink pants and 3 is the jeans with the moto jacket. One thing I like about Germany is that in the US, I have RBF, but no one thinks that here—it’s a common (non)expression, lol.

Cat2, thanks so much. I see in the photo that the fluffy yarn trim on the hat looks kind of clumpy; is that what you’re noticing?

Cardiff, sounds like i’m moving the right way—the top row of that first pic never would have happened a couple years ago. How far in that direction do you think I can be before people expect me to bring them milk and cookies? The jeans and moto may be too far in the opposite extreme, but what’s too in the softness and feminine direction? Thanks for the compliment on my hair. As long as it’s chilly out, I wear it down. I may pull it back, but I need its warmth around my neck!

LisaP, good point about the hair and the “softness”. While I do want to keep it long, at least for a few months, I ought to be able to find a different long cut that will work better for me (when salons reopen—they just Covid-closed again here). That might indeed work better than the jacket without going to the extreme. Thanks for commenting.

I see the black moto as being out of place here . It’s not fitting well, and doesn’t really do anything for you other than evoke a hyper-masculine vibe , which doesn’t seem quite you . While I’m not a fan of short skirts or shorts , they are obviously part of your look and you are styling them well here . I do feel an updated hair look would go a long way towards eliminating that “ old lady in her soft rose tones “ - or whatever you wrote above . It would ensure, too , that the more youthful and older pieces look intentionally styled for the present day .

Thanks Kathie! I especially appreciate you noticing that I’m working on how to wear my essential elements, like the minis, in ways that work for people who have had a hard time with them. The forum has been invaluable for that kind of advice! Your comment felt really good—thank you.

ETA, it really is time to do something about those jeans. I just looked back at my thread about them a little while ago. I thought then that people were humoring me. Now i read it that they were agreeing for real and Angie did say to try a smaller size.

Your time on the forum has really paid off! These are all great. 2 is a nice combo of old and new. The jeans might be a smidge large, but the slouchy look works. 5-6 looks the most modern, but it’s not super obvious. 7-8 are your trademark shorter skirts, and I love how you’re wearing them with leggings and tall boots. This is the type of look that I think is the most “you,” and where it shows that you’ve done the work to figure out pieces that are visually coherent, but still reflect your quirky style. 10/11 and 12/13 are some great combinations of texture, pattern, and color. Also, your hair looks great worn down!

My second week of (mostly) OBGs. One of these doesn’t include any items more than five years old. Once again, it’s taken me more than a week to put together a week’s worth of outfits, because of how I live/dress. All of these were worn around the neighborhood, or maybe shopping. These OBG posts are the first times I’ve looked at my WIWs together. I notice several things:

* I really do wear a lot of old stuff. I hope I do it in ways that look current, not like a time traveler. Please correct me if that’s not right. Did the “all new” (everything under 5 years old) outfit jump out at you?

* I wear heels a lot more than I realize! In my mind, I wear flat shoes, but in reality, it looks like I wear ~2” heels a lot, at least in winter. Quelle horreur!

* there is a real difference between theory (what I think I’m going to wear) and practice (what I actually have on when I’m out & about with all the accessories).

* I tend towards accessory complements that coordinate in a way that isn’t matchy-matchy: black cap with scarf that has black in paisley; cap & mittens in cream tie in with the cream-colored bag that has red in the strap, which ties in with boots & jacket; black in the red&black strap ties in with black jacket, cap, and boots; fur on the vest ties in with my hair and the cream of the bag.

* the warm, tonal dressing I sought with berry colors has become reflexive and is edging into pink. That’s good, because I, myself, can come off as sharp. I tend towards irony and “analytical” thinking. That’s what comes easiest to me, but for people who don’t like them or who they aren’t natural to, they often feel dofficult, maybe even like an intentional challenge, so softening this with my look is good. Otoh, #10 shows a danger I need to avoid—that posture is soft & wishy-washy. I do not want to come off as someone’s stereotype of the sweet old lady in soft rosy shades. That’s why I juxtapose the pink with harder elements like the moto & combat boots, or the bright red. I’d love to hear your thoughts on this. Does the softening/not too soft strategy work, or do they cancel each other out?

The Outfits
2-4 Soft Surroundings hi-lo sweater, ca 2012. Bought in Florida, but too warm to wear there.
Ann Taylor curvy fit jeans 2010, same story as the sweater.
Uniqlo heat tech thermal 2019 peeks out at neck, wrists.
OG moto jacket—long story I’ll tell in another post. Pre 1984.
Liz Claiborne boots 2003
Paisley scarf given to me by dear family friend when I was in high school or college—came in handy when I realized I’d forgotten my mask!
Black gloves & boucle cap—probably acquired 2010-18.
This outfit reminded me that it really is time to pull the trigger on a longer jacket, after collecting finds for the last couple years.

5-6 Pink NYDJ Jeans 2018
Rough edge sweatshirt ca 2017
Ginger T-neck ca 2017 (These two were Florida “winter” purchases that worked there, in one of my first YLF lessons—the sweatshirt is thin and the T-neck is sleeveless)
Red puffer 2018
Red suede ankle boots 2019
LeSak ca 2018
14 late add—Hat & mittens I took off for “it’s windy!” pix & forgot to put back on for y’all.

7-9 & 15 Uniqlo Airism leggings 2020
Urban Outfitters ruffle on my butt ca 2016. Another Florida purchase that couldn’t be worn there, because it requires leggings or tights, which are too hot.
Ann Taylor cotton granny cardi ca 2017. A sweater I could wear in Florida—yay! But I enjoy this cut in a tongue-and-cheek way. I hope people I encounter get the humor.
Uniqlo heat tech top 2019
OG black moto as above
Combat boots 1996
Ulta headband 2017
Mohair scarf, mid ‘80s, gift from my grandma
LeSak as above
Blue suede gloves Laimböck 2020 (Getting in my cobalt & blue combo!)
Blue readers from drug store—I go through them terribly quickly

10-11 Ann Taylor curvy fit jeans as above
Hollister vest as above
LeSak as above
Rough edge sweatshirt as above
Ginger T-neck as above
Born oxfords ca 2017
Yep, I really am all about the remix
Went out with one bag, returned with two—grocery store has had these simple cotton totes for ages; I had noted them for when one of our others dies. They are now restocking with green, so of course I had to pick up the last berry one. (It also matches the circles under my eyes, which is why I usually wear concealer, sigh).

12-13 Hannah Andersson black sweatshirt dress/tunic ca 2008
Hue leggings ca 2016 when I was too big for them. One of quite a few black-and-white patterned pieces that snuck into my closet and made a capsule when I wasn’t looking.
Liz Claiborne tall boots 2003
Creme scarf knit for me by my mother, ca 2015
LL Bean espresso bomber jacket ca 1992
LeSak bag and random black gloves as above
I like the look of the open jacket much better than the horizontal blocks when it’s zipped up, but warmth won, no contest, when I was outside.

Thanks for looking! As always, I appreciate comments on what works, what doesn’t, possible improvements, and what could be set aside for now—or forever.
