An older woman marched up to me after church when I was about 13, grabbed me by the arm and looking intensely into my eyes said "Don't you EVER tan your skin!" I was (still am) very, very pale and had worn a shirt that showed a little bit of my shoulders and back that day. That has always stuck with me and aside from a summer as a lifeguard (the whitest life guard ever) I stayed out of the sun.

From my mom:
1. quality shoes are a must, especially growing little feet. So my kids wear stride rite mostly.
2. Fashion trends marches forward just like time. Even if history repeats itself, it's never the exact same 2nd time around.

Love this thread! Such wise Mums you had and have.

I can't begin to list the style advice from my late Mum, but top of the list is good skincare, good posture, and don't swear.

These are wonderful.

It's funny, my mum always loved clothes and looking fabulous, but interestingly, she never really gave me any advice. I'm almost sad to realise this, but then it occurred to me that just by observing her, I was absorbing (although until recently ignoring) some lessons about style and looking good. So, without further ado, here are mine:

*It is better to buy one quality item that looks amazing, you will wear to bits and will last, than 10 cheaper and inferior items of clothing which will sit in your closet unworn or perish after the second washing;
*You should tailor clothes to properly fit.  (Sad to say that I'm only realising this now.  My mum could sew, so she would always alter pants/skirts etc to fit properly (she was only 5'1");
*Always leave the house with your hair looking nice. I think about it now and I think to myself "how on earth did she do it?!". I honestly cannot recall her going out with mussed up hair.

When I think about it, she certainly set a very high bar - thanks mum!

I received ZERO advice, so am fumbling along learning most of this now, but am trying to already provide some little pearls of wisdom to my girls... I hope!

Thanks for sharing - I'm taking some of this onboard as of NOW!

From my Mum - where sunscreen and don't smoke! My Mum has lovely skin and says that at her age (60) those who have smoked look a good 5-10 years older than those who haven't.

From my Grandmother - good quality leather shoes are a necessity! All through university my Nana gave me money to buy shoes (one summer pair and one winter pair) - they had to be leather and she had to give them the Nana seal of approval! She also bought my wedding shoes.

The first thing that comes to mind is the shoes advice from my dad. Never compromise on the quality of the shoes and don't hesitate to pay a good price once you find the pair that is comfortable. And consider buying two pairs of some models (the ones likely to become wardrobe workhorses).

One more thing, on the note of moisturizing. Don't laugh please. The electrician that fixes our appliances has amazing skin. He's a 60-years-old guy passionate about motorcycles, with a complexion that any woman of his age should envy him on. Why? He's been moisturizing from the age of 16. He's been laughed at by his friends, but now he has the last laugh :).

Even though Mom and I have an odd relationship when it comes to my style, she's given me a great deal of sterling advice over the years.
1. Just because it looks good on X doesn't mean it will look good on you. Shop for your body type
2. You can't get hung up on the size on a tag...buy what looks best on you
3. Bra fittings are essential (she took me for my first professional one when I was 13, and I thank her every day)
4. Makeup will do more long-term harm than short-term good. She has absolutely flawless, incredible skin that fully justifies her words, and she's made me a makeup minimalist in the hopes that I'll be in the same boat at her age.

My dad is the one who always encouraged risk-taking. In kindergarten, I was horrified at his suggestion to try plaid with stripes -- now pattern-mixing is everywhere! He also told me that, if you find something really cool, buy it then and there, because it will be gone later. I know I've messed that last one up a time or two!

I really haven't gotten advice like this from my mother, as she is absolutely not interested in fashion or style in any way. Now, it's more like she asking me for advice! And I mean I'm not the expert either. My sister is just beginning to care about clothes (she's 12) and I hope I can help her a little bit because I know my mum can't.

But I got some good advice from my grandma on how I should care about my hair. She had coarse, frizzy hair like me in her youth and told me how I should care for it when my hairtype changed with puberty. No brushing, only combing with a wide tooth comb. No blowdrying, but plopping instead and so on.

From my mother: Buy outfits, rather than single pieces so you don't end up with closet orphans. For example, I just received a care package from home. My mother sent me a really cute, chunky, cozy, winter sweater and the black, cotton turtleneck to wear it with. Even though the second one is a basic item that I can clearly buy here on my own, this is how she shops. I don't always follow her advice and end up regretting it, especially with skirts.

From my sister: Don't hesitate to send a chunk of money on accessories (particularly scarves), they make up the outfit.

The two advice above also usually go together. When you buy a nice top and see scarf
or necklace to complement it, buy them together!

From my mom: Stay out of the sun (or, in later years, wear lots of sunscreen). Indulge in good skin care, and treat your throat just as you treat your face. Excellent posture improves any outfit. Never leave the house without lipstick and earrings.

From my dad (!!): Always wear a spot of color near the face in business contexts, as it keeps clients and colleagues focused on your face. This is why men wear neckties, he says.

From a graduate adviser: Wear heeled boots for teaching and presentations--it makes you feel powerful (it really does!).

Skirts and dresses rather than pants to show off good legs

Lessons I've learned from my mom:

- get fitted for bras (her sister worked in the lingerie department at Nordstrom for a couple decades)
- wear sunscreen ALL THE TIME
- visit the dermatologist regularly
- don't wear shoes that will mess up your feet (she has plantar fasciitis)
- different people look good in different colors
- I look better with bangs (just not with the blunt bangs I had during my childhood), and when my hair has some volume to it
- investment pieces are worth it
- don't wait for the salesperson to come to you, ask for help when you need it

While neither my mother nor my grandmothers are/were particularly interested in fashion and style, they always conveyed the message that modest attire is appropriate for all occasions. I'm happy to say modesty has become a part of my own fashion persona, and I've rarely felt uncomfortable for having revealed too much at an inappropriate place/time.

The best beauty advice I received was from my mom, who has had gray hair as long as I can remember: "Don't let your hair go gray! It makes you look old!"

I had my hair gray for a couple of years and you know what? Mom was right!

What is the best fashion advice you've received from the generation older than you?

Here are some gems that I've received:

1. Posture:
I recently asked my mom what things she's glad she did for her looks when she was my age. The first of her thoughtful responses was that she was glad she found ways to keep her upper back from calcifying in a forward slope. For her, these measures have included limited yoga and exercise, but mostly relaxation techniques (particularly Trager massage) and adjustments to posture.

2. Color:
In the first few months after I started my first "real" job, the receptionist at my office, 25 years my senior, gave me some really quality advice on appearance. At the time, my professional wardrobe was quite limited and I wore mostly brown and black. Whenever I did wear color, though, she always complimented me and explained how color draws attention to the face and makes a woman look younger. I have moved jobs since then, but have never forgotten that essential advice!

3. Big Jewelry
This is a piece of advice whose source I don't actually remember, although I usually attribute it to my ex-mother-in-law who was substantial in both size and presence. The advice is, "Big Jewelry for All Women, because small jewelry makes small women look smaller and big women look bigger." I have taken this one to heart!

What advice would you like to share?
