Thanks for the info on those companies, Joyce.

Kari, I enjoyed the humor of that article..."Raw denim is expensive and uncomfortable and I love it". :)

I did APC's unisex jeans quite a few years ago now...ten?...and the denim was gorgeous. It is a commitment and I was into it at the time...and thinner. I still love raw denim but I had to find styles cut more generously for my body and I just like the wider style now. In the last four years I've purchased two from Chimala, the Monroe cut and the Wide Tapered Cut, both raw. Really nice denim too. Pricier than APC's but can be found on sale.

Joy, yes, I remember those days of wearing men's Levi's 501 "shrink to fit"'s...and clogs!

I'm not sure why artisanal jeans is more targeted towards men. Probably it is expected they are more inclined towards the rugged (initially) and worn in look?
I no longer have patience with breaking things in. Gotta be comfortable!
@jess: I have worn jeans by the brand Nudie which was unisex (though really a man's brand with some styles that worked for some women). I do think for women with curves, men's jeans will not easily fit or look flattering.

When women and girls first started wearing jeans back in the ‘60’s, they had to buy from the men’s and boys departments. My first were a pair of men’s tan cords with a man’s suede leather belt. They were often worn with hacked men’s sweatshirts worn inside out and high- topped sneakers or clogs. Actually it was a warm cozy outfit compared to a mini length frock.
I bet women are snapping up these artisanal jeans.

This is all fascinating. I’m not sure how I feel. Real denim gives me indigestion.

I remember how well the Levis 501 worked for all genders back in the '90s. They looked VERY different on people though.

Thanks for the link, Kari. It is a great read. It reminded me of my first pair of Levi’s as a teenager. They were tough to break in but once you did, they were really comfortable. It took a while to get rid of the extra indigo dye.
I agree about the back rise. It should be longer than the front so that the derrière fits properly but it is hard to find that type of cut. I don’t know what they are thinking. Just that detail would go a long way in the good fit department.
The widths and the lengths are also a problem to find what people need.
There is room for improvement in the garment industry for sure.

I’ve read about that and looked into it - if you google raw denim there are some folks who are very into high end, 100% denim jeans for achieving a great fit by breaking them in to your body, but:
- there are very few options for folks with bigger hips/butt and a smaller waist (aka “women’s cut”) vs. a straight “men’s cut”
- What “women’s cut” options exist seem to top out at a 33” waist or even smaller; for example, some stop at 29”.

I cannot find anything close to fitting me if I wanted to try such things. I’ve read that buying large and getting it tailored at the waist often doesn’t fix the fit issues as the rise will be too short in back.

Jeans and pants are hard to fit in ladies’ styles, at least for me. I tried men’s jeans ages ago and they were cut straight making the fit much worse. Other types of garments may be easier, gender neutral fits. Nordstrom.com was showing some on their front page. They are still fringe though.

This just gave me a thought, why there is no unisex jeans or more unisex clothing made yet? Fashion and what’s gender acceptable has come a long way, there’s got to be a way to make unisex clothing that fits both genders equally as good.

The inseams stop at 33” in the ones I saw, not long enough for my guys, but the concept is interesting.
