Those are interesting thoughts. I can really appreciate the idea of a "rest" area. I got the idea originally from FlyLady, who says to put the stuff to donate into a box, and if you haven't looked at it in a while (a year at most), you'll never miss it.

I had a very freeing moment while reading your post. For about two years I have been saving two big bags of clothes that don't fit anymore due to weight gain. For the next six months I am in a very healthy mode, hence if I don't fit in those clothes by July I never will. So I just realized that by July, fit or don't fit, come hell or high water, those clothes will not be in limbo anymore. They'll either be in active rotation or donated to the Salvation Army! So thanks for inspiring that insight for me!

Great insights, Mander. I agree with those who pass things on. But I also use a holding zone for items that are not in season. It helps me stay clear on what is really wearable in my closet at any given time and makes it easier to get dressed.

I agree with Mo. It is much better that someone else loves them than for them to torture me

Mander, coincidentally, I started this "holding zone" idea last month. So far, I am very happy with it. Though I have gone digging for a pair of pants that I didn't think I would wear. If you have the space, this is just a great way to focus.

I actually implemented the Vivienne Files "common wardrobe" concept. As a SAHM, this was really easy and then I rotated in 4 items at a time, everything else was packed in zippered, cotton cubes that protect the clothes but don't let in moths or "critters". It is really working well for me...for all of about 6 weeks, hahaha. I have TONS of accessories, but they don't overwhelm me like clothing for some reason, so I did my clothes and pocketbooks.

I also allocated my blazers, of which I have too many for my lifestyle. Some are now to be used only in Spring or Fall or Winter. So I am really looking forward to wearing two of my faves come April 1. I am actually excited about it.

I am looking forward to the end of March when I pull out the "spring" clothes. I am trying a strict timeline every 3 months. I am hoping to wear all the clothes I love in 3 month increments.

Thank you so much for sharing this.

I agree. I kept clothes that were too small, and i was glad i had after i lost weight, but only those I really loved, and I put them in a bin in the back of the closet. There was no way I wanted them in the front mixed in with the clothes I could wear at the time. Same with too big clothes, now - I'm keeping a few but they are not front and center to confuse and frustrate me.

I like the idea of a holding zone for non fit related issues too. Sometimes you wear something a lot and then get sick of it, but put away for a while and you may find that it interests you after a break.

I had 2 pair of jeans that fit, but barely, around my first year here at YLF. One was given to me by a member, and I eventually gave them to a coworker last year. The other I gave to a member here who turned them into shorts and got plenty of wear out of them. Both donations felt good. Sure, I could squeeze myself into both pairs, but barely sit down, and only at my slimmest moments. Not worth it! Better to have what fits you great, and makes you feel great, hanging around in the closet. Let others enjoy those items instead of having them torture you!
I like the idea of separating what you love from 'the rest' as a way to see what's worth keeping in one's closet. I think I sort of do this when I move here to FL and can only take so much with me.

I like the holding zone/rest basket concept a lot. For me, it usually ends up being the waypoint on the way to the Goodwill, or my niece's closet.

You're right about the clothes that don't fit. I have a pair of jeans that I am resisting letting go, even though they are tighter than I would like -- I think I'm up a few post-holiday pounds, but these were close-fitting even on my best days. I should put them in the holding zone.

I came across this post on a winter wardrobe on the Project 333 website which had a couple of tips in the comments that I found interesting:

Michelle says:
... The last thing I wanted to say was that I have always lived with overflowing closets. I don’t over buy, but I never get rid of anything. It’s always a drag to get dressed. Trying to start Project 333, I started off by pulling out anything strictly for summer or things like my xmas sweater, plus stuff that doesn’t fit but I don’t want to get rid of it. I know I need to deal with those later, but I found that after I pulled half my stuff out and put it in tubs, I was left with basically my most favorite clothes and my least favorite clothes. It suddenly became easy to grab things I didn’t want to keep and toss them in a giveaway box. ...

Rinna says:
I keep a basket near my clothes rack, where I put any item of clothing that feels even a little boring or hasn’t gotten used in a month or so. I call it “the rest basket”, where those clothes can take a little rest. I think it’s better to hide them from view, than look at them every morning and allow the bored-ness grow stronger. When I dig then out again, they feel somehow refreshed (or if they don’t, then it’s time to let go of them).

C. Emerson says:
... When I was first packing all the clothes not currently in rotation I separated it out into too small clothes, and likely to be donated clothes. I’m giving myself six months before the first donation time. For every week that I don’t stick to my goal of eating and living more healthy (and naturally shrinking in the process), one item goes from the too small box to the donation box. I don’t know exactly how it will turn out just yet, but I find its surprisingly freeing, knowing that when I hit my donation time either I will be close to fitting in to most of these clothes and they might show up in next quarter’s rotation… or… that somewhere along the way life became more important than a size, and I’m willing to let go of them.

I like these approaches to separating out what is working from what isn't, and the various ways of creating a "holding zone" and then weeding it out. The last one in particular intrigues me -- if a person has a goal of changing their health habits and hoping to lose weight, it can be a good motivator to have a system for getting rid of the physical items that don't fit. Provided, of course, that you can see it as a gift of liberation (and an acknowledgement that your actual life is more important than your size) and not a punishment for failure to lose weight.

For me, I am slowly realizing that the drive to keep clothes that are now too small is truly a way of punishing myself for being fat and gaining weight. At the same time I tend to see getting rid of things that don't fit as taking things away that I don't deserve, sort of how you might take a child's toys away if they don't keep their room clean. It would be nice to shift my perspective so that I can see getting rid of things as a process of setting myself free instead of depriving myself.
