I enjoyed the article too. Thanks for sharing. Lots of wisdom and insight. What a pretty lady. Nice to look at - LOVELY smile - and a Killer gorgeous outfit too.

"High-low" is a great strategy, and one I adopt myself. Unlike Lisa Tant, I'll spend a chunk of money on a "quirky colour" because our colours are always in style and they make me happy. I am much happier wearing a chatreuse and tomato red coat then I am wearing a black one. A black coat is an orphan for my style.

Sterling, I understand how the word investment is used incorrectly in the fashion and style world.

Style Fan, Shevia, Deborah, Greyscale, and Rachylou -- thank for you trying to understand my point.

I am in total agreement with social capital (wish I had thought of that particular term) and an item being totally "worth it." I do get it, but sometimes the way "investment dressing/buying" is presented in blogs and fashion articles seems to be so misleading. Like I said, it is the wording that is the pet peeve, not necessarily the concept itself.

I did "invest" in two navy blue suits (one for winter; one for summer). I got the jobs I interviewed for and never wore those suits again. But they certainly served their purpose and could be defined as an investment in my future.

Regardless, I feel strongly we are all using that word wrong.

Heh, interesting about the etymology. That's a bit like 'nest egg', which means savings - yet a real nest egg is a bit of capital equipment. I've read an investment brings higher returns. Capital increases productivity. Investments don't necessarily lead to capital formation... unless you consider things like human capital to be capital... Obviously, this can all become a technical rathole.

Anyways, I also learned yesterday that 'girl' just meant child until the 15th century...

...ok back to the regular programming...

Interesting link, thanks! I really like her point about asking her design team to style their shoots the same way they dressed themselves. It shows how hard it can be to recognize and trust what works about one's own style.

Sterling, I often grumble about the 'investment' term -- though I think her answer is only misusing it mildly compared to most! She gets the real point. I think we can use a broader definition of investment than simply appreciation of the item itself. A suit bought for a law firm interview, for instance, is a true investment. It's money put forward in hope of recouping it later as salary from a successful career. But I do think the concept has been muddied by using the word investment too loosely. Really what we more often mean is, 'worth it.' A Burberry coat may well bring hundreds of positive experiences over many years; a flash-in-the-pan trend may not. Maybe we can think of that as investment in our own future happiness, but the research shows that happiness doesn't always work that way! At any rate, I think the word's misuse is only a problem when people genuinely think the expensive thing is a rational financial choice just because it is higher quality or longer lasting. It might be, but it isn't always.

I suppose also, 'not losing money' is different than 'hoping to make money'. If I can buy one good pair of shoes this year, and keep them many years, I might save money over buying a disposable pair each year. But is that an investment, by the usual financial definition? I suppose not. But making that choice requires having financial resources at hand, up front, much like the rest of capitalism, and not everyone can do that!

Also I just learned that the word 'investment' has the same etymology as vestments aka clothing! I guess that's obvious in retrospect.

Lisa, thanks for the introduction. I wasn't familiar with her but I have just followed her on Insta and will have a good read of her blog. I think I would like to be her friend too. I could not agree more that it's all about expressing your personal style. My style icons are all women who seemingly just do their own thing.

The concept of an investment piece, (and I totally get what Sterling is saying), to me is that it's an item that adds real value to you wardrobe and has longevity.

High/low is rudimentary to my style and I know Angie always mentions it as a style tenet also. I love seeing how different people actually do it, and Lisa Tant definitely wins my heart with that skirt.
Regarding "investment" shoes and bags, they only appreciate if they are Chanel or Hermes as far as I can tell, but they can pay off in social capital in some circles I suppose.

Thanks for posting this article. I liked how she said that she spent more money on high-quality bags and shoes because they look better for longer. It's so hard to keep shoes looking nice...good to know that when I buy shoes that are not cheap, I am buying something that will hang around for a while.

I want to read more about her decor, *ogles room in the background*

I very much agree with her idea that personal style is about more than just copying the latest designer look... and that it results in outfits that are way more unique and interesting.

Having just finished To Die For, I'm less convinced about the "Scrimp/Splurge!" or "Spend/Save!" mantra as presented in fashion media, as it's often a way of legitimizing the fast fashion carousel. In any case, I don't think that's really what she's getting at, as your "low" could easily be something that's been in your closet for years or a thrift find as something from H&M.

Also, that Dries van Noten skirt would probably still look fabulous with a trash bag on top. :)

Thank you, Lisa P. Off to read her article right now.

A pet peeve that I have yet to comment on on YLF.

I will now.

An investment is something that appreciates over time (house, IRAs, rare art collections). Clothing and cars rarely appreciate, they most often depreciate (https://youlookfab.com/welookf.....d-clothing). Hence, they could never be defined as an investment.

I DO understand and appreciate the sentiment. I thoroughly endorse the idea of buying the best you can afford. I just wish retailers and bloggers would not try to convince young women that clothing is an investment. I cringe in my soul every time I read a sentence like that.

[Quietly steps down from soapbox.]

Great reminder, lisa p! I agree with the sentiment, though my version of "high" is most often a statementy retail item bought at a healthy discount. I haven't paid more than $200 for anything in decades...well, there was one pair of Fluevogs that went over that mark, but they got returned.

I also note that potentially included but not explicitly stated in her juxtaposition is old/new. I use that one a lot, whether it's old just-thrifted or old I've-had-it-for-ages (maybe bought it new, maybe not). I also mix dressy-ish/casual.

Love the concept. Super fun!

For non-Canadians, Lisa Tant is a well-know Canadian fashion editor, stylist, and former Holt Renfrew executive who now holds a high-level position with Nordstrom Canada. I like to think we are "friends" in a way - we correspond via instagram and sometimes through FB - and I read every word she writes with the utmost respect for her ideas and talent. Here she writes about styling and fashion.
