I should be finished with my studies at the end of the year. Then it depends on how soon I find a job and where. I want to try to move more southwest again, nearer to the family. And not again such a big city. There isn't really anything keeping me here, most friends plan to move or have moved away already too.

Thanks, Astrid! My cousin from Berlin is visiting in August and I can't wait to show him around! It's hard to be in a gym when the outdoors is so accessible. Are you moving soon?

Una, I'm totally envious that you have this nature around you to walk/hike in! I personally prefer those activities too and living in Berlin has been pretty miserable for nature loving me. At this point I can't wait to move! And I agree, I won't do it either if it isn't fun, that's why I never managed to stick with the gym.

I agree that often the resorting to wearing baggy clothing can be a symptom of feeling down on one's body. I participate in a running class every summer. Often I only see people from year to year in the class. Last week, a woman from last year said to me "OMG you are so skinny now!" I said thanks and thought it was an odd comment because I have not in fact lost any weight. BUT I was wearing a somewhat body con/closer-fitting sleeveless shirt (the shirts this year are sleeveless, not my choice), black running capris and a new little running skirt. I think that wearing a less baggy shirt was the difference. I work out nearly every day (and fwiw, I've never in 35 years had a runner's high) but I do feel better in many ways when I am active.

I agree that in much happier with how I look when I'm working out regularly. I might complain about my thighs but when I'm running consistently I think those same thighs look great. Right now I do a hodgepodge of activities - walk with one friend on the weekend, walk with another friend during the week, go to a TRX class with a third friend, maybe go for a run or work out on my exercise bike. I'm much better about working out when I have company.

Also want to add that it has to be fun or I won't do it. For me personally, a treadmill or spin class is misery. I know others love it, though! A nice muddy hike with the dog or friends or an afternoon climbing with my partner - so much fun I don't even think of it as exercise! It feels like laughing all night.

That has been my modus operandi for 40+ years! I loved, that as a teen, I could literally run the circumference of the small city I lived in during a long-slow-distance day training for a marathon. I loved my body naked, and couldn't understand why clothes off the rack didn't fit or flatter? Who were these crazy people designing this stuff?

Even now, I feel I look my best after a workout. Designers still seem to be crazy people, but with advice and guidance from Angie and other wise fashion folks, style isn't as elusive as it once seemed.

Echo, keep on rock'n the exercise program. Don't burn yourself out, or beat yourself up if you need a break, but do make time for around 10 hrs of vigourous exercise every week. Your body and your brain will thank you!

I always feel better when I exercise, but sometimes I hurt so bad that I can barely move. Tonight is such a night. Hopefully I'll be able to exercise tomorrow. I do what I can and try not to worry about what I can't do, but not being able to exercise daily makes weight loss more difficult.

Yes! I went through a horrible few years of hiding my body under clothes that were too big and it is even worse being petite. Nothing fits anywhere. Such an ugly look and because I hated myself and the way I looked I refused to buy quality clothing which made the whole exercise a disaster.

So I bought a dog to make me get out and walk (which I actually love) and lost a few pounds not dieting but eating well and reducing my intake of garbage. And I am slowly buying a new wardrobe of appropriate clothing.

Win. Win.

Absolutely! Post-surgery as I get back to walking and hiking, I am a million percent more comfortable in my skin. And that may explain why I am at home in gear too - in some ways, it integrates the most authentic mental and physical side of me - outdoorsy, active and happy to be covered in dirt.

I've always thought using your body to do things was the best antidote to body angst. I also think it's a shame that so many girls get turned off physical activities because they "aren't good at sports". It's hard to hate your arms when you see what they can lift or bemoan your thighs when they help you propel your bike up a hill.

Yes, Echo, I have noticed this -- when I'm looking after my body and treating it like a high-performance machine, I like how it looks. If I'm staying up late a lot and not eating well or getting any fresh air and exercise (the fresh air bit seems to be important for me!), I'm more likely to have negative thoughts about my body.

I'll take it a step further, even. If I'm doing well with my academic and studio work, I feel really good about my whole self -- appearance included.

When I got serious about Irish dance, I started feeling comfortable in shorts for the first time. It's not that I thought I shouldn't wear shorts, but I just never felt like showing off my legs. I don't know how much of the change was from knowing what my legs could do, vs also having more muscular legs. (I do love it when I notice how muscular my legs look.)

Endorphins. You are feeling endorphins, Echo. GOOD FOR YOU.

You feel better about your body, your strength, your abilities, and life when you are active. (That's why a long active walk clears your head and tempers your emotions - I'm a die hard walker!). You see yourself differently despite any physical changes in your body. Activity has a VERY powerful psychological effect. It also makes you want to eat better and take care of yourself. It's the gift that keeps on giving.

Yes, I've noticed the same thing. A few months ago while at a yoga class, I actually liked how my body looked in the mirror (the class is in a dance studio). It really surprised me. Something about being strong enough do all the positions, combined with seeing the other people in varying sizes and shapes and level of fitness somehow made me look good to myself. I also do a lot of walking and a little running and the stronger I get the more I like how I look in the mirror in yoga class. Strangely I don't always have the same feeling in regular clothes but I'm less critical than I used to be there too.

I think you hit on something really important here

I've begun a fairly intense workout program - not so much to lose weight (though I could certainly stand to), but to get fit. I've been biking about two hours daily, again, not because I feel I have to, but because I want to. I had somehow lost sight of the fact that I feel better when I exercise. My body is much, much happier being active, and that affects my mind, too.

I have not been doing this long enough to see real results yet (except my rides getting longer), but when I look in the mirror, I like what I see more. It's so strange. Outfits that I didn't like before because I thought they emphasized aspects of my body I didn't like feel great now, despite fitting the same.

The last two items of clothing I purchased, I purchased a size smaller. Again, this is not because I AM a size smaller, but because I realized that I'd been buying clothing too large to hide my body. Much of my clothing is loose, and the armholes are too big/low. The more recent purchases actually fit properly.

Anyway, has anyone else noticed that when they are happy with what their body can DO, they are also happier with how it looks (even if it looks the same)?
