Hi rubygirl, I thought you may be interested in seeing a couple of blogs Angie did on the Body Shape Bible, way back in 2007
http://youlookfab.com/2007/12/.....ody-types/

http://youlookfab.com/2007/12/.....ody-types/

I read Trinny and Susannahs books (they were the authors, and hosted the british series what not to wear) before YLF started, and I quite like them.

I found their "skittle" type almost bang on right for me and I liked the suggestions for that body type too.

That said, I prefer to get my body type help from Angie these days, because I really like her positive approach and because she is able to answer questions and give real advice!

Another person who has written quite a lot on body types, and who has done guest posts for Angie in Imogen Lampart on InsideOut style, Here is a link to her Real Life Body shape series - but if you follow the links at the bottom of those articles you'll see quite a bit more.

Thank you so much! Finally, this actually makes it so much clearer. My conclusion is that I'm right between the goblet and the vase. The view from the back gives a good idea of the size of the waist and the side view of the proportion of the top and bottom body.

Bettycrocker, can you share a photo of the vase, lollipop and goblet bodies (a different one that those that rubygirl shared)? I haven't found the book in any bookstore. Those are the three figures that I think could be my description. I actually asked in here (I got those three responses) but I feel another angles of those body shapes could help me find out.

I'm even more confused by these types; maybe I'm a Skittle? I might think I was a Column, except I'm not tall, and I don't have trouble finding sleeves or pants long enough. I find Angie's types easier to understand: I'm a slim hourglass with slight rectangle tendencies.

I want to add: I think the system is helpful if it's something that helps you understand your body and your style better. It seems reasonable that some systems will resonate more with some of us and other systems with others. So I'm not at all meaning to dismiss this one. I do like that they've illustrated the types with real photos rather than drawings.

I like this, a lot. Allows you to do some comparing and elimination.

I don't think, however, I'll ever get it. I really had to study the pictures hard to see the differences that things seemed to be turning on.

Also, I think about this one time, I was talking to a local designer. She said there were something like 38 standard patterns (which then come in different sizes) and most designers only designed for one, possibly two of those patterns.

...The devil is in the details!

@Suz - I wish I could say I was getting close to what my body type is after the weight loss but sadly I am not. You are so right when you say we sometimes do not see ourselves as we really are. I am very guilty of that. I have no real sense of how big or small I am.

I think I am between the hour glass and the vase. I know I bought this boyfriend cardigan a couple of weeks back and I know if I button only the first button when wearing it that it pulls things together. Like what they suggest for the vase. But in all reality I can pull a little something from each and say that works for me.

Funny story I was at the orthopaedic doctor's office for my knee last week and this lady came in about my age and I immediately thought to myself - she looks wonderful and I sure do hope someday to be her size. I then noticed that while she was sitting in the same chair type as I was and her body was up against the chair. Mine was not.
This showed me that I have no sense of what I look like. I immediately thought I was considerably bigger than her and her size in my mind was my target size.

The mirrors in my home do not allow me the opportunity to get good enough shots so I could ask for feedback on my shape and what works best for me.

Maybe I will get brave and post some pictures that will not be of the best quality and ask for feedback.

This journey has certainly been an interesting one to say the least.

Suz is so right. I have the book, and my body most resembles The Skittle. I don't bemoan my thighs, though. My only fit issue is finding pants that don't whisker across the tops of my legs near my crotch. I don't fret about not having the perfect body. Everyone has fit issues. That said, the book is worth having if you do like I did and buy it used for a very low price. It does have some helpful tips and recommendations.

Suz is so right! I have that book, and my body looks just like the Skittle. I don't bemoan my thighs, though, and think it's a problem except for finding pants that don't whisker across that area. I don't sit and fret about not having a perfect body, and don't worry that everything I wear is absolutely my most flattering look. Thanks to Angie and YLF, I've learned to have fun with fashion. I know what the rules are and how to break them. I still struggle a little with color, but I'm getting there. The book gives good guidelines, though.

What I love about this: Real women, real bodies.

What I like a whole lot less: the assumption that there is something "wrong" with the bodies and that these women need to disguise "flaws."

I know they are speaking (in an imaginative way) in the women's voices. And heaven knows we are all our own worst critics. Yet I still wish there had been more celebration and less "how to hide it."

That's why I prefer Angie's guidelines -- they're more inclusive, more generous. It's true they are also a bit more general (since she only lists 5 main types). And this kind of breakdown (Trinny & Susannah's) can be really useful I think if you are focusing on a perceived problem and how to deal with it. So...not saying I am against this. Just that it needs to be viewed together with others.

Ruby, are you coming closer to a sense of your own body type following the weight loss? In my own experience, it can be a bit of a shock and isn't always easy to figure out; we sometimes do not see ourselves as we are.

This is a gross generalization, but here goes: Several of us here on the forum saw ourselves as "pretty pears." In some cases weight loss has been the catalyst to a new self-visioning; in other cases there was no weight loss involved but photos and forum feedback revealed the rectangle who thought she was a pear, the hourglass who assumed she was a pear, and so on. I don't know why we always focus on our thighs, but many of us seem to! (Said by one who is so, so guilty of that!) :)
