I do this with my friends, all of whom ask me to shop with or for them because I can separate my own style from theirs and am weirdly able to pick people's sizes. For me it's just a hobby and a fun outlet rather than a career possibility. But for Rae and Nicole, I see a definite calling, especially in the not-so-wealthy market. Go Rae!

It's a awesome idea i just feel completely overwhelmed by it. And sometimes i have a hard time having confidence in myself in certain aspects. I can dress myself but i'm not sure about dressing others professionally. The Nordstrom in my area is currently looking for a Personal Stylist in Training but i'm sure they'd want someone with at least SOME experience.

But i think everyone dreams of having a job that they love to do. I'm just not sure that's a reality for me.

I have always wanted to have my own personal stylist. One who understands how I see myself and can do all of the legwork of finding items that will help me best express my what I want others to know about me. It just seems so expensive though. I am getting more adventurous in my style but still hate the shopping process.

That's something I ask myself also Rae. I hired a stylist about 18 months ago for my boss. I had been doing some work for her but and we were doing a tv program and we felt some professional input could be helpful. The woman was lovely, (trained by our very expensive institute) but was all about "rules", and dressed people in stereotypes. I felt she lacked the ability Angie has to tap into an individuals personality and help them achieve THEIR style goal. So I guess my point is formal training is not everything. You have experience through your blog, you have people who follow your blog and you give incredibly astute advice and suggestions when you comment on YLF, and your own presentations confirms you know what you are talking about:).

Deborah, I see some expensive certification courses here, too. Trying to decide what the added "legitimacy" in the eyes of potential clients is worth.

Nicole and Rae you should go for it! I have been considering something similar starting with wardrobe consults but I have stopped myself because I don't think I am qualified. But then hubby reminded me that I have been doing this for years for friends, organizing their wardrobes, shopping for them, and I have styled for a tv series and a music dvd shoot (For some reason I always forget this). I consider what I have learnt here at YLF to be the best training - and its ongoing - I could get. There is a significant course one can do here but it is super expensive and Im not convinced that training alone makes a good stylist , personal shopper etc. This post has encouraged me further and hope it does you also. Thanks for sharing it Una.

Hubs just sent me Neil Gaiman's recent commencement speech to encourage me... all I can say is "wow." Dana, you are right... life is too short.

Lyn, thank you for sharing - at least now I know what to Google in my area. There are so many options, woah! Perhaps I will ask Angie if she has a recommendation - but not now, as she has to nurse her poor citron jacket.

Rae, it was a 3 day Personal Styling for Women course run by and Australian equivalent of Angie. It really makes you realise that there are lots of women out there that are really 'clueless' about how to dress and are willing to pay someone else to do it! The going rate here is around $75 upwards and hour to take a client shopping or sort through their closet etc. It takes lots of researching on the Stylists part to know the client's needs and what is on offer at any particular time, so that time is not wasted in sourcing unsuitable garments.
I haven't pursued this any further because I am lacking in confidence and motivation!

Rae, if this is your passion, I would go for it. Life is too short to look back and think, yeah, I had a nice safe bank job, BUT IF ONLY... That bank job will always be there. But your dreams only live if you let them.

No one ON EARTH ever thought I could make a living doing what I do. I suppose one day I might not be able to. But I'm glad I did it so far!

You know what? This link sparked a conversation with Hubs, and he is surprisingly really enthusiastic about me trying to do something like this - even if I had to re-start from the bottom working at a department store since I have no experience. I keep saying I don't know what my passion is, but what am I thinking?? This IS my passion... I've been doing it all my life, from the first time I cut up a T-shirt in my bedroom and gave my poor mom a heart attack.

Lyn, thank you for the pep talk. I'm really going to look into this - can I ask what kind of class you took?

VC, when I first had my idea for a "custom thrift" business, this is exactly what I wanted to address - I wanted to bring this type of service to a budget market. I like what you said about outsourcing the work that you aren't the best at, to achieve the best results. It shouldn't mean that you change your entire budget or lifestyle; just that you pay for a service, like a haircut or landscaping as you said.

Nicoleb and Rae, you should both consider this as a viable option. Just being regulars on this forum has probably given you lots of the know-how needed for such a career.
I attended a course last year and discovered that what is really important in Personal Styling is the confidence to get out there and DO IT!
All you need to do with any 'fashion-challenged' friends is say "Lets go shopping together and be adventurous." You will be surprised at how many positive reactions you receive.

Interesting article! I'm one of those who would pay someone to help me get my act together. It turns out that I don't really like shopping for myself. Don't get me wrong, I love shopping, but I have a terrible time when it comes to shopping for stuff for me. I love buying things for other people, but I have a hard time trying to find just the right things for myself.

In the meantime, I kind of wish that the whole idea would become a little less mystifying/confusing. And further - I also wish that the concept of hiring someone to help you find just the right things (clothing-wise) didn't seem like it's only for people who are going to spend a lot.

I'm just a regular person - but I am terrible at lawn-cutting, so I hire someone to do that. I can't sew to save my life, so I have no qualms about paying for tailoring, sewing, alteration services.

In the meantime, I make pretty decent food (according to those close to me), so I wouldn't hire someone for this. But the thing is? Even if I'm good at some stuff, I'm also terrible at other things, and I am quite happy to pay for those services.

That said though, I have the perception that having a personal stylist/shopper is only for people who are going to spend thousands at a time. That's not me! And yet, having said that - I wish I could find someone who'd help me out just a wee bit, without it meaning that I must be a movie star or have all kinds of money to spend on clothes.

It would be really nice if this whole idea of having a personal stylist/shopper wasn't so intimidating and if it didn't seem like it was only for people who are going to spend a certain amount all at once.

Maybe my perceptions are skewed about this?

...

I think there is a market for personal stylists/shoppers for 'regular people'.
