I didn't read the articles, but my mom was a seamstress. She knew how to alter patterns before cutting the fabric and making the clothing so it would fit properly. She received her training in Chicago, and there was nothing she couldn't do. She made all of my clothing except jeans. She even made my wedding gown. I don't know how many people have those skills now. Probably older people. My mom was born in 1918, when sewing was a lot more of a necessary skill than it is now.

Makes me wonder if we're losing the ability to make custom pieces.

I read both articles from beginning to end, but I have to say I was fascinated by the Davide Taub one. He sounds such an cloth artist. I'm checking out his blog too. Thanks Kari.

I found both of these articles really interesting, and thought some of you might like to read them - especially if you have considered getting pieces custom-made (or like me, are simply curious.)

First of all, the adventures of working with overseas tailors - and with a very cooperative Savile Row cutter who allowed one of his suits to be used - to attempt to reproduce a superb suit, and finding that it was very difficult to do so. This reminded me of Angie's adventures with successful and unsuccessful custom-tailored pieces many years ago.
http://www.newyorker.com/busin.....l_facebook

Second, the experience of getting an impeccably tailored corset perfectly fitted to your skeleton at San Francisco's Dark Garden. Corsets have never appealed to me personally - I don't do costuming/cosplay and they don't fit with my personal style - but boy, do I love to look. This is an incredible piece.
http://offbeatbride.com/dark-garden-corset/
