I can agree with parts of the article. Most of my clothing loose and flowly originate from my style as a teen.

I really don't like structur3.

It's really interesting how some elements stayed the same. I had to laugh at Rachylou's kindergarten comment....some toddlers dress great.
My mum made me wear dresses that she made...looking back they were really pretty but I just wanted to wear jeans!

Hmm...I can start to rattle off a list of style preferences that haven't changed since high school, but then I drift into an equally long list of style preferences that have changed, or changed and then changed back again and again.

Always: turtleneck sweaters, chunkier shoes, deep parts in my hair, sometimes with bobby pins, opaque tights, plaid

Come and go: Jeans- I wore old 501s through highschool and remember saying I'd never wear a flare. Then I loved flares and skinnies looked crazy. Then skinnies were all that made sense. Then I found boyfriend jeans and felt like I'd come home to my 501s. I also go through periods of a year or more where I don't touch jeans at all.

Waist surrendering is also back for me. The dresses are a little longer, but the trapeze dresses I'm loving now remind me of my babydoll dresses from back in the day.

I feel like if knit blazers had existed earlier I would have always loved them. I always liked the look of a blazer, but I don't have an easy off the thrift store rack fit. It's taken me a very long time to figure out how jackets work. I'm still figuring it out.

I was also excited when motos came back, although it took a couple of years for me to find a few that are just right, because I always loved a moto, but the selection wasn't good enough for me to be picky enough about fit for a few decades.

I had a definite penchant for coats and shoes, probably because my mom let me chose them myself, and because I was able to get a new one every year. I loved the part of the article about how some of the people altered and individualized their clothes when they were kids. I wonder how common that is? I recall for example, taking a bright yellow down puffer that I had sort of outgrown. The sleeves were too short, but the torso still fit. I cut off the sleeves, much to my mothers dismay, and then sewed the armholes closed and made a vest. Feathers flew everywhere! I loved it, and wore my vest until it was unwearable. I also would paint my clothes, quilt my clothes, add patches, and do other small things. My DD is another person who creatively altered her clothing as a teenager. She continues to do so, but she's an artist.

Maybe after 40 years? *NOT* I think my school uniform made an indelible impression on me. I've had a navy blue blazer in my closet from the age of 12, with other colours of that classic style acquired over the years. About a year after joining YLF, and feeling a shake-up/change was needed, I jettisoned ALL my blazer type jackets. I've had fun with jean style jackets as my third element, but low-and-behold, I picked up a plaid blazer style jacket this past winter!

Oh, I haven't outgrown my kindergarten style yet, lol. Ok. Well, I've made an effort to tone down the puff sleeves and bows, but the mary janes are worming their way back in. And I have become quite fond of pants - or jeggings to be more specific. And I don't suppose I've always had the punk-prep connection thing going on, but the punk has come to stand in the front. Probably due to the demise of cocktail hour.

A lot of the elements of my teenage style have been with me ever since. Stompy boots, black, leather. design details, things out of the mainstream (less classic).
My teenage years are where I found myself sartorically speaking. It was when I got to pick out my own clothes.

I've been sleeping and now have to go to work. I want to come back and read all the comments when I get home.
The part that resonated with me was the person saying she's spent a small fortune trying to recreate what she wore as a teenager. I still wear a lot of jeans and sporty wear like I did then and still like the same tomboyish, urban clothes I liked back then.

Yes. Straight-legged, dark wash jeans, a sweater, boots, and a leather jacket. Worn back in the late sixties and early seventies with long, straight dark hair; worn in 2016 with shorter, curlier, grey hair. Oh, and, if the leather jacket isn't handy, I could sub in an almost-identical-to-the-one-I-wore-in-the-seventies-right-down-to-the-color camel Gloverall duffle coat.

It took me half a century to realize these pieces always have been, and will continue to be, core elements of my style.

Fun article! I definitely have retained some 90 elements my style, like a love of combat boots paired with girly things and raisin lipstick. And my burgundy hair is basically a subtler, grown up version of the 90s burgundy hair that I always wanted but was not allowed to have.

ETA: also my love for juxtaposition comes from 90's fashion. I know it was a thing in many fashion eras but I first became aware of it in the 90's and it was a big theme in my teenage years.

Interesting and enjoyable article. Thanks for sharing. Echoing what Kaelyn just said -- I have not so much outgrown the style of my youth as I have let it mature. Like Leah Harper in the article -- as a teen ‘Style-wise, I was all over the place’. Same could be said for today. I am a true eclectic and have always enjoyed changing my style persona with my mood. I have also always been a maximalist and drawn to bold jewelry and accessories. And, forty plus years down the road, I still adore flared jeans. Some things never change. :-)

I was just thinking about this a few days ago. I don't think I've outgrown my teenage style, so much as tweaked it and let it mature. I was a jeans and tee gal all the way, and now I wear more sophisticated tees and a greater variety of jeans, and I've gotten better at making the look more interesting. I also liked really unique clothes with a hard edge, goth or punk look, and it's still true. I experimented quite a bit over the last several years, but I've come back to square one and realized it's where I'm happiest and I was drawn to those looks for a reason!

I can see strong indications of my current style in my past style. I still wear mostly the same colors that have always attracted me. I always enjoyed interesting shoes (except for those dim years in the 90s when the only shoes I wore were black, black, and more black). I've always loved nice prints and patterns. I always liked jackets and hats, and I can't remember a time when I didn't wear statement rings. Even as a teenager, I tended to skew a little more "dressed up" than my peers, thanks to the influence of my mom, who loved shopping, was always impeccably groomed, and always dressed a little nicer than she had to.

My teenage years were spent in a school uniform. What I wore when I changed out of the uniform had no rhyme or reason (i.e., whatever was handy; fit and style were not a factor and it showed). I have no fond memories of those days.
