What an interesting read! I particularly
like:

“Thanks to the immediacy created by digital media, consumers are driven
to purchase what they perceive as must-haves more than ever”

I so agree with this. I have
seen this happen way too many times, and consciously made an effort to NOT buy
something only because its trending and considered HOT especially if it looks
horrid on me and simply doesn’t sync with my sense of style.

My recent peev is lug sole
shoes where the sole is white and the shoe itself is coloured. What’s with
that? I’m sure some people love these, for example my sister, who wears flats
and heels and metallics and bright colours…but to me they just look odd. Kind
of like Sneakers married Block heels!

To give an example – I truly
hate the shoe in #1….even though the shoe in #2 doesn’t look odd to me at all.
I hope white lugged heel on pretty shoes is one such ‘It’ trend that will “burn bright
and then burn hot and fast, and then kind of fade to a simmer”!

I figure if it is an expression of MY style , MY color palette then likely I'll wear the item to the ground . Sometimes experimenting with a cheaper iteration of the look first and then upgrading works well too.

Great article. For me, it's very hard to buy into an It trend until I see how it all plays out. When I do buy a trend, its usually after some time has passed so I don't look like a trend victim and after it has filtered down to my regular stores. And when I do make the decision to buy a trend, I will get it in a neutral color to further increase the shelf life. I also ask myself..is this a trend that I would buy anyway (do I like IT or just because it is trendy)? Is it something that will work with my current wardrobe? Do I have to buy all sorts of other things to make it work? If any of the answers are no, maybe or hmmmm perhaps then I pass. I still need to get dressed every day and I don't want anything staring at me from the closet that makes my life more complicated. And I'm tired of dealing with getting rid of stuff that I have grown tired of. I get tired of trends especially in this day of internet-viewing over saturation. Those little "envelope skorts" are a good example of my trend-hate. I don't ever want to see one of those again. But flowy tops over slim bottoms are right up my alley. As are birk-style sandals. I can see myself wearing these trends for quite a while.

Hmm. I have a thought lurking in the back of my mind about *It* items and girls and so forth, but I can't quite catch it. There's Jean Shrimpton and then there's Christie Brinkley, for example. To be honest, but not too cruel I hope, I think Jean is legendary but not Christie. There's *it* and then there's *it.*

That was an excellent article. It convinced me NOT to buy the Birkenstocks as a fashion item even though I have been wearing them for years. (They are my everyday cooking shoes for wearing on hardwood floors!) I don't see them as fiting my style and isn't what YLF is all about?? Thanks. It is a great site.

This was an amazing read. Thanks for sharing! There are some trends that don't seem to appeal to me, and I have in the past given in coz everyone else seemed to be rocking it. Esp with the net, you may feel outdated if you are not "with IT"...

I just recently found my Holy Grail Birks for this season, and although they are an "It" item, I've been wearing Birkenstocks for 20-some years. I'm not going to stop when they are no longer on trend, but I will congratulate myself of having purchased styles that I never saw before and that I will likely never see again!

And yes I had hard and long time looking for the Kenzo tiger head sweatshirt. I'm glad I eventually got it in grey on grey. It definitely will last longer in my closet.

Very interesting. I tend to buy neutrals in expensive items too - they have a far longer shelf life imo.

Thanks, Ummilla. I've spent the weekend trying on Birks and Birks wannabes and wondering how long the look will be trending. I did pull the trigger, but needed a comfort sandal to replace my worn out Merrell's anyway. I like the idea of a trendy item becoming a classic. I think the Rockstud has become iconic that way.
