Brenda- yes, it is a journey and you are doing a great job with it. It does take time to weed out the old and readjust our shopping eye. I'm enjoying watching your style evolve.
btw, not sure you ever posted it here, but I just loved that magenta, black and white outfit on your blog. so fun, fresh and springy! and that red ruffle blouse is KILLER!!!

Brenda I'm with everyone else. The shorter length of this dress would look infinitely better with this outfit!!

The length of the items you have been showing are older thrifted items. That in itself is ok, but the length of these maxi and longer dresses look really dated, and thus ages you also, you are still fairly young and needn't hide your legs:) by hemming them you are salvaging them by giving them and yourself a more current look:)

Michelle, thank you so much for your comment, and believe it or not, moving forward, I am more selective in my purchases. This dress was purchased before I discovered YLF when I didn't know that long dresses didn't work as well for me as shorter ones. So I'm kind of working through my old stuff, and seeing what works....and then really focusing on fit and style when I buy something new. So I'm moving in the right direction at least. Thanks so much for you comments!!

Brenda, I can't comment on this outfit, but just wanted to offer a thought based on your post. You say you're averse to spending a lot of money on clothing, which I can certainly understand. But at the prices you pay, alterations would still put the total cost of your garments well below most retail prices. The expense would be so absolutely worth it, in my opinion, since it would fill your wardrobe with surefire hits rather than a bunch of garments with only marginal potential. I'm definitely of the quality over quantity mindset when it comes to clothing, though, and I readily acknowledge that this is swaying my thinking. Would it be worth it, in your view, to make fewer purchases and just make sure the items you do buy are as flattering as humanly possible?

(Ducking as I say this...) The shorter length really does make your legs look awesome! Just right below your knee, if you aren't comfortable shorter, would be perfect!

Shorter is so much better! It doesn't have to be above your knees. Try it at the middle of the knee or hitting the lower part of your kneecap...experiment to find your sweet spot. You might try one of those narrow elastic hair bands around your waist to help adjust the dress length so you can get a good look from all angles.
I agree with Khris that the jacket looks off. However, it may be the perfect denim jacket with the 50's style dress that flares out from the waist.

The shortened version of this dress looks so much better IMO. It's a pretty color on you, and I like the white beads with it. I think this jacket is too short- it distorts the proportions and looks a little dated.

Another long dress, however I keep hearing the YLF community chanting "shorten that dress! show your legs!!" I have made an appointment with my tailor for some estimates.....so I'm slowly coming around....

But don't you think the cut of this dress lengthens my waistline a bit? Can the tailoring trump the length?
