By type, and by colour within each type. So shirts/ blouses (by colour). My skirts and trousers are on special hangers. Then dresses (by colour). Then jackets (by colour). My shoes are underneath the jackets. Sweaters are folded by type and colour on the shelf.

The way that works best for me is by type and then by color in each type. Dresses are hung at one end, then pant hangers, with shorter things in the middle where plastic shoe boxes are stacked on a shelf underneath. These hold scarves sorted by color and give easy access.

I did color for a while, just for fun, but then I put it back by type because my closet looked like this: blackblackblackblackblackwhitegreygreybluebluegreen.

Add the poor lighting situation to the overabundance of black, and it was impossible to find things even though I *knew* I was looking right at them! Now things are sorted by type and sleeve length. I rarely want to look for, say, a green shirt, but I do know whether I want to wear long sleeves or sleeveless.

Type. But since I don't have many colors, I define my types fairly rigorously. So, within pants, I sort by cut (bootcut, boyfriend, skinny; long, cropped, etc.). It's a bit neurotic but I love it because I always know where everything is.

Like you used to, by type. So I can find it quickly when I'm half awaken in the morning.

Every now and then, I like to pull everything out on my bed and look at the colours together. It gives me new outfit ideas. I then try out outfits and when I find one, I write down every element on a little notebook, down to the jewels, shoes, purse, and even outerwear. I name my outfit with the feel I get from it. I guess I could also simply take a pic of myself. In the morning it is then easy to consult the notebook and pick an outfit, especially if there is a name. For example, "Casual Flower Child" or "Femme-Femme". It helps me remember and select something appropriate for where I'm going. I wouldn't pick "Casual Flower Child" for work, for example.
(Again, a pic would be more simple. But I enjoy naming outfits).

I have tried for years to rely solely on my wardrobe in the morning to inspire me. Alas! It has never served me well. Too many rushed departure with "nothing to wear" and settling for less-than-satisfactory get-ups at the last minute. Building outfits in advance works much better for me.

About hanging: adding more rails to my life has made it much happier! Larger, wider, easy to open IKEA drawers have made a big difference in keeping frustration level low in the morning. I now dedicate my older chester for non-clothes items or gym clothes, which are never a problem.

I sort mine by type. Most of my things are folded on shelves, I don't have much hanging space. The only things hanging are some of my skirts, blouses and blazers. I don't really sort by anything else than type because I have so few things. No need to sort three warm knit sweaters by color, is there?

By colour as I only have one rail. But if I had two rails, I'd put tops at the top and bottoms at the bottom, still sorted by colour.

Both! :)

For the longest time, I sorted by type-then-color. Everything looked so regular and organized! A few months back, I switched to color-then-type for no particular reason at all. And now all the colors look so pretty!

Switching the organizing system, while somewhat frivolous, felt a bit like getting a new wardrobe item. New outfits jumped out at me, old favourites got rotated back in ... I got the same "hit" as purchasing a new item, but without any money spent.

I have current season clothes in my bedroom closet, and other season and more occasional stuff in another closet.
I usually sort by length and type, alternating colours so items are more visible.

I've got mine first by type and then by color. I can see how putting all the like colors together of different garments would really make you think of some interesting combinations, though.

All my life I arranged the clothes in my closet by type. Tops, then skirts, followed by pants. The dresses came next, and then the jackets.

Six months ago, I completely re-arranged my closet, sorting clothes by colour, like a rainbow, regardless of what type of garment.

The contents of my closet look so much more interesting this way, and I believe it has lead me to try some outfit combos I might not have thought of before.

How do you organize your clothes?
