Thank you guys! Alienate, your guy sounds very wise. I love his thoughts on shoes and aging!

Lyn, I appreciate the perspective and great visuals of the shoes with the outfits. Your husband is handsome and has great style!

Liz, that does bear some thought - he has specifically mentioned that he doesn't like the look of slim pants that look too short to him. His eye just can't adjust to that look...

You guys have given me a lot to think about! I really appreciate the variety of opinions and perspectives. Thank you for taking the time to answer.

I'm with minimalist and lyn67 and others. I like the shoes you chose quite a bit, but they are for a very stylish, trendy type of guy. If your husband wants to keep these around for a few years, I would look for something similar to what lyn67's husband bought.

Also, I think the shoes you picked would look good with a slimmer dress pant with little to no break. Is that your husband's style?

I think they are on trend but proportionally looking a bit on the longish side still, think they will work quite good for those few dressier occasions your DH'll have/year:-). But I know so well what Ethan meant by fearing to buy some "cowboy" shoes when YH it may be "so NOT":-).

It is not only the length, the flatness and the prominence of the trim around the squarish toe box but the thickness and the kind of the sole....etc. OMG so many little details more a wife has to take all in consideration for a good fit style-, event and personality wise...

Now, speaking of men's dressy shoes, I've just updated DH' dressy shoes and they have a square toebox, too. Thus, for our few dressier events (by the way, almost the same as yours:-) we do not buy the dressiest "tux" shoes rather a dressier version of his go to casual brand- now it was Camel Active, for example. The toe box of his final purchased shoes start a bit higher but then have a small slopping edge to the end and have some stichings, too (both some great details, I think).

There were 2 pairs that fit him quite good one with leather sole and the other with a (hard enough) rubber sole and he had just chosen the rubber (& anti shock heeled) one- as the leather soles are usually making men shoes even more dressier-and we didn't need that now..

(see in my picties below how they upscale everything from jeans, shirts and sweaters to a suit jacket and work good even with a wool coat. Also, there is not shown here so you have to trust me they also work to his dark suit, too-and that was the original plan).

Hope my musings helped a bit!(?):-)

I vote to keep these, Sarah. My old (literally) man has a couple of pairs of shoes with this toe box, and he's tall with long, skinny legs. He is a believer that shoes age a guy fast--his shoes are more current than mine. Yes, his shoes don't come with à good CPW, but, unless it's work boots, he prefers the support of a broken in but not broken down pair.

Thank you Angie and Rachy! I missed that you both responded until just now. Angie, I agree on passing on those two pair. As soon as I pulled them out I realized that they need to go away, "Tired" was an awefully kind way of putting that. And I need to look for another pair like the last ones.

I'd say Trendy. Definitely not cowboy; these are strictly city slicker. I feel your husband would look good in them. I do like the elongated toe. But I should remind, I feel, I like out there stuff...

The new shoes are on trend, if hubs doesn't mind his feet looking extra long. (My new tall ink blue boots form London have a similar shaped toe box).

My stylish son wears Allen Edmonds black oxfords for work but I'm pretty sure that they would work for the events you mention if they were rather plain. They are rather pricey.
DH likes Cole Hahn and Nordstrom has some on sale now but my find app seems to be missing.
http://nord.imgix.net/Zoom/7/_.....r&
for the rare occasions that he will wear them, I would keep the ones you found. They look urban to me, not cowboy (and I live in an area with cowboys)

Hmm you know, for your husband's purposes of 2/year dressy, I don't know if current shoes can ever provide the best return on the money. So I'd personally favor something classic (and yes, risking boredom) that could well last the rest of his life. I'm mulling over specific models to suggest.

I like the style of the new black ones, (and no, I don't see cowboy!) but if they look current(-enough) now, they could potentially look dated in a few years, leaving you with a high CPW.

There are a couple of menswear-specific forums, such as AskAndyAboutClothes, where you could get further specific suggestions. Some active members are really into footwear as a passion, so don't be put off by the very visible tiny minority who spend ...um, a lot, on shoes they mainly have as museum pieces. You might not want to introduce Ethan to those forums, though!

I do think the new shoes look kinda too long and square. My husband (a very down to earth guy) likes Rockport "Dresports". They are comfortable and classic. Personal opinion here, but I think classic styles look better on grown up men.

Also, I just checked out the Rockport website and they have 40% off some styles.

They are a square toe, but not in a dated square toe kind of way. The toe box is elongated, which is much more elegant and far less dated than pics 3 & 4. I agree with Tricia, they're much more urban than they are cowboy.

While not exactly divided, our house is in a quandary over shoes for my husband, I found these Calvin Klein black shoes for $45 at TJ Max that I was instantly drawn to for John. He says that they are not too uncomfortable for dress shoes (probably the best I'll ever get from him on any shoe in this category) and he isn't strongly opposed or drawn to them and prefers to just trust my judgement. The problem is, I don't fully trust my judgement when it comes to men's fashion. Enter almost 14 year old Ethan onto the scene. He is extremely opinionated about his own style (our pocketbook is $60 lighter due to his most recent shoe purchase - white converse). Ethan is not happy about the slightly squared off toe (even though over all it reads more pointy than square) and he feels like they look like a cowboy boot style, and "Dad is SO not a cowboy!" The new shoes are in photos one and two. Other than work boots for work, and a vaireity of sneakers for causal/play, John wears dressier shoes very infrequently. It's possible that if we keep these shoes, they will outlive him. Because of this, he has two pair of shoes that I'm sure are not very stylish anymore, although I felt good about them back when we bought them.. Once or twice every year when he needs to dress up for a wedding, funeral, or dressy party, John looks as these two pairs of shoes (photos 3 and 4) and bemoans his lack of appropriate shoes. The new shoes would nicely fill that hole, but none of us are confident enough about the purchase to decide. The last photo is of the one shoe that John wears to every single semi-dressy outing (church, date night, etc). He loves those shoes so much! I've just included these for reference on what he likes and what he has in his shoe collection. So... over to all of you, what do you think? John was quite happy with the idea of letting you stylish ladies (and men, if any want to weigh in) help us know wat to do. The clothing he would wear them with are black dress pants and button down shirts (sometimes with a tie) - maybe a jacket, but unlikely, and dark jeans with button down shirt and sometimes a jacket. I am also curious about the proportion of the long narrow shoe with his body type being thin and angular (he is 5'10" and very thin). I've included an old photo of John in what he typically wears to church and going out (what he wears with his favorite "driving" shoes, not what he would wear with these new ones). Thank you in advance for all opinions and advice!
