Hmmm. Interesting discussion.

I think I used to be very much a late adopter. More recently, I might be shifting a bit when it comes to style. I think that's mainly because of what I've learned on this forum - I feel more comfortable trying something new after getting positive feedback here, so I'm not so scared that I'll look like a fashion victim.

Ana, I love that you are such a math nerd! Seeing a Gaussian distribution gets me excited too - I immediately want to start calculating confidence intervals!!

Well, as much as I hate to admit it, I have a habit of being on the later side of the majority. This is why I am so hesitant to try trends because I don't want to follow the herd and yet it takes me so long to get used to something before I am ready to give it a go. This is probably why I fall back on classics - much safer that way!

Maya, I feel your pain with the Macs. I bought the iBook G4 literally weeks before they switched to the intel chip. Boy was that a mistake. I just got the new MacBook Pro and LOVE it!

Very interesting. There are a few reasons I am either an innovator or early adopter.

-Whether it is technology or clothes, I hate it when I jump on the bandwagon JUST as the trend is about to fade away or a new version of what I'm using is about to be released. I bought my Powerbook (which I still use) about a month before the first version of the Macbook Pro was released (obviously, I did not know about the release, as Apple is very tight-lipped about these things). Better to start early and get as much pleasure and use as you can. I find that procrastinating on these things just puts you in a rut where you never really get to give anything new a proper chance, and you end up falling back on the same old trusty items, whether cropped cardigans or rotary phones.

-I would get seriously bored if I didn't always have a long list of new things to try. I never even make it to half my list at any given time, but you know, reach for the stars and land on the moon or whatever the saying is...

-I see no point in being timid. You can try things on in the fitting room and even take them home for a test drive. If you don't like it, just take it back. What's the harm in trying?

-I am only an early adopter/innovator when I see potential in the trend and like it on myself. I don't jump on the latest thing just because it's the latest thing. It has to look good on me and suit my personal style. Then there are certain things that I just absolutely hate, and won't go near in spite any other factors. Same with technology. It wouldn't make sense for me to get something that I have no use for.

OT: People who are slow on the uptake regarding technology definitely risk getting left behind in a detrimental way. Not a good idea. I don't even consider it an option anymore: it's mandatory.

This is so cool, Garmenta. Woo hoo, Gaussian Distribution!

I really like to try new things fashion wise, so I would put myself as either an early adopter, or with the masses, but near the earlier side than the middle. Once a trend reaches saturation, I'm usually kind of tired of it.

Maya's question about things looking dated made me think about this.

There's a curve that describes the way that people adopt innovations--whether they're in technology or in fashion--and it categorizes people according to how fast or slow they are to adopt something new. On one end of the curve are the innovators, who love new things and try them with zest. Close by are the early adopters, who are eager to try new things, even if they aren't the first. Then there's the majority, some of whom adopt earlier and some, later. Then there's a group of laggards who are slow to try anything new (a few of them hate everything new and get stuck in a previous era, whether it's using a rotary phone or wearing 20-year-old pants).

If you want to see a picture of the graph and read an explanation, take a look at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/D.....nnovations. Or you can watch to see how the people around you are deciding whether or not to wear skinny jeans.

As much as I enjoy fashion, I'm a late adopter--I need to see the new trend often enough to be convinced to try it for myself. What about you? Where are you on the innovation curve?
