Thanks Sharan, L'Abeille and Sloper. I can get influence from many places too - sometimes documentaries or tv shows. And sometimes an influencer outfit or advert captures my attention. And sometimes a forum outfit too....

I’m an emotional, not methodical shopper! I’ve been influenced by street-style photos, Instagram, catwalk coverage, TV, retailer websites, and Angie of course.

Sometimes a specific item, sometimes a color, texture, or proportion combination strikes my fancy.

That being said, I haven’t shopped too much this year, but was struck by an oversized lilac mohair sweater and a striped knit maxi skirt on a retailer’s site, and a few graphic tees from designers found on Instagram.

Just watched a documentary on HBO. One of the women on the show wore the most spectacular turquoise and coral long beaded necklace - a new obsession!

An interesting question, Sal. And such intriguing answers, too. I am quite influenced by emails from the retailers I shop. If I see something interesting in the email, I'll click through to the site and see what's new or on sale. That said, I don't often go ahead and buy right then, but it will plant a seed for future purchases or styling ideas. Same thing with Angie's picks and WIW posts here on the forum. I can think of two things I tried on and bought because I was enamored with how a sales associate wore them: 1) a pair of overalls, which I have since passed on; and 2) a sweater vest, which I still have. Also Eileen Fisher harem pants, which I also still have.

I don't follow influencers at all. I'll look at their posts when someone here shares one. I have an Instagram account but hardly look at it; I don't really know how to use it.

My most recent purchases have been in person, while browsing in a fun local boutique (jacket, coat, and pants in Finds), and while looking for specific items to complete outfits (neutral tees and sweaters in Finds).

Back to add: I'm very influenced by the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale discussion here, with Angie's picks and what forum members find. I think what Angie has taught me, though, is not to just get something because I like it or I like it on someone else, but to really consider it in terms of my own style, wardrobe, and life.

I couldn't think of a thing -- I need nothing so most of my purchases are secondhand serendipity.

But-- I lemming'd that Uniqlo pouch purse. I loved it on all the Fabbers I'd seen it with. Then my daughter showed up with one, and I could see how it really is a practical and stylish upgrade to the fanny packs I'd fallen into using. So I bought my own when in Montreal recently. Black ripstop, not to be confused with daughter's black corduroy version.

Just wanted to chime in here and say I'm also a big Dolly Alderton fan! I was a regular listener of her High Low podcast with Pandora Sykes, and I miss it. It's lovely to see her continued success, with her books and the tv show she did.

Yes, I sometimes buy via instagram ads, (most recent COS) or if a Youtuber has tested a bunch of white t shirts or something. There is another blog I check in with from time to time called Le Catch. But I have only purchased one Zara zip up sweatshirt from her recommendation. I am making much fewer purchases than I ever have and I am so picky now. I also have way less money to spend these days. I shop with an open mind too. Here's my most recent acquisition from TJMAAX, an olive cargo pant, and a much needed pant that isn't a jean, that was on the clearance rack for $32.00 https://www.saksfifthavenue.co.....ants-04000

What a great topic! You asked about specific purchases and I rarely buy retail, and don't live in the US, so I can only think of one specific purchase in the last year. An influencer that some follow here (Neelam Ahooja) wore a pair of open weave flats by Massimo Dutti, a store we have locally. They were sold out everywhere by time I saw them, but they did scratch the itch for that sort of shoe and I kept them in mind. A while later, right around my birthday, I stumbled upon them (probably searching for them second hand) on the local MD website, last pair, on sale and in my size! So you know I bought them. Possibly my only retail wardrobe purchase of 2024 (outside of undergarments).
I was influenced to buy Allison Borstein's shoes by her and a forum member, but waited until they appeared on the second hand market. In general I am influenced by social media regarding what I pick up to resell and to put into the stores, because that is how business works .
(In the past, however, I did shop Angie's picks especially during NAS, which often corresponded with our trips to the US.)
Where I am influenced is skincare. But that is a while other story!

Yes, every country needs an Angie!! And exactly -- she tells who the item might work for and why, what's good about it, what might bother some people, etc. Super helpful info, so if I am in the market for a lightweight cotton sweater, for example, or a pair of waterproof boots (or you name it) I go to look at what she has recommended in the past year.

Suz, I would love to be able to utilise Angie’s picks because I think they are genuine recommendations based on what she has seen working with her clients. And they are presented as “you may like this if you like brown (or insert other personal preference here)” kind of way. Horses for courses, as Angie says. I often lament the fact that Angie is not Australian

Thanks all for the comments. Interesting to see where the influence comes from and different strategies - they can all work. Love hearing yours Angie and how you decide what to look for. And it is great to hear how finds help people too - such as Lisa and Suz - and the forum for all of us.

In the past I would have turned to fashion magazines or even the fashion section of the newspaper. I chose a bridesmaid dress from Fashion Quarterly spread and I remember seeing some flared jeans, hunting down the stockists and purchasing them. I have also sometimes seen a shop window display, headed in and purchased it off the mannequin. I am quite decisive with wildcards and don't second guess things too much.

I’m not on Instagram or other things like that, and the only fashion blog I follow is YLF. I have bought YLF Finds from time to time. I’m influenced by people here as well as Angie. That’s why I bought pajama jeans. But then, we were going to Hawaii, and I saw myself in a mirror at SeaTac and thought wow that’s not the look I’m going for, and eventually donated them. I get the NYT and look at the style section. They sometimes recommend things, but it’s super expensive things like a $3000 coat. And I would never spend that kind of money.

I don't do any social media, or read/watch as much fashion content as I used to. Occasionally I've bought YLF Finds, but it's been a while. Mainly it's customer reviews that will make or break an online purchase for me.

That said, I did go and try on the trending Adidas Sambas- cause Low Profile (finally) and Gumsoles (halleluia for their return). They didn't work and I bought other sneakers, but I wouldn't have gone looking for them if I hadn't seen them online.
*Confession, I have made a few " Buzzfeed made me buy it" non- style purchases, with mixed results*

This is so interesting! For me, I tend to define my own wants and needs, but then if an influencer comes along and shares what I'm looking for, all the better. There is a Canadian influencer I find particularly good in terms of budget and the types of things she recommends. I purchased a burgundy sweater from Gap and a brown croc-embossed brown purse from her recommendations and they were both great. BUT again, I was looking for those items ... She didn't influence so much as did the sourcing for me

Brooklyn, I am loving those sandals for you -- I hope they work out!

Interesting discussion! Eva, how lovely that you found that scarf! I adore the colours and pattern. Funny that an H&M item has such longevity in the closet.

Speaking of which, I also relate to what Roberta said about this blog and forum members motivating me to shop my closet and also to experiment with styling ideas I might not have considered. I think there is something about the community aspect of the forum that makes me more interested in participating or trying what someone says -- I'm much less interested in someone who is clearly trying to sell me something, if you know what I mean. For their own profit.

Also, Sal, you were asking about specific items and what influences us to purchase them and I answered that I buy a lot of Angie picks -- which is absolutelyl true, as you can see here! (I don't always buy them the season she picks them, but will remember them when I am in the market for such an item.) But I think the biggest influence of this blog and forum, and a more important one, has been to help me figure out and refine my style direction. The whole style moniker discussion, various people's dips into Kibbe and others, the 3-5 words to define your style conversations, and watching various forum members refine their own style over the years has been super helpful and is the biggest influence on my general attitude and approach. So that, like others, I tend to know what I need or want, more or less, know what works for me -- and so when I consider Angie's picks -- or anybody's -- I'm only swayed towards it if it is a thing I am very likely to wear, appreciate, and value.

Having as has been well documented over the years acquired a rather large wardrobe, I usually use the posts here to figure out new styling for existing pieces. I also get ideas here on what is likely to be readily available in the market to fill in gaps. I don’t usually shop the picks, because I have a pretty short list of the brands I know are most likely to fit, and I tend to shop their prior season merchandise on sale. I did buy Wash Lab denim skirts off the picks here, and some belts, and I link through to NAS to see if I can fill in gaps I can’t fill elsewhere.

A very interesting question, and in my case proof that influence is often so subtle as to be unnoticed. I look at the Finds every morning, and the blog and YLF members often motivate me to shop my closet, but as to what I actually purchase . . . I am influenced in a particular direction, but not for particular items.

This year I was tired of slim and skinny pants, so bought a slew of wide leg versions of what I already owned (corduroy, denim, twill). These were definitely trends that I was seeing everywhere; on YLF and in the wild. I also wanted more black and neutral accessories, so I bought shoes, two bags, and a coat. I wanted more casual cold weather tops, so I hit up LL Bean.

My Insta is mostly animals, comedy, and food. :-)

Sal, thanks for the interesting discussion! That black dress is sensational on you!

Lisa, Suz and Brooklyn, thanks for the kind words. I am touched :)

To answer your question - I am extremely uninfluenced by social media!

I barely follow fashion and style related things on IG. My feed is full of doggies, horses, donkeys, food, chefs, music, and cities! I never watch style videos and chanels on youtube! I watch music videos and food recipes. I watched a few hair videos as my hair was growing out, but got bored with it. I don' do TikTok, Pinterest, or X.

I like to look at what retailers, trends, and the global industry is doing because that's my line of work. I celebrate 33 years in the rag trade next year! I see what tickles my fancy, and fits my needs. That is what influences me.

I relate to what Brooklyn said here:

"I shop with a general idea of what I’m looking for and some degree of openness to ideas from left field. I am rarely looking for a specific item that I’ve seen advertised/promoted"

I am very in tune with my style, needs, and sartorial preferences, so shopping is focussed, AND I stay open to new things.

For example:

I passed on some sad knitwear this season, and needed a few replacements. (Cold weather lasts for a long time in the PNW of the US). I know I wanted something colourful to combat long grey days, and something neutral that was not dark. I like classic knits, and I like the polo collar trend. I also love the '80s, '70s and '60s - my favourite eras! Off I went to my go-to knitwear retailers Boden, J.Crew, COS, Ralph Lauren, Talbots, Bloomies, Nordies, and Marks & Spencer to see if they had anything I liked. They did! And on super sale. So I ordered these items.

Multi stripe = colourful classic

Toffee Polo = trendy, neutral, and '70s

The short navy polo sweater in #3 was bought months ago to work specifically with my new big red skirt. So I also shop for a very specific need.

Hope that makes sense!

Such an interesting a topic Sal, there's no question YLF's blog and forum have influenced what I've purchased this year. My Mango balloon jeans are one such example.

Then when everyone on the forum was posting about Mary Jane's, I found a pair second hand that I though would be comfortable for me to wear too. I also bought an eyelet blouse after seeing I think, Angie's blog and Suz' s post about one of her's. There was also a YouTuber demonstrating how she styles her wide-leg slightly faded denim jeans and I thought I could definitely do that, and bought a similar pair.

Seems as though I'm easily influenced by others with whose style I identify with. It's been interesting analyzing the origins of these purchases and I'm sure I've missed quite a few too because it's been a bit of a change over year for my closet. I feel fairly satisfied with my wardrobe now and have spent more time watching "shop your closet" and "how to style" videos. I also use Pinterest for outfit ideas but I don't use Instagram at all.

Like you, I am not based in the USA, so I don't have easy access to most of Angie's finds.
I have, however, recently purchased a scarf that I had long admired on Suz! I finally found it on a resale platform.

I have an idea of things I need for a particular season, and look for those items at the stores that work for me, COS, Uniqlo, and more recently, Everlane for jeans.

I don’t read other fashion blogs or follow any influencers. I do enjoy Angie’s picks, and have picked up a couple of pairs of much loved boots from her picks over the years.

I rarely use Angie’s picks because they are out of season for me and relate to the US retail market. Free People is the only US retailer I have bought a few items from this year (chiefly: my excellent sling bag), but they don’t seem to be a popular brand here. I sometimes look at Anthro, but I rarely buy from them. I also like to look at Peruvian Connection, but their delivery charges are prohibitive, so I never buy. Most other US retailers I don’t bother to look at.

I really don’t like the whole influencer thing, so I never copy them. I kind of hate it when retailers do editorials like “at home with (influencer) Jane Doe”. It’s such a turn off. (Note: I don’t put Angie in this category because she is not trying to persuade us to copy her. She is trying to inspire us to find our own style, which is much harder.)

I shop with a general idea of what I’m looking for and some degree of openness to ideas from left field. I am rarely looking for a specific item that I’ve seen advertised/promoted.

One recent exception: over the weekend I saw a pair of sandals featured in a fashion editorial in the local paper. The editorial was about brown being THE colour for summer (apparently). I’ve been in search of a toe ring sandal since my last pair wore out. And I liked these because the cross straps at the ankle will fill in the gap between my foot and the hem of my skirt. I ordered them! They haven’t arrived yet so I have no idea if they will actually work out.

I certainly get influenced - mostly by YouTube and street styles here. I get influenced in my choices but not in a type of things I want. I’ll try to explain.
I have a general idea of what I want - a replacement denim shirt, a summer skirt, a crew neck cardigan, so I look for those things.

I saw one influencer wearing a COS wool jacket and thought it might work for me, too. Another was giving a glowing review to Uniqlo’s merino cardigans and sweaters. I checked and sweaters didn’t work for me but cardigans did.

I bought all black Adidas Sambas, the retro Adidas are literally everywhere in our city. Mine is all black and soft, very comfortable as my everyday shoes. I went to COS and Uniqlo to see if their items will work for me but a short wool jacket and a cardigan were on my list before I saw influencers reviews. And I was trying different low profile sneakers because I like them than chunky ones.

My other choices are influenced by brands. I wanted a Bao Bao backpack. I fount it and waited for sale. I bought my other Bao Bao bags when they became available at the reduced price. Another brand I love is Marimekko. I paid full price for my Marimekko quilted jacket once I saw it on a website.

Outside of my list, I might get seduced by a particular item but rarely by the exactly the same item I’ve seen on social media. Most of what I see there is either too expensive for me or will not work for my body type. I look for styling inspiration there.

I buy or try a lot of Angie picks. I'd wager about 3/4 to 4/5 of my wardrobe, in the past few years, especially!

I'm off social media now, and don't follow any other blogs/ youtube, etc, with much regularity, though occasionally I will watch Trinny or follow links posted here to others, just to see what they are saying. I do look at runway shows and street style and trend reports in the magazines, but to my recollection I have never gone out and purchased the exact thing I see in those venues -- I'm looking more at silhouettes, colours, and styling ideas when I look at those. (Well, no kidding -- I cannot afford designer prices!)

Below are items purchased in the last 12 months. All of these were Angie picks or else I saw them on forum members (or both). The Eddie Bauer shorts I saw on Runcarla many times.

To answer your question, I have purchased mostly second hand clothes the last three years. I have only pushed new and seldom when I can’t find an item used or for under ware. Even then, most of my shoes are used. I have trouble finding the small sizes I need in colors now. Last winter I cold not find pants in full length and try ons possible in regular stores. What motives me is free try-0ns and finding what I want.

Watching Taemin performing on You Tube and wearing loose fitting baggy jeans - inspired me to try some jeans that would have similar "cool" look ( less traditional flattery but more unusual wash/color/shape ) - lol. Got 2 pairs from my fav place Urban Outfitters ( low/mid rise for a straight body type and in my budget ).
Loose fitting , oversized toppers that my much younger co-workers were wearing with ease influenced me to try similar ones and go up in size on some of them.
More accessorizing when in the mood - after looking at some the fun outfits from fellow fabbers on our forum.

For me it’s probably where do I look when I either need something or hanker after something. I am much keener on looking at brands that have worked for me in the past.
I usually look online first by putting, for example, olive cardigan NZ into Google. I did that this year when I wanted to get a more cropped olive cardigan. The issue with that now is sadly that Temu comes up first. I ignore the Temu results. But doing that this year, I saw a few but the best looking was at Max. Since Max has come through at least twice in recent years that made me want to try. I have a store at my local small mall so I went there wearing the rest of the outfit I was planning. And success. Worn 15 times already since mid-year.
With the hankering after a bright summer top with pinks in, that was a Google search also, and of several results a local boutique came up with the brand Blackstone that I own a number of pieces of. Again in the local small mall. I tried several sizes and ordered one that was only in their Christchurch branch. Not such a success yet as still sorting the length issue but believe it will be.
I don’t do Facebook or Instagram. Angie’s posts do steer me certain directions like I bought ballet flats last year because of one.
I liked your Athleta pants when you wore them on our walk!
